I wouldn't go as far as saying 95% of all games lack thought and story behind the environments.. I've seen a lot of shitty ass games where gameplay is really bad, but atleast it looks and feels like you are in the world they want you to be in.
Sometimes though, I think that you will have to compromise between the two. You need to skip over some of the looks* in order to achieve good gameplay... It's just how it is.
edit: Just to make it clear, when I said looks I mean the feel/immersiveness/story etc.

haha, what reno said + the dance at the end was really awesome

I can't say I agree with JamesL. e-freak is onto something here, and I think the games industry, and the games themselves have evolved to a point where a really amazing story based game could be just as morally correct and great as, say, schindlers list.
I remember when playing HL2 ep1 and after the traincrash you need to help alyx away from the screaming zombie, then right after that she is quite sad and need to take a breather. I really felt for her at that moment, and this is what makes me believe that games is at this level.
But on the other hand, games are played by gamers, and as one here just stated; they would much prefer to be evil. What I do think tho, is that with some clever design, it still could be possible...

When all the team members are well menaged the game can be moody but when some guys are new in team or they have brain locked for critique the project will have differences.About the ego:is that bad? When I have an idea and someone is making his shity ideas on my map it is normal to say "Leave my map alone" or just "Your ideas are not good" or sth like that. EVERYONE want to make a good map but if I have to work in a team on one map I could work only with friends with good contacts...
If I understood what you said here correctly, then I don't think you will get far with that attitude. Just because it's not your idea doesn't always make it shitty. And you will have to be able to compromise.

This is going nowhere so im scrapping the 3d skybox.. Need to dramatically change some parts of my map for optimizing

What texture are you using for the bottom of the 3d skybox? Could be that the brushes are picking up light-information from the texture during rad. I had a similar problem in dod_salerno, but it went away when I used toolsblack for the floor. Also, are the brushes floating in the skybox, or are they placed directly on the floor? If they're on the floor, give them some room underneath.
I had the same idea as you, so I tried giving them some space last night, didnt work... I'll try the toolsblack idea now..
..didnt work.. bleh

the problem is the stuff in the 3dsky doesnt get the same lighting as the stuff in the actual map. I had a similar problem in one of my ins maps and couldnt fix it, so i had to remove parts of it

I dont believe that this is the problem.
1. I compiled the map with the only entities beeing sky_camera, light_environment and fog_controller. It was still like that.
2. No shadows in skybox. I have set the direction of the light environment to the east, but the west side of the buildings are just as lit as the east sides (in the 3d skybox). Hope that made sense..
I can clearly see the difference in shadows in the 90 degree buildings in the normal world, but when I look up its just as bright on both sides in the 3d skybox.
Conclusion: wtf ?

god this is annoying!

I need some help.. I've been working all day optimizing my map, and it sure has caused me a lot of frustration

Right now, the hints works as intended

What doesnt work as intended is my 3d skybox. What I did was shave off the top of my map (the player is never going up there anyway) and make it into a 3d skybox.
What happened next was unexpected. Picture explains it all. (sorry about the big picture, im lazy:P)

I have searched forums everywhere (mainly interlopers), but I cant figure out what is wrong. After running around on the map, it seems like all the 3d skybox buildings have no shadows. They have the exact same color of lighting on all sides.
I have tried putting the light_environment in just normal world. I've tried having one in both the 3d skybox and normal world. I've tried removing fog in both etc etc.. What is the problem here? I'd really rather not go back to not using the 3d skybox

I think its looking really nice, the lighting really nailed the "big city, not great weather" kind of feel..

Ah okay, so I'm actually stuck with 64 bit no matter what I do... And since 64 bit Xp sucks, Windows Vista 64 bit is the way to go..
There are several different versions of vista, what would you use if you were to use vista?
