There are some great games for it, Disgaea*, Crush, Every Extend Extra, Darkstalkers and Guilty Gear are how I survive public transport. But there's no point having a PSP if you can't put some dodgy firmware on there... even with those I spend most of the time in emulators.

    * English release still not due for a year...

    Minor bump.

I check a RSS feed of the design section almost daily, and I’ve found most of the articles linked to be decent, I also dive into the other sections when I’ve nothing better to do – which is surprisingly often.

A minor grumble is some articles get erroneous categories and tags, such as the TextureArchive.com article right now. It’s a small problem and letting people simply edit them could lead to abuse, but some method of slotting stuff in the correct category would be neat verging on helpful.

While this looks like one of the first great game to movie adaptations (suck it Uwe), its a shame they just couldn't stick to the game.

Advent Children and Silent Hill (ish)!

The problem is the two control schemes are incredibly different, so you’re not going to make a game that encompasses both simply.

With a controller camera movement is digital - okay, there’s analogue sticks, but the player is going to cram them to 100% in a fight – so, you need to set it a certain amount of rotation that feels comfortable, you also want fairly limited up/down movement as with a joypad after a single glance upwards and downwards you’re never really sure if the view is centred again.

On the PC you have a mouse and with that lets you nudge it lining up a sniper scope, and spin your character around 1080 degrees in a split second (turn on a dime, macross zero style).

Now make a fight that’s challenging for both? Err...

Unless you’re making a game exclusively for the console and take this into account, it’s going to end up messy for someone. To be honest, while there are glorius exceptions like Goldeneye, it’s a genre that doesn’t really work on the console, and also a genre that owes a lot to “look at our awesome engine, spend hundreds upgrading your hardware.” It should probably just stay on the PC. FPS, RTS and clicky RPG’s are basically what the PC does best (and all it does, for that matter).

I get the impression Team Fortress 2 is done, or at least is in a releasable state, and they’re releasing these teasers simply to retain interest in the episode 2 bundle.

I was trying to think of something constructive to say, maybe even debate, on the whole subject. But while thinking my hands typed out "lol episodic content," and I'll stick with that.

Nah, I was playing the full version of the game. The demo was just the first section with more monsters and guns around.

Quote from Wikipedia, the souce of all knowledge that never lies

Larry Hryb (also known as Major Nelson) chatted with Ken Levine on his podcast about the BioShock demo.[21] The demo contains the first 45 minutes of the game and includes a beginning cinematic that established a setting and beginning plot lines. The demo also introduced a few weapons, such as the pistol and the machine gun, along with powers that can be used by the main character, such as ElectroBolt and Incinerate; some of these would normally be found later in the game, but were added in the demo in order to give players a taste of the full game.

Edit: Probably shouldn't troll all the PC Gamers.

Sorry to go against the grain and all, but I played through the opening section of this today and I don’t really understand the 95% BEST GAME EVER MADE EVER reviews. Sure it looks really amazing, but when I got going I was disappointed.

Ex: My plane crashes, I travel down a nondescript lift to the bottom of the ocean to a derelict sea base, I watch someone get murdered, I find a needle on a wall and without skipping a beat I jam it into my wrist to harness the power of lightning. What?

I'll stick with it, though! Because I have nothing better to do with my time.

    • August 23, 2007 at 4:58 PM

Well, I personally don't find FPS's that exciting. I found the original Halo good, but it got overly hyped because the xbox was lacking any distinctive titles. The second was a (seemingly hastily made) corridor maze instead of the iconic outside 'ringworld' environments of the first.

From what I can see the 3rd brings no innovation and is the same stuff at a high resolution. I'm not that excited to be honest, especially since the FPS genre is so amazingly bland right now and everyone is releasing futuristic shooters filled with power armoured marines. Even Turok...

    Edit: Try that again.

All of you who are saying that your current internet lines won't be enough in some years when games start taking up 50 gigs. Well, I think you are forgetting the fact that odds are that internet connection speeds will also go up.

    Eventually.

Everyone is getting excited that we will be eligible for 24mb/s* in this area next year, so the time when 50gb files are no problemo are rather far off. And by the time it isn’t a problem everyone will have moved onto ultra definition Jesus Discs (or something) with enough storage space for a small universe and saying ‘remember those Blu-Ray Discs? I don’t know how we could watch anything so grainy on a TV instead of projected directly into our mind via some cerebral device in twelve different dimensions.’

    * For the low, low cost of your soul, excess limbs and monthly payments of blood sacrifices, the only restriction being a “fair use policy” that means if you actually use the internet it gets throttled or you get visited by serious men in big suits, with large briefcases and thin watches.

    • August 18, 2007 at 12:16 PM

I don't think it's possible for lightbox to ignore the frame it's in, since it's bound to it. You’d have to link the images normally with target="_parent" or target="_top,” which isn’t what you want.

But you can get rid of those iframes without making updating the site unmanageable. I'm pretty sure your server will allow PHP or Server Side Includes, just make a header and footer file that incorperates everything of your design except for the actual page and put those two at the beginning and end of each file.

To use PHP your pages might need to end in .php, depending on the server. The PHP one would just be:

    PHP
    <?php @include("header.php"); ?>

    - Page stuff -

    <?php @include("footer.php"); ?>
    Display More

To do it with SHTML (which may need a .shtml extension) use:

    Code
    - Page stuff -

I think most games out there portray their protagonist as good and their antagonist as evil, especially western games who want to appeal to the all important American market. There are a lot of games where you’re an anti-hero and Chaotic Good but I can think of few where you’re completely evil and your antagonist is good.

The problem with games of morals and promoting religion are they are nauseatingly blatant about the entire thing. There are a lot of games out there that cover this stuff, morale, social commentary and psychology are prominent in a lot of Japanese titles, they just they don’t shove it down your throat. I can’t think of a single RPG out there that doesn’t have some evil doer that has regrets or some glum pessimist coming round, while on the opposite side the evil guys collapse under their own greed.

Is this serious? They are making a game that is so close to iDs rage. I mean from what I see on the cover, there are post apoc elements, and it's sci-fi and it has motorized stuff. With rpg elements? Wow, iDs game also is suppose to have some minor rpg elements.

Well id are just making a game engine with some loose semblance of a game hanging off it, like they usually do these days. I don't really think anyone is excited about it.

Ok 4 player coop, yeah whatever that doesn't sound so ground-breaking to me. Maybe it's coop ala Left 4 Dead.

It's funny when magazines who get a scoop on something and go over the top. I remember when CVG got told of Halo 3 letting you change what your character looks like - hardly amazing innovative - yet it got a whole page devoted to it, 50% of which was the text "HALO GOES SUPERNOVA!!!"

Doom 3’s problem is it tried to go down two different routes: realistic, atmospheric, horror (lol jump scare), while also including bits of the older games where you didn’t question why there were 5 Imps enclosed in some wall panel and proceed to circle strafe the shit out of them.

Anyway, I'm still playing the Mountain of Faith demo on loop, and still failing hard on anything higher than Normal difficulty. But to be fair it does go fairly batshit insane. I’m trying to think of a way to word this in a persuasive manner but just download it and ignore the animu title screen. You'll enjoy it.
