I like what you are saying. We would need more people who think like that to turn the game industry in to more healthier direction.
I can say that I'll be watching your progress through your tests closely, since I'm interested to see if there is actually a market for this sort of approach. Others like that I can say is Charlie Cleveland with his Unknownworlds, he is using the NS team to bring in the fans and build a community, then build a commercial game. Very wise guy, and his blog is worth a read.
I have had a talk with some of my friends that want in to game industry that we should start a small team, maybe make a mod or go straight to contract work to fund our studio, and in the side, work on our own game. It's basically a cat and mouse game to minimize the costs and risks.

Thanks for the fast replies, really shows that you are serious about the community relations.
But I still believe that you are risking awful lot with the mods, if you release nothing else than the best ww2 mod for HL2 or BF2 you'll risk just hurting yourself, but I hear your confidence.
Your strategy is rather interesting, near to something I have tought about myself couple of times. And it can give developer a good name when you have good community relations and give something to the community rather than make them pay for every little thing you do, something that made Valve very popular.
And something I have noticed in mod-community relations compared to dev-community relations is that mod team can get huge amounts of hatred towards them if they change one little aspect of their game, the community feels like they are the extra team member, being through the development from the beginning, they feel that you owe them something. As opposite to dev-community relations that are certainly different form of communication.
So don't let them treat you are an average mod team and I think everything will go allright.

I agree with insta, you could be very well shooting yourself in the leg with the mod projects.
Even if we are used to get some amazing quality mods, game developers are game developers, making a mod, especially making a WW2 mod isn't going to give you necessarily a good name or that much visibility.
Even if you are a real indie studio, to many, you are just a mod developer with a large plans, and usually those fail to bring it. But if you were advertising yourself in forums and everywhere as an indie dev with the plans to make a huge game, you'd gather alot of audience.
And second, if people will have a free version of your game to play on their favourite engine, why they would buy your game? Many still play the UT2k3/4 demos.
I'm just pointing out.

Kosmo, pls get your beavis butface out of here. Go depress someone else...
Fine if it makes you sad and cry. But it's the truth, there is just way too little changing in the modding industry, and guys like these are not helping any bit.
They didn't need to flex their creative muscle that much to show something actually impressive in some other genre that was not made about one hundred times. And it's not just that there are so many WW2 mods, it's more about the fact that all the games are just the same, they do nothing new and they have nothing to differentiate themselfs from others.

50 cent is the best selling artist at the moment, so there is a market for this kind of game, just like there is a market for fittie's movie.
-
Page after page after page of unskinned weapon models. I have a rule of thumb, if the mod has unskinned guns in it's page, I just can't give a flying fuck about the mod anymore.
And if that is not bad enough, YAY! It's another WW2 game, I hope it doesn't have anything I haven't already done in the other 200 WW2 mods n games.
Team tried to be professional, but they fail miserably.
I hope the best for the team, but you just lost a gamer.

wow kosmo, your opinion sucks ;o
Can you be more specific about WHAT about it sucked and WHY do you think it like that, you know, try to articulate and not just post empty opinions and remarks. If you are unable to do so, you shouldn't post at all.

Stolve is right, organizations like Red Cross have learned their lesson from the scandal back in the 80s where charitable organizations gave their money to the goverment of some african country and the dictator that was the head of the goverment used it for his own purposes and funded the military with it.
So I don't think that there is no way your money can be used to buy a recoilless rifle or ak-47 today if you make your donation through a known organization.
-
I'm not changing my donation target just because some might right now need it. They might have a bad situation right now, but some countries actually have bad situation always.
It's like if a volcano erupted in like sweden, people who haven't given a flying fuck about anything before, donate to them just because they had a hard time right at that moment, and it pisses me off. You actually have to constantly remind people that there are some unfortunate people out there, and some natural disaster is just that kind of reminder, but when you don't hear from some place in a while, people just stop caring/transfer their donations elsewhere.
If you really care about Pakistanis, it's great, people are people and this kind of stuff shouldn't happen to anyone. But think about it when you stop your "generous charity" that there actually still are people who might not have had a disaster, but still need your help but you don't do nothing about it because the last earthquake didn't hit their location.
-
I just can't put in my small little brainey wainey how people love RE series so much, I have tried the earlier three but just didn't like them enough to really get in to them. Maybe I should try out RE4 for kicks.
-
I have no grudge against Pakistanis, but just because this is a new zone where people live in discomfort I just can't give a shit right now, there are people living in that kind of conditions all the time, Pakistan got hit with a earthquake and now their economical infrastructure has gone to shit, well guess what, tuff luck, there are areas in africa that would have appreciated your help BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE ANYTHING!
So Pakistanis can go to hell and die for now, maybe there is some time later to help those who like to live in a third world style in most parts of the country, and still have expensive nuclear weapons program. Yes, I would totally like to help them very much.
(disclaimer. this is an opinion and opinion only, it's not a fact, opinions may be discussed and debated but they may not be changed)

It took 5 different sessions? how long were the sessions? there are alot of factors....mine was gross all night after i got it, it look 4 hours, but ya...its not swollen or anything
I don't know, he just said that it took 5 sessions, he showed me the arm and I was like "aww, that is so sad" but it turned out nicely a great big dragon and my bitey face got there snug too between the scales, he gave homage to all his good friends.
I have been graving for a tattoo of my own ever since, and to return a favor to put a small scaly in mine.
