This game is slowly moving from 9/10 category to the "fuck this game" category.

In the Chernobyl mission I had a checkpoint save occur right when a grenade was 1ft in front of me, with about one second left of it's fuse to go. Top that off with when the rare chance I escaped immediate death, the combat was incredibly difficult, mostly because of grenades spawning in everywhere, and the fact that no where is safe anymore thanks to bullet surface penetration.

Consistency and player expectancy is thrown out the window. Some missions allow you to climb onto/over cars, where other times the exact same cars are used as roadblocks where you can't get on top. Often these expectancies result in frustration where a particular object would be introduced one way in mission x, and when I see the same object again in another mission, suddenly it's now being used for something completely different. Now I end up dead, and very annoyed.

The dog fending seems inconsistent also. I would repeatedly get killed by them, so I tried to just spam RS to get them off, but it seems when mashing the button, the prompt never appears, even though it's always going to be RS. When the prompt does properly appear, the window to press RS is so short (shorter than the RE4 cutscene interactions it seems) that also ends up in death.

Having just repelled into the silo, I can say this game suffers greatly from gameplay identity crisis. While it does have great variety (at times), there's never a clear distinction of how the core game should play. The game gets away with the certain scenarios where it will say something like "oh, for this mission you are a dog, and you have to chase cats" and I don't really give a shit, because it's a one-off deal, and usually they are pretty fun. As for the majority of the game where you are on foot and it's the standard on a rails CoD that we all know, there's no combat gameplay mechanic at work. You can't camp out in a room and snipe everyone because grenades will spawn all over and destroy you or guys will spawn and rush in from who knows where. You can't rush ahead and try to skip the combat just because there's always five hundred enemies firing at you. When playing tactically and playing arcade style both fail, I found myself often left in situations where I just felt like my only choice was to exploit the game by bolting through rare open combat lanes to get through a mission. Where most games have clearly defined gameplay styles that are introduced at the start and continue along that thread- while slowly ramping up, I seem to be going willy-nilly through CoD4, just doing whatever works for the particular scene.

Maybe I just played too much at one sitting, although it was probably only ~2 hours.

Things that interest me in PS3:

+++Backwards compatible list is huge, I've never owned a PS2 so I have lots of catching up.

+Blu-Ray player to watch some 1080p on my new TV.

    +DVD player upscales DVD's, I don't have a DVD player (currently using my 360)

+Free internet play and open network

Things that don't interest me in PS3:

---Backwards compatability is limited/going away (if I can't find an older model that still has BC I may not get a PS3)

-I don't really want to support HDDVD or BluRay in this format war

-No games currently out that make me say "I want a PS3 for Game X"

-Not worth $600 now, and won't seem to be worth it for a long time.

Is he playing on XP hacked to DX10 or on Vista DX10? If it's XP... god damn I need to roll back to XP.

If they had said "Gordon Freeman" about 20 more times in that 60 seconds, it would have been spot on. Otherwise, 9/10.

Got to maybe the third/fourth mission in SP, and about an hour of MP. The SP is ultra on a rails (what'd you expect?) but everything looks great. MP is pretty fun too.

I don't think anyone suspected them to be using UE3...

The engine is looking pretty nice though in the last video, didn't know they had real time lighting in the sense that the sunlight could be changed in real time. Still hard to tell how many actual polys are being pumped versus trickery (noticing lots of masked textures for the broken brick walls).

There's all the talk of graphical enhancements in the interview, but I'd be more curious if the AI was made something other than a dumb-as-nails script fest.

I beat the demo! Overall it was a pretty awesome experience. The first time I threw a grenade at a guy in a house only to take him out AND have the house explode into pieces was pretty damn satisfying. The vehicles are pretty fun too but seem a little delayed on their response, might be the result of low framerate though. Got to drop the settings back down to high to get better framerate and play through it a few more times. My head asploded going up the creek at the end with all the small rocks on the ground.

Frie; I understand the cinematic design reasonings behind the choices made in HL2 and for Crysis, I'm just saying I'm not a fan of how they are used in Crysis.

The point in the demo at which I rushed from objective to objective without killing anyone and without dying was the point I quit and uninstalled the game. GG. :lock:

The first one bothered me in that Portal had clearly established where you can place portals, and where you can't, by very obvious texture differences. In this map, the textures are very similar, and it just slows down the process.

I think the "publish level" button just adds it to the level select menu for ease of locating.

Jesus, that tornado video was incredible. Damn you Frie and your amazing technology and mountains of content Congrats on going gold too!

Now if my iPod didn't die with the Crysis demo installer on it, I would be playing... c'mon torrent!

Edit1: It's been two something hours and I've cleared enough space to install the demo and updated my graphics drivers. I hate PC gaming.

Edit2: Finally got to play, though I only made it to the other side of the sunny beach. Amazing visuals as expected, I'm running all settings on very high @ 1280x720. No idea what my framerate is but it seems 20-30ish. I figure I'd be more paranoid about what my framerate is at any given second than I would care about the game if I had it showing. I'm still fumbling a bit with the controls, hitting C when I'm wanting to crouch, even though CTRL is always my crouch... and hitting RMB to change weapon mode- that one I think I will have to change. Character faces are easily the best out there right now. Weapon models are nice and the depth of field when switching modes is pretty great. I'm also still adjusting to learning how to use the suit effectively in combat.

The only complaint I have so far is the use of "first person cam" to drive all the cutscenes. So far in the demo it has been used pretty poorly, and really doesn't feel right. The FOV is pretty wide for most of the scenes, and seems to go even wider in the hanging scene (ick). Also directing the player's attention in FPS stuff is also difficult, doesn't seem to be much improved here (what was the thing that tore up my 'chute? are you supposed to see something?). For HL2:E2 to knock first person cutscenes out of the park, the way they are handled here seems like going back to grade school. Having this great tech and these great tools, it's a shame there aren't awesome third person cutscenes.

I only played about five minutes (and 25 minutes of logos and cutscenes), but in that time I picked up a turtle and threw it at a boat. I'm sold.

While it reminds me of the Might & Magic game on source (not so good), this particular map looks very well put together and themed. Great work on the material and prop choices

Still trucking through EP2, it's turning out to be a lot better than I was expecting. Some of the visuals are really well put together (although not that top tier quality). Many of the puzzles and gameplay are also rock solid. Alyx's deeper voice seemed to be there in the beginning and then went away, whew.

You might be coming at it from the wrong approach. You may know what shapes or foundations you want, but tying it all together with aesthetics is keeping you away. Gray (or orange) box it (the design method, not the game package )!

If you've gone through all the effort of making so many screenshots and videos to show off this work, making real camera movements through matinee would have really made this more presentable.

And 400something MB for a short movie seems really nuts. Are they compressed? Movie trailers (~2 minutes) running 720P are about 90-140MB.
