Started with Beta 6 at a lan party. First map was dust. Played it religiously until version 1. Gotta thank CS for getting me into the modding scene.

And that's awesome news about Doom; a few friends and I were wondering about how hard it would be to make a 3D engine (purely out of curiosity), and an older/simpler engine would be a great thing to reverse-engineer.

    The beauty of GPL

I've looked at the Doom code. For me, it was pretty hard to follow. I'd recommend starting with wolf 3d and moving on up. 'tis what I did and I'm up to Quake I. It's interesting to see the evolution of gaming history as you work your way up.

    Also, nice looking pics!

Quakecon 2006 has been announced. For those that dont know, QC is a 1800 person 3-day lan party in Texas. Its sponsored by nVidia, Alienware, Dell, Newegg, id Software, and a whole bunch of other major computer players.

You basicly play anything you want for 3 days straight. Theres prize giveaways, sneek peeks, and demos, things like that. Its a hell of a time. From the official site:

We know you all have been waiting to find out about QuakeCon 2006, and we want to thank you for your patience. We’ve had some unexpected issues locking in the dates and location, but don’t worry, we’re still bringing you another kick-ass QuakeCon event, and it’s already right around the corner - August 3 – 6 in Dallas, TX at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in their Trinity Exhibition Center. With about 1,800 BYOC spots, QuakeCon 2006 will be a bit more exclusive than it has been the last couple of years, but we hope people will enjoy the more personal touch this year. QuakeCon 2006 will of course include all the great activities that it’s known for, including high-stakes tournaments, workshops, exhibitors, the BYOC Area, parties, and the public’s first chance to play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

First-come, first-served online registration for the BYOC area will kick off at 9 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 28th, 2006, at http://www.quakecon.org.

To reserve a room for QuakeCon 2006, call the Hilton Anatole Hotel at 214-761-7500, or Hilton’s toll-free reservation number, 1-800-HILTONS. To receive our specially negotiated room rate of $125 (single, double, triple, or quad occupancy), and our special daily self-park rate of $5 (regularly $15 per day), you must request the group rate for “QuakeCon 2006” when making your reservations. The Hotel requires a $50 non-refundable deposit on group reservations, which will be credited to your final room bill upon check-out. Rooms at this rate are limited, so don’t wait! Additional information regarding the Hilton Anatole Hotel is available at http://www.hilton.com.

*** The QuakeCon room rate is available starting Monday June 26th at 12 noon CDT ***

It is important to note again that the only way to receive the special room rate of $125 and the $5 daily self-parking, is to call Hilton reservations at the numbers listed above and book your reservation under QuakeCon 2006.

We’ll have details about the event schedule and tournaments very soon. Thanks for being patient, and get ready for another great QuakeCon.

I'll be there, but then again, I'm not important enough for anyone to care about me.

Point is, I went last year, its a blast. Commuted down from Wisconsin and it was the best three days ever. I walked away with so much free stuff. My friend walked away with two 7800's for free (nVidia likes to randomly hand out things).

I realize this post is kinda geeky, but whatever. Its fun. Anyone that can make it, come. Its the best time ever.

I disagree. It may seem tacky, but allow me to quote Andrew Shepard from The American President:

    Quote

You want to proclaim this as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol must depict one if its citizens expressing their right to burn that flag in protest.

I can't put it any better than that. I say keep it legal. To me, this just seems like another step of government trying to remove civil liberties. I've never burned a flag before, but if the Bush administration keeps it up, I just might. Maybe I'm just too liberal...

Doesnt matter. Quake II went open source, so this can be released as a stand alone game.

Found this via digg. Its a list of everything that has happened since Duke Nukem Forever was announced:

    My favorites are:

Things that have taken less time than Duke Nukem Forever's Development:Science & Technology

    * The Wright brothers designed and flew the first airplane.

    * The theory of General Relativity.

    * The United States' entire program to put a man on the moon, from Kennedy's challenge to the landing.

    Wars

    * The American War for Independence

    * The United States Civil War

    * World War I

    * World War II and the entire Manhattan Project.

    * The United State's involvement in the Vietnam War.

We can land a man on the moon and end a world war quicker than 3D Realms can develop DNF

Note: I got no ill-will towards 3d Realms, I just think its funny. I actually wouldnt mind working at 3dr someday.

  • Developers ditching PS3 in favor of Wii?

One of our affiliates, Nintendo Wii Zone is reporting on a couple of rumors originating in the latest issue of EGM. The rumors have a high chance of being true. However, they are still just rumors.First, it seems that third-party developers have had enough of Sony and its over-priced junk. Rumor has it that developers are quickly jumping off the PS3 ship and unto the Wii ship. High production costs and difficult development cycles are cited as the primary reasons. True or not, I do expect this to happen in the long run. The PS3 simply is not a viable platform to do business on.

Second, LucasArts apparently heard the demands of the many Wii fans. LucasArts is now deep underway in delivering an exclusive Star Wars game for the Wii. The game will apparently take advantage of the Wii controller’s motion sensors, the rumble feature and the excellent “Depth of Sound” feature. The controller will essentially act as a Lightsaber!

If its true, cant say I'm suprised. discuss.

Try starting something else for awhile and then after a few weeks come back to this one. Chances are that while you're making the other map you'll think of an idea that doesnt work for that map but would work for this map.

Just make sure you actually come back to this map, otherwise you'll end up having 30 unfinished maps with no releases (me has this problem).

    Looks nice.
