  • Crytek drops Crysis patch support

    • KungFuSquirrel

Long term post-release support is rare and you should be glad you get it when you do. Free content, whether patches, maps, or whatever, incurs a huge development cost that publishers aren't generally willing to offset - did you see Activision doing anything more than maybe 1 patch to games before they could make a killing on map packs on XBL? Raven's obligation to Q4 ended at the first patch so Activision wouldn't have to pay for it anymore, id's games have had longer support because they can afford to self-fund. Gearbox had to release the Halo Custom Edition that included all sorts of crazy fixes plus the ability to make user-made maps as an unofficial add-on. It's just not feasible for studios to do long-term large-scale stuff for free - as much as I'd suspect many of its employees would want to if they could.

Again, based on the wording, it sounds like more in the form of a sequel or expansion may be on the way. That's a good reason to move on. No need to brand Crytek the devil here.

Battlefield 2 (hard locked 5 seconds in on two entirely different computers after it took me a half hour each time to bind my controls)

Indigo Prophecy (get over yourselves, it's a button-mashing simon says pile of shit)

I've never seen a shooter that deals or at least show how disastrous war really is, how it corrupts people (and by people I mean YOU, the guy with the weapon). Of course most people don't care about that.

    Hell's Highway

Anyway, I love a good thinking man's shooter with any combination of creative gameplay, innovative approaches, challenging puzzles, involved storylines, etc. etc. BioShock. Crysis. Half-Life 2 even. Sometimes, though, I just want balls-to-the-wall action, total chaos, and bullets spraying all over the place. And oh my god did this deliver

As an aside, I finally got around to trying out your config last night - HUGE difference and it still runs at 1920x1200 - I'm impressed

She kicked a shotgun out of a guy's hands and beat him down with it, and took down another guy with a leg-lock to the neck.

Add in the crazy first person movement and trickery and this could be one of the most badass games this year.

    1 grid, you're fired

Very nice vibe to the whole thing. The shot of the tractor in the field behind the hay bales may not be much but it's the best looking one of the bunch if you ask me. It's a very believable environment overall with some great structural and detail work.

The biggest thing that bugs me is the daytime lighting. Maybe you're going for overcast, and maybe it's just COD4, but it just looks so flat. I've not played with the COD4 editor myself but it looks like there's a flat ambient that might be jacked up a little too high?

What's the top-down look like, if I can ask? My time with COD so far has been all SP so I'm curious to see how you've arranged things.

    Keep up the good work

edit: also your site resizes my browser, booo.

    Raven was pretty suck, then?

When it comes to Quake, despite all we went through I still tend to defend Raven and - most importantly - the team to this day. I wouldn't wish that 3-way struggle of a dev cycle on anyone but I wouldn't trade the experience I had for anything. I'm very fortunate to still be able to name 4 people from that team among my colleagues to this day.

Raven as a whole, like any other studio, has a variety of goods and bads. I'm sure anyone here who has switched studios could tell you the same. Don't let the broken ramblings of specific case spoken by a bitter shell of a man sway your opinion of the whole place - there's a lot of good people there.

I worked 36 hours straight to hit Quake alpha. This was about 4-5 months into nonstop crunch already; at one point I went two months straight going into work with no days off. Following that weekend for our alpha deadline, we got 2 days off (the ones who weren't there got to test for 2 days) and were crunching for beta immediately following, all the way through to ship another 5 months later. After we shipped, we were encouraged to used our built up vacation time - I didn't get any vacation for another couple months as I was working on the map pack and had been saving my vacation time to add onto paternity leave when my son was born, though I managed to get a couple days off to make a weekend trip back home for a football game that preceding August.

One guy on the level design team had a health condition that got worse during the stretch and he was on medical leave for about 4-5 months. When he came back he only lasted another month or two before leaving the industry entirely. Our lead designer had stress-related health issues come up as well, but he escaped to Valve a little before we wrapped up the 360 version.

Before I was hired and through my first few months I was an eager up-at-7 kind of guy. It's been nearly 3 years since that crunch and I still don't sleep normally (there are other factors too, but my schedule has never fully recovered).

  • Epic "steals" user created map!?

The level is much more similar to the user level, than to the original Epic level, so in that way yes, it is perhaps a bit strange that their level looks so alike. I think it is safe to say that a LD at Epic was browsing through the forums, and took over the idea.Nothing illegal to take over an idea though, just not a very nice thing to do. They could have at least changed the theme....

I think it's a bit of a stretch that a guy could release a map at the very end of February and then it magically shows up in a UT3 360 trailer barely a month later. Maybe there were wip shots, but even then big boat in the arctic was HL2's thing long before anyone put it in UT3.

This is probably the biggest point, but I also think because GTA is satirical, fake brands and ads make more sense than real ones.

This looks similar to the "no purchase necessary" you see on almost all contests stateside, only a different way of phrasing it. For a while it's been law that you can't actually require someone to buy your product to enter a sweepstakes, so you can also enter by mail - though most people still enter by purchase.

Why a video game tournament is considered under this I'm not quite sure; if anything it's closer (emphasis to prevent too much unnecessary debate) to a sport, where the game is simply the equivalent of a baseball glove, basketball shoes, or football helmet... right?

However, the phrasing is epic. Mad props to Blizzard Legal for that.

    well, just checking

Very strange indeed. I recommend voodoo.

Also do you have VGA input on your TV? I recommend the VGA cable for the 360 if you do; it's not a huge difference from component but supports DVD upsampling which is sexytime, especially on LCD HDTVs where native resolution matters.

I have a map prototype I'm working on that absolutely requires a >3 capture limit for flags... unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be exposed anywhere. I just need 4

Is there a hidden property somewhere or a .cfg setup I can include with the file?
