This is what got me started with level design.

Quote from Furyo
While on the subject of UnreadEd, I was thinking of starting with 2, thinking it would prepare me for 3. How right is my assumption?
There are similarities here and there, mostly with interface layout type stuff and actors. A lot of the same concepts translate over pretty well. A lot of stuff that was tedious in UE2 is easier to use in UE3. But overall, if you want to start now, UE2 will help you learn the general UnrealEd ways and it will be really easy to switch to UE3 when it's publicly available.

Maybe I should clarify a little. From my level design experience, the tool's have gotten better and easier to use. I can crank out way more complex and polished stuff in the same amount of time as "last-gen".
Yes, it has gotten harder for the artists, with all the new texture maps and such, but for the level designer, the cinematic sequence that once took a week to put together now takes a day. The AI pathing that once required me to place a bajillion little nav points and waste a week, now requires me to simple press the compile button with nothing ever have been placed.
For the artist, the workflow speed is longer overall no matter what, but when you're comparing different tools sets that speed may vary. UE3 is faster for the artist than Source or D3.
Source was designed to create HL2.
Doom engine was designed to create Doom3.
UE3 was designed to create any game you want.

With the tools getting better and better, next-gen isn't really that big of a problem to develop for.
-
Yes. This screen was captured during real AI gameplay animations in a map with playable performance.

I opted out because it costs money. Also, I'll see what's there faster on the internet than I would actually going and standing in lines all day.

Sweet! COngrats!

That texture is in Unreal1, UT, UT200x. Might be in Unreal2, but I'm not too sure.

Welcome to Steam, the place where they can charge for just about anything now.
-
I plan on trying to hold on as long as I can.

Yeah its a Dire Straights album and ACDC song. It's also a western. http://%7boption%7d

Yeah, it's really easy actually. It's basically placing prefabs. The custom script was the hard part.

All In One Basement v5
TomWithTheWeather & Valdacil
Description:
This oblivion mod adds a basement to each house you can purchase. What makes this building mod unique is the fact that it's the same basement no matter which house you buy. Buy one house or buy all of them; the basement stays the same. This gives the player one consistant area to store all his loot.
The player can't use this mod to gain access to houses he doesn't already own. Protection against this has been built into the mod.
Now included, for those who want it, is a Display Room. This room has shelves, display cases, and tables so you can show off your hard-earned loot.
An Alchemy area is also now included, which features Dark Jester's Ingredient Jars and automatic ingredient sorting. To initiate the sorting/collecting function, click on the hourglass located within the Alchemy Chamber.
Fast travel is now available as an option throughout the basement. If you wish to enable fast travel, pull the lever near the entrance. You will get a message that Fast Travel is enabled and every door within the basement (including the trap doors located in the houses) will offer the option to teleport to each level or exit to one of the houses. If you decide you no longer wish to fast travel, simply pull on the lever again to disable it.

Ingredient Jars - By Dark Jester
ChangeLog:
v5
- Huge updates!
- Added Dark Jester's cool Ingredient Jars mod.
- Added Basement instructions for the player.
- Automated alchemy sort and collect functions.
- Combined all Basement trapdoors into one door.
- Fast Travel option throughout entire basement.
- New Alchemy room!
- New Display room!
v4
- Fixed a bug in the Anvil house script.
- Cleaned up some bad references in the .esp file.
- Expanded the bed room area a little bit with some balconies.
- Added a desk, cupboard, and some open barrels.
v3
- Split the basement into mulitple Cells to increase performance.
- Removed display shelves; I didn't realize you couldn't store items in them when I put them in.
- Fixed a small z-fighting error.
- Removed a few candles to help increase performance.
v2
- Whoops! Added support for the Anvil house. You can only use the basement from this house after you've completed the Anvil Manor Quest.
- Altered the layout of the big room a little bit; this should be the only room you have to move stuff out of before you upgrade to v2. I'd removed everything anyway, just to be safe.
- Increased the ambient lighting a little bit.
- Added more storage.
v1
- Initial release
-
I predict rubble pile will be the new crate or barrel. Decoratively, foliage will be the new pipe.

Because the terrorists haven't won until they blowup a small town nobody has heard of...
/me worries constantly about terrorists, video games, going to hell, bird flu, did I turn the stove off, anthrax-laced envelopes, what the latest trend on MTV is, job stealing Mexicans, whether or not I truly support the troops, email viruses, satanic guitars and the satanic music they create, all five locks on my door being locked, black people in general, weight loss, taxes, airplanes I can't instantly identify, my self-image, those crazy liberals, people without patriotic bummer stickers, etc...
