EA tried to hire 5 core people at the same time from the original splinter cell team a while back and that was the only time that Ubisoft enforced the clause. The whole thing was taken to court and the judge ruled in favor of Ubisoft.

Now as rumor has it, the guy who did this was the same guy who issued this letter, formerly an employee of Ubi? Is that correct? Because that makes it really funny.

From an outsider's perspective based on what I've seen here and elsewhere, it sounds like the clause is there only for fuckover attempts and almost all employees can do what they want without fear of legal issues.

First of all, if FarCry had just been a new linear boring, no good story etc etc generic FPS shooter as you say, would it be such a huge success?

doom 3 sold well into the millions of copies, which isn't common for a PC title, and was one of the top sellers on the Xbox for a few months. Fifty cent's game also sold well over a million, making it a 'success.'

I had fun with Far Cry, personally, at least up until the nighttime mission. Up to that point, it lived up to some of the hype. Story was cheesy as all hell, sure, but the combat was pretty cool and there were a ton of crazy options to approach each scenario, but it still managed to be controlled enough that I never got lost. I think that's what made the combat, fun, too... AI taking advantage of more open levels made them feel smarter than they would have in linear areas... Hell, I know Quake 4 has some great AI on the marines and tacticals, but it's hard to use it when you get stuck with room/hall/room/hall/button/hall/room layouts.

What pissed me off, though, and resulted in me stopping playing it, was the nighttime mission felt like it threw all that out the window and forced you into stealth. Maybe I just suck too much at stealth, but it felt like I suddenly lost the coolest feature of the game. Had it been straight linear up to that point, I probably would have forced myself through it. But with the options that had been open to that point, I felt really ripped off.

I do want to check out Instincts when I get the chance, but I understand the 360 title (predator or something?) also includes Instincts ported over... Might snag that instead. Was this also developed by CryTek or did one of Ubi's studios handle it?

...I'd put this in photography but they're not really the artistic type to compare with what's there. plus the red-eye thing on my camera isn't working even though it says it's on and I'm too lazy to fix it by hand

I dunno, after the first barrage of stuff that looked pretty decent, I ended up having no interest whatsoever in anything to do with it... All the AI stuff or whatever they were promising sounded involved, sure, but at no point did any part of the game actually sound (or look) fun to me.

And I think I saw somewhere AI could beat the game before you if you weren't careful? Is that supposed to be enjoyable?

the logo.It looks painted on the diffuse map so i wonder why it also needs a height difference on the normal map? Should be just flat there imo

One of our texture artists actually got great results out of this on some of the newer textures in the game. Rather than just flat splotches of color, she added slight height boost (paint can/does have thickness) and specular adjustments that really added a lot to the overall appearance.

Looks good, actually I kinda like that bright hdr thing you got going in some of the shots, but it does look a tad unrealistic

yeah, definitely gives it a more stylized look... but I dig! I like how it highlights the roofline in the last shot.

Needs more windmill closeups, too. (I think that's what it is, at least)

Yeah, supposed to be a floaty space map... Problem is, they usually suck, so I'm bracing myself for failure

Level itself is a big communications array/satellite dish type thing... shall be called "You Can't Stop the Signal" - any Q4 DM maps I do will be named after Serenity lines (while CTF maps are psychonauts references )
