Good job, quite impressive actually

I would do a small document, maybe a few pages long explaining the iterations and observations that led to to the finished level, I have no doubt looking at this portfolio you have a good eye for the technical and artistic aspects of level creation, but as with most portfolios I get little understanding of your thought processes into the actual design philosophy you like to work by. Breakdown what went well, and what didn't, how did you resolve issues with others on your projects, did you involve others as much as you'd of liked etc?
We're developers, we like to see development processes and WIP content, screenshots of finished levels might get us initially interested but it won't hold people for long. The key is to make your process fast and easy to digest for any reader or potential employer. Showing conception, whitebox, iteration examples, art and finished would be a good way to do so.
You're on the right path for sure!

gets home from work, shattered, have to run 35 miles to shoot some noobs in tf2

The future IMO is being able to control everything with mental stimulus, not attaching mechanical apparatus of our own limbs and eyes. Still it's a step in the right direction I suppose.

hehe, I have the 2.8 70-200, but don't use it much these days, I prefer shooting wide (thats what he said, or did he?)

your work should stand for itself, if it doesnt no amount of distractions will change this.
What could anyone possibly say in a cover letter that will set them apart?
"Hi, I am bob, I love making games and people who make them, I need a job to pay my rent. I found out that you guys need somebody to do what I can do, so please hire me because I love all the games you guys make."
However, somebody out there will think this is original and will possibly give you an interview because of it, but, do these people really know what to look for in hiring or are they just frustrated at the lack of creativity in their job?

Yup, nothing new, all media have respective rating systems that gets in the way of development in one way or another.
Publishers and developers have obsessed since the begging of time about what makes other games successful, vast amounts of time, energy and money are spent on looking into the competition and trying to simply replicate the formula. This sounds great until you realize in a 3 year development cycle times have moved on and you're now "old hat"
The games that are rated highest simply execute the concept the best or are relatively fresh compared to recent trends. Metacritic is simply a score system not a way to guarantee high sales and strong reception from the press.
