Whoa, pretty flammable situation with all the politics and employer don't know anything about running a game development and all that, pretty interesting read all together.

:edit: Forgot to mention that I really don't envy the developers working on the project.

Mostly it's hard to do a top X list because like in my case, my list usually is tainted by few factors, like I'm a HUGE Johnny Depp fan, and I admire greatly actors like Christopher Walken, Paul Giamatti, Benicio Del Toro and the list goes on. And the fact that they don't do adventure movies like Indiana Jones movies anymore (aside from Pirates of the Caribbean), these days it's only these action movies with explosions and shoddy scripts, to me a true action movies is Dirty Harry 1, 2 & 3, Sharfts, Bullit, Serpico and others like them.

And I also enjoy greatly weird scriptwork and almost hallucinogenic scenes like what Vanilla Sky had, and Magnolia to some extent. And todays action and blockbuster movies are tainted by the Comicbook movies and LOTR Trilogy, not to leave Matrix unmentioned, we have to go on like a decade before their influense is erased. The movie business moves in seasons, and most of the time it's some type of movie that is the "top dog" and some movies that are underrated and almost have trouble getting the green light from studios.

But that is why we are having this KOH discussion, there has been several identical movies before this and they have all more or less sucked, like Troy, King Arthur, Alexander and now Kingdom of Heaven there might be more but I can't be assed to remember something I'm trying so hard to forget.

My Top 5 changes from season to season, sometimes I feel like something actionpacked and sometimes something more "soft".

But some all time favorites are

    1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro)

    2. Pirates of the Caribbean (Johnny again and Gore Verbinski)

    3. Kurosawa's Seven Samurai

    4. Lord of the Ring Trilogy

    5. Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress

List goes on and usually they jump from position to position, I can't rate movies to list like this, like Kurosawas Seven Samurais is like a bomb, but so are Clint Eastwoods Fistfull of Dollars, For Fistfull More and Good, Bad and Ugly, not to mention Dirty Harry 1, 2 & 3.

But do tell me your top 5 if you can rate movies.

Yeah but think about this, most of your core players are happy, but some say that original UT was better than this one, some new players leave because there isn't much to keep their minds occupied other than the onslaught, and core players will be pissed if you change the game. Which comes to the conclusion that you are damned if you don't, and you are damned if you do. So why not change the game around, see all the happy people coming in, see HC players leave and badmouth, and the old players won't return. What did you actually lose/win?

That is the hard part of series, you can't steer too far too fast, but you can go pretty far with little steps.

You should sometimes go and check some MMOPRG forums where this "problem" is best seen, some say that the game is gods creation and best there is, some say that the game is worst ever and they hate it and the players, why should you try to please both of them. There will always be badmouthing, HC gamers and newbies.

When pushing game to a genre like "fastpaced arcade multiplayer game" it hardly leaves any space to move, and no wonder there isn't any innovation, if they move a step to realistic they lose the arcade and it no longer is the"fastpaced arcade multiplayer game", besides Epic told that they are going to change the "fastpaced" to bit more slow paced and more in your face action than the current snipers nest that it is.

There are plenty of ways to improve this genre, like example vehicles when they were introduced in UT2004, they are in their first release so how can you say that no innovation happens? Or are people thinking that innovation is like Zelda 1 (topscroller), Zelda 2 (sidescroller) and Windwaker (completely 3d)?

It's not that the developer doesn't do anything new, it's the players who don't use it, like Counter-Strike you could still say that it's completely the same game it was years ago, AK47, MP5 and de-dust.

Umm.. how do you think I didn't understand what Village was? I don't like the movie = I don't understand the beauty of it? Jesus you are like one of those "for abstract art" speakers, people who don't like something and suddenly they are idiots.

With as good reasoning as you have, there must be something wrong with YOU if you think Gladdy was anything special, bad acting, seemingly epic proportions, story about strugle, I have seen all that and much more years before Gladiator was even a good idea on a bad writer.

I'd go as far as saying, not only innovation is possible, but I'd say that we have only scrathed the surfase of games in these past 20 years.

People seem to forget all the time how infant game industry still is, it's like people in 1910 said "I think this will be the high of movies and I'm not seeing it to go anywhere from this point", so be reasonable, it's just a innovative depression time right now, till the old school game designers like Peter Molyneux, John Carmack and others who have been in the business from the beginning move away and give room for new designers with fresh ideas.

And besides UT and Half-Life are cornerstones of this time just like Doom was back in the day and what that means is that we have a sturdy foundations and we can build all kinds of wacky strucktures on these fine foundations.

What I think Daan0 was saying is, in the age of digital photography, you tend to take hundreds of pictures and look if there is anything good, compared to analog, where you take a look if there is anything good to take a picture from. I started photography with film and still use b&w film and medium format to take photos.

