I like this.
One question though; Does changing forum software and server mean that everything on here (users, threads... our history) will be gone in the transfer?

They just have GREAT support, something AIT has been neglecting for the past decade.

i dont mind games being short these days as long as they are awesome.trying to calculate an appropriate dollar/per hours of entertainment ratio can never work once you go down that rabbit hole with a game it tells me that you dindt rellay enjoy it to begin with. i base this on the fact that if i think back on some truely great games:
half life god of war psychonaust ico+sotc resident evil 4 uncharted portal
i wouldnt have felt ripped of even if each one of them cost me over 1000 bucks.
now what reall scares me about dear esther is that everyone says there is no interactivity in it ... i like interacting with things i am actually fearing that i would enjoy it more if i watched an hd play through on youtube but robert wouldnt get anything out of that from me ... which makes me moraly torn.
Watch a hd play through on youtube and if you feel like it was worth your time then buy it on steam, but don't play it...

Did you ever play PlanetSide? That was an MMOFPS and the lag was actually not an issue at all most of the time. They're working on a sequel right now too which should be even more testing considering the added strain of more complicated technology. No idea how they did it but the latency was no worse than you might find in, say, a game of Battlefield. As such I'm definitely of the opinion that real-time action in an MMO is perfectly possible if the developers actually bother to prioritise it, which the Guild Wars 2 guys seem to be doing.I agree though, having never enjoyed an MMORPG before my breath is most definitely held. But considering how much I've enjoyed some single-player RPGs (mostly Fable and Zelda) I'd love to see a truly epic online on I can actually enjoy.
Yup I played planetside, and coming from quake (at that time) I felt it was really laggy, but also very fun =) The lag-feeling might have been because i always played quake on lan and you cant really compete with that ping.

After playing numerous mmo's because of cool bullet points where I've dreamed up how the feature is gonna be so awesome only to be smacked in the face with how they really did the feature, then im not gonna get psyched at all before i see this in action myself.
Consider a tad lag (which all mmos got), then all of a sudden arrows that catches fire mid air doesnt really compute anymore.

Nice video, looks different enough from other MP games out now! The only thing that I'm noticing is the dynamic infestation which is not looking as impressive as the demo when it was still on source?Or is it just like that in the video?
that demo they had was in a simple opengl-thing i think, and not source.

I have been commanded by Frie to start using twitter, and so I have. So if any of you fools likes to hear me whine about unity or post random development updates on ponh then you can follow me at /skjalgsm

You completely missed his point there. They wouldn't have solved any of your problems, it would be EXACTLY the same game but with different art. Nothing would be solved.
No I don't think I did. I'm not a native english speaker so it might not read correctly, but what I was trying to say was that I would love to see how they solved some of the problems I have had, that I have already solved (being as in this hypothetical scenario PONH would be completed). PONH is a very complex game (not as complex as many games, but more complex than ios games in general) and no matter how hard they tried to clone our game they would not succeed 100% with every detail and some of their solutions would be different from my solutions. Like camera movement or shader usage, or the movement system for the character. I would most likely run around on all the terrain and see how their character behaves compared to mine, and seeing as this is a 3d thing with physics I'm bound to find stuff that is different.
You know, I'd look at all the small crazy shit that only game developers really care about. I'd investigate heavily to see if they came up with something better than I did. Mostly to learn, and for the occasional laugh (hopefully).
But seeing as those ios games are significantly easier to make, and simpler in terms of graphics (2d vs 3d) then I can totally understand that the differences between the games are smaller. But that doesn't mean that they aren't different and that there is nothing to learn. On ios things move a lot faster and the margins between a success and a failure is getting smaller every day, so there the really small shit matters more and more. Which is also why the +1 that zynga added should be learned from and taken into account when trying to create the next game, even if that +1 is really really small. (I mean, at this point it could be just the placement of a row of buttons in a menu, or the hover effect when you click on something, or the sound that something plays etc). Personally, I think that the +1 in this case is the art direction and general cuteness that zynga added. Pixel-art in this day and age, to me, is very hipster. But of course thats just personal opinion.
-
I think this guy is totally right; that zynga does rip games off, but they add the +1.
The reason why this +1 is not as big as the +1 Blizzard gave to the rts genre with warcraft over dune is because its a ios or facebook title which is a very minimalistic game.External Content www.youtube.comContent embedded from external sources will not be displayed without your consent.Through the activation of external content, you agree that personal data may be transferred to third party platforms. in general; old black and white movies that have high imdb ratings.

The bucket loads of money could prolly take us to the moon.
Its not a duplicate and I doubt the major facebook/ios population sees it as that. Gameplay might be exactly the same, or even the frames/scenes, but as long as the art has a totally different (better) style, then sure..
Also, warcraft is a total dune clone only with different graphics and story.
How would you feel if someone literally reproduced Pirates of New Horizons scene-for-scene, with everything in the same place and the gameplay exactly the same? Same plot, same script, same characters, same everything? Except switched to a viking theme and done in CryEngine 3 instead.
I realise the above is unfeasible and wouldn't happen, but that's exactly what Zynga has been doing on a smaller scale. If that wouldn't disgruntle you a bit, well more power to you I guess.

tbh, i would applaud their efforts and probably play that game just to figure out how they solved some of the problems I had
Creating a game is really time consuming, even for Zynga. So for them to clone a game is still a pretty impressive feat. Especially when they do it with such quality in mind. -

I cant help you out, because of time issues, but I can give you a tip. You should try to prototype your game in Unity. Use example scripts and what not to get something that moves around in a world so that you have screen shots and stuff to lure programmers in with. Its also good that unity only requires some basic knowledge of javascript or c#, and not total mastery of c++ (because c++ is way harder)
Just look at what peris managed to pull off in unity with no real (not that I know of) programmer experience. Or what Warby managed to hack together before I joined the ponh project.
If you cant do this on your own I'm pretty sure you'll spend most of your time looking for programmers instead of creating the game. Programmers are usually very hard to come by, because most of them prefer to create their own ideas instead of yours.

Best of luck.

Been having a massive craving for a good old simulation game after that whole Tiny Tower thing, but no new RollerCoaster Tycoon, SimCity, etc in sight.
Might have to install The Sims 3 seeing as I didn't play it very much and it still looks pretty hot.
this^
I actually wrote a game design document for a facebook game that closely recembled transport tycoon but incorporated more activities with friends such as pooling money together to make businesses or train routes etc. I really wish a game like that existed.
