  • Help me come up with a fictional city name!

    • Taylor
    • March 24, 2007 at 1:40 AM

Mythological Underworlds/Otherworlds or gates to such places:

    Avernus

    Mictlan

    Niflheim

    Tartarus

    Xibalba

    Buddhist “Hell” equivalents:

    Arbuda

    Avici

    Hahava

    Naraka

    Nirarbuda

    Raurava

    Utpala

Words with connotations of hell you can mix it up with.

    Abaddon

    Abyss

    Aether

    Dis

    Gehenna

    Miasma

    Makai

    Nether

    Ordeal

    Pandemonium

    Perdition

    Pestilence

    Purgatory

I quite like the sound of Tartarus. It doesn’t sound like a silly name for a modern city and the reference isn’t cheesy sounding when you know what it is. I also wrote Miasmapolis, but stared at it a bit and deleted it – then wrote it again to tell you all my silly name.

Or you could go the opposite route and name it somewhere really pleasant sounding. Like Clearwater or Haven, whoa -- juxtaposition, it’s like poetry.

Motorstorm is quite nice though :G

It is indeed. While we can have another thread about Sony being arrogant twats, the 360 has mustered 3 decent games* and has been out for eons. There's no excuse for this "we're the best so we don't care" attitude we've discussed at length in the emulation, home and Little Big Planet threads; but lets face it, the games are going to be on the PS3.

    * This is subjective!

It's easily going to be the strongest console this generation, but I'm waiting until there's a game I must play before I get mine - probably Square using Blu-Ray to its fullest and creating their dream game, with 40 hours of non-stop cutscenes.*

It's poor and it shouldn't be, but it's kind of expected for a game with this kind of scope to have a patch a few weeks after release to fix blatant bugs, so I don't think that really counts as a major issue.

Unfortunately my graphics card has melted and I'm not buying games until it's replaced because it'll torment me, but I will check it out at some point. And needless to say I will buy it, even if some random guy on the Internet didn't like it.

More will come with the firmware updates. But some areas of the initial launch do look rather bleak: No FF7 and the others all have issues except the port of FFV. I can hear the cries of fanboys from here.

And while much more cult and expected of neglect: Disgaea 2 is sitting in major problems. Since it’s such a simple game graphics wise I would assume this comes from the two NTSC FMV* movies, as they say NTSC signal and FMV will generally cause corruption (thankfully neither of these movies are for end-sequences, this certainly won’t be the case for most games).

    * Koei really are lousy at localisation. They can’t be bothered to change movie format so it just plays black and white if your TV can’t support it. And on the first one they cut out the entire Japanese soundtrack** so they could put it on a CD, which never boots because the PS2 doesn’t like them. Nice job.

** But kept fucking Tsunami Bomb in there from the US release.

An Iranian official on Sunday lashed out at the Hollywood movie "300" for insulting the Persian civilization, local Fars News Agency reported.Javad Shamqadri, an art advisor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accused the new movie of being "part of a comprehensive U.S. psychological war aimed at Iranian culture", said the report.

Shamqadri was quoted as saying "following the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Hollywood and cultural authorities in the U.S. initiated studies to figure out how to attack Iranian culture," adding "certainly, the recent movie is a product of such studies."

The movie's effort wound be fruitless, because "values in Iranian culture and the Islamic Revolution are too strongly seated to be damaged by such plans", said the Iranin official.

Shamqadri, who is also a filmmaker, said that production of more domestic and artistic films which portray Iranian achievements is a proper response to movies like "300".

"300," an ancient epic about the famous Battle of Thermopylae in Greek history, set a new record at the box office in North America this weekend.

The Warner Bros. adaptation of the 480 B.C. battle took an estimated 70 million U.S. dollars in its debut weekend, according to figures released on Sunday by Los Angeles-based box office track firm Media by Numbers.

The R-rated film, based on comic book writer Frank Miller's graphic novel, tells the story that an army of 300 Spartan warriors led by their king Leonidas fought to the death to delay a massive Persian army's invasion, so that the Greeks could reorganize a counterattack.

It’s ancient, but I’ve not seen this past the rap before and it was vaguely amusing listening to the designers of old talk of an involvement of 20 to 30 people to make a game! God of War 2 has like triple that in animators!

I haven’t exactly researched this, but I hear of a lot of people buying the unreal engine, especially console games. Yet I haven’t heard of anyone but mod-teams-gone-professional using source for their product.

Well it’s my understanding more games will be made backwards compatible as it goes, as is the case with the xbox 360. What actually made me WTF reading that was the actual list of “top twelve titles,” which is clearly suspect.

Ah yes, the imaginatively titled Tayconc - clearly my finest piece of work. Unfortunately, I made others; I remember you joined the server when Tayconc3 got its first play through. I’m linking screenshots to jog your memory – please, nobody else click them.

Don’t worry, I’ve seen all of concquest_r - used to be on the rotation for most skill servers and they have a spectator mode!

  • Warhammer 40K MMOG? Fuck yeah!

    • Taylor
    • March 7, 2007 at 6:43 PM

Wacko beat me, but I typed this up and didn’t want to post it from work.

I hope WAR does well because if it doesn’t Mythic are going to be in trouble with DAoC subscriptions sliding. But I heavily disagree: I doubt the words Blizzard and Warcraft are enough alone to generate eight million simultaneous subscribers and hold them! That is an almost unimaginable amount of players.

WoW is successful because they clearly sat down and stripped away everything from the MMORPG genre that was making it inaccessible to casual gamers (which are who those subscribers are): the catass raids, the punishing mechanics, the level grinds, the reputation grinds, the grind grinds, the lack of solo – and did it right.

You can see they did this again with the expansion with reputations, professions, raid sizes and PvP system. It’s such an obvious approach you can’t really see why people kept pumping out MMORPG’s that almost revelled in their hardcore only gameplay. It’s still far from perfect and I’m sure I could rant to nobody about certain things, but that’s part and parcel of that type of game.