Just take photos, but don't lose the focus on the way, sometimes when I shoot with digital camera, I'm not taking photos, I'm documenting a happening/something and then the pictures suck.

I think village wasn't a bad movie becaues they didn't speak normal english, it was just bad by definition that it sucked ass and it wasn't even scary, just like Signs.

But back to KOH and Diddlery Scotty, I have never seen a movie with massive fight scenes if we don't count braveheart and LOTRs, I can't imagine what cool is with fast cut scenes and seemingly epic score in the background. How many times can they do that before someone says, maybe we should try something original for a chance, and bad thing about Scotty is that he is not that person.

He directed Alien and Blade Runner and that is it, he has done his good movies and continue making these hollow movies for the rest of his life without anyone saying a bad thing about him in hollywood. One good deed brings you pretty far there. Just look at Ashton Kutcher.

I think Epic is too hard trying to make engine to others than to make engine for them to make the best damn game ever. They got loads of talent, but they are too committed to make a great engine for different game types.

Inspired by the cracked PSP thread, I'm hoping that there are some handheld lovers out there to give a shit about these.

So, first a rumor, Japanese coders made a GBEMU for PSP, interesting, interesting indeed. Nothing firm has not been released, but hell, why not.

Second, something that all you who play übernintendo on your PC with emulator (like I do) will find interesting. Development for Nintendo DS has been kickstarted, some screens of polarium and metroid prime has been uploaded to developers site.

I don't think anyone is really allowed to complain about something being too short after they've paid for it.

I'm imagining that you didn't mean that to be literal what you just said, it's just weird to say something like that. It's like saying "sorry about the buggy game, I know you can't play it through, but you are out of luck we are not going to patch the game, because you just bought it", I know, it sounds really weird.

Comparing movies and videogames are valid to certain point, BUT, people often search completely different things from these two formats. I'm not going to analyze this, because we are talking about two completely separate formats with very little to do with another, or are you saying that books are the best format of entertainment because they are long?

    ReNo

I know the 8-bit and 16-bit games were very short, especially in comparison when the other is a platformer (sonic the hedgehog) and other is a adventure/action game (metalgear solid), and it's not about old school games people are drawing their lust for long games, it's the jump from old school games to current games. They played platformers that ranged from 2 hours of play and then few years later they play a game that takes 10 hours to complete, now again few hours later, we should be playing games that take even longer to complete or have so much content that going through it all is taking atleast 20-30 hours to complete (like GTA:SA and they are becoming longer and longer). Fable takes around 15-20 hours to complete and some people say that is a shot game, it's not short when compared to a game like HL2 that you can easily beat in 5 hours or so, it's comparing Fable to the 100% complete GTA.

So as you can see it's pointless to compare modern games to 8/16-bit era.

Izuno you speak powerful words indeed.

I have had time to think some things out since I have never loved anything as much as I love game industry, don't take me wrong, I'm pretty much self educated when it comes to game development, but schools are having pretty hard time keeping up with the pace

One problem I see with game development is that compared to other industries like movie industry is that if movie industry worked the same way game industry does, many many movies would have not been done, in movie industry there are alot of individuals that are hired for projects because they are suited well to the task like a director who has done several adventure movies or war movies can do hell of a better job than someone who has done comedies, well in some cases atleast. In game development, you have your core team with the key players already hired like game designers and lead artists and lead programmers, only extra hands are brough in to work with projects too big for the inhouse staff to handle.

Second thing, in movie industry there are alot of smaller companies that are specialized to certain thing and do that faster, easier, cheaper and have their own developed tools for the task (answer to question number one I guess) without costing extra to a game developer, I mean what develper would make Unread Edit style tool if they are making one FPS and then going back to RTS games?

Now music business is somewhat similar to game development in terms of team, the same musicans make a record and record company produces and publishes it (in majority of the cases) this works if they made same games with similar content all the time, so no need to hire extra developers rise, but then again, they wouldn't be succesful with that.

Now what this all adds up, is we need more companies specialized to certain areas of game development and those individuals (designers seem to be these individuals these days, look at American McGee) and cinematics are usually made outside. But think of this, we have a designer making a game design, now he could be part of a developer or independent, after he finishes the design (demo part is still bit tricky since these days no publisher is going to lift a finger without a demo) they continue to bring in other companies specialised to certain areas of game development such as graphics, AI, dynamic content, cinematic and what not. Think about how much it would speed up the process and make things cheaper if a developer wouldn't need to hire 20 artists to do those high polygon props and normal maps, instead they hire a outside studio to do that, and they just might have the tools and expertice to do it even better than you could do it.

What I'm saying here is that game development as it is has prettymuch come to an end, we are still using some stone age development cycles and patterns that are not cost effective, these "methods" to do games are invented back when first games were made. The industry needs to move on, but instead we are just running in circles and wondering why we see our own tracks.
