Well what can I say, I love the FREEDOM of speech that we have in the rest of the world. Maybe Bush should attack USA to bring back "freedom and democracy" like he does around the world Am I right or what?

Maybe you should take these discussions out in politics forum or PM and control yourself a bit more.

Sorry kleiney n' RD, you know me, I'm just mouthing off.

Well, like reno, I'd see lots of new maps, having played the old set of maps for like two years, I kinda know where the enemy is, and I just run through the maps and shoot/nade the usual camper locations, and get few kills, so it's like a factory work more than fun play.

And DoD maps are bit too linear for todays standards of a war game, it should do for the new style of big open maps where there are lots of different ways to get different places, I guess that is the major grief on my part, well actually that is the major grief on ALL HL mods, every single one of them are piperuns.

But, ahem.. skdr, you beautiful man, you make DoD maps don't you Maybe you could make a old vet happy and make some more open maps than the current ones

There's some HUGE stuff going on behind the scenes. DoD will change, bigtime... The release is actually closer than you guys think

As huge as the transition from beta 1.3 to beta 2?

In csnation, they say that DoD:S will be released sometime around september..

Quote from Dod forums, to clarify some retail dod:s questions.

    Quote

Retail version (store bought) version of HL2 does NOT include DoD:SIf you bought a copy of HL2 in a store, you do not automatically get DoD:S once it is released. This goes for all versions, including the collectors edition.

DoD:S is only available for free on release to those who bought the Silver or Gold packages via Steam.

What! This is an outrage! I paid $XXX for HL2! I demand DoD:S!

The store versions of HL2 were duplicated, packaged and distributed by Vivendi who had the publication rights for HL2 and CS:S only. These rights did non include DoD:S which is why it is not availble with the retail version.

How do I get DoD:S when its released then with a retail/store version?

Retail users will be able to add DoD:S to their Steam package for a nominal price when it is released. As of yet we have no word on what that price will be. However, it won't be the same price as a full Steam Silver subscription and probably a lot less than buying it as a retail game.

But DoD:S is a mod! It should be free!

DoD:S is not a mod, in fact DoD hasn't been a mod since beta 3.1. The mod was bought by Valve and as of 1.0 (when it was available in stores), it became a commerical, stand-alone product. It is now a game in its own right and not an add-on.

    Display More

DoD:S will cost something, but it can be bought separately.

Team Fortress Source will be more important to me.

You mean the mod or the actual TF2 that Valve makes? Since I don't think they are going to make a source port from TFC because they are doing the TF2.

I have been patient, impatient and everything in between, waiting for DoD:S to be released, I was a long time member of several clans back in the day, most fondly remembering back the days of beta 1.3 before they changed the whole concept, but after that I still was in several clans, even had one of my own

DoD:S might just be as important release as NS:S will be to me, but how important is it to you? Discuss!

  • Why do texture artists always get shafted?

    • August 25, 2005 at 9:03 AM

Well, I don't know about GTA world textures, as a modeler I usually pay attenttion to the models. But I have to say that some of their character textures really suck ass, and animation in all the 3d GTAs is worst I have seen in so commercially succesful game ever, some mod team quality shit there.

    • Kosmo

One way of seeing things is that texture artist is prettymuch the only one that really makes the feel of the game, and his work is needed by modellers and mapmakers, it's very rare that one person can do that much of an impact on a game, the same texture artist can make a texture for a character, a gun and a map, so how many things animator can work? Or mapper? Small portions compared to a texturer.

At it's time, Mafias graphics were hailed as one of the greatest ever. But if you look at it now, it seems like garbage.

Well, it seems that most of those games, if not all, have released SDK which basically means that everyone can get their hands to the textures anyway, and besides, there are not any originals, so I don't see the big problem, other than the abandonware debate about copyrights and all.

Well there ARE certainly both friction (to an extent) and buoyancy in source - don't you recall putting bouyant barrels under that ramp in HL2's water hazard level, or building a little bridge at a certain point in nova prospekt? It might not be perfect, but its not bullshit either.

Maybe not complete and utter bullshit, but everything in HL2 is either way too light, or way too heavy. Example, you can lauch a humanoid character up several ten feet in the air with a grenade, but that very same grenade, barely moves a car. It still seems way too scripted, like barrels have insane amounts of buoyancy because they are ment to be used for certain missions and everything else is just trivial if it acts like it's real life counterpart. But then again, if everything was made 100% realistic, it would wreck the gameplay, and no one wants that.

    Quote from ReNo

I agree that it does look overly fake in games when anything that is killed instantly becomes a lifeless ragdoll, but the scenario you described is just about an impossible pipe dream for the time being, at least for it to be done in an any way realistic and animated way.

Well, if you can make games where the player character grabs hold to a ledge, why can't NPC? Besides, it doesn't have to be realistic, I mean, how realistic it is to slip on to a small piece of ice and fall to your demise?

I think the clip of shooting the fireball at the wooden planks to make the statue fall makes the game look cheap and lame. Anyone?

Well, it's one of the physics fads, others being the ragdoll and breaking objects. Like the BS they talk about friction and buoyancy, I tried to do a raft in garrys mod to put the nodbuggy on and use it as stationary machinegun post at sea. Bullshit, that thing flew apart, literally, the planks just shot to different directions.

    Quote from JynxDaddy

The ice is rad, could do with a slipping animation though.

Now what would have been cool, instead of instantly dying and becoming lifeless sack of meat (I suppose big bad dudes weaknes is small patch of ice on the floor, poor guy, he wouldn't survive in Finland), it would have been cool if he grabbed on to the ledge, and you could have gone and stop on the poor bastards fingers. *evil laughter*
