Can't think of a way to respond to this but lavishing Jackie with praise, so I'll do that. The guy’s amazing! Watched Miracles again only yesterday, love his clumsy antics. Unfortunately after he wrecked his foot in Rumble in he Bronx, he's hard to get insured in the US

This is still true, but you have to wonder why a game that ends the moment your main character dies has so much potential for random death. There are two spell schools (of six) devoted entirely to chance instant-kill abilities! And they're not rare!! And hit your entire party!!! Been in the tower for an hour without a save? Reap the whirlwind, motherbitch! MAMUDO.

Apologies if this has been posted: Valve Explains Why PC Gaming's Gaining Steam.

Steam itself circumvents many problems, but as I understand Steam itself does not have enough users currently for a company to only release on that platform. So ultimately they still have to put out a boxed version to be cracked before it hits the store.

I picked up Persona 3 (it’s only just come out here! ) and it’s really awesome. The only bad thing about the game is it’s so hard to explain why it’s awesome, because you have to use "dating simulator" and "random dungeons" when describing it. But it actually works very well, the graphics are a generation behind now but work as they are nicely stylised, especially the occasional

(possible spoiler – first summon), the mechanics sit nicely together and the premise is very cool.Edit: And now they're about to release an updated version in the US and Japan with a 30 hour new side story, as well as revamp the existing story with more content. More stuff to import, stop teasing us Atlus :*(

I feel sorry for that dude at Iron Lore, but the anti-piracy thing just dropping people to their desktop could've been handled so much better - I hate to think how many sales they lost due to word of mouth.

Please, the comment was only half-serious. I think you know, that I know, that Crysis isn't just Farcry with better foliage.

But I still don't see the problem with focusing on a gimmick that people like, on the grounds that people like it. It would sure be nice if every new game offered a whole range of ground-breaking innovative features and a hefty brand of intellectualism, but at the end of the day there’s nothing wrong with ‘more of the same,’ and shooters are ultimately about boyish fantasy - even the clever ones.

I'm not sure if you were actually implying something there, maybe Cybbe has better antennas for this than me, but good that we agree...I was more aiming at the entire marketing boiling down to the rifle-chainsaw combination though.

Forgive me; my post was kind of alluding to Farcry and Crysis.

I don’t understand what the problem is, it’s as if capitalising off something different is a bad thing. You never seem to get this when the next FPS comes out, using the same formula that’s been there since the dawn of time. Another shotgun? I call cliche and gimmick.

I think it's a sad the entire game is being reduced to chainsawing humanoid monsters into pieces AGAIN...and not by the press, but by the devs/publisher

Yeah, doing the same thing again with better tech is really shameful...

It hurts because Valve built up this bedrock of awesome support in the Half-Life 1 days when supporting the modification community was their ticket for success. But, at the end of the day, most companies wouldn't give you the drippings from their nose...

  • Why Games Will Never Be Culturally Relevant

    • Taylor
    • February 21, 2008 at 2:41 PM

The article states its arguments well, but I disagree. The fact is a large proportion of kids these days play video games (or at least the boys). So that’s a huge portion of our younger culture playing, controlling and understanding video games no matter how complicated they may or may not be. And in fifty years time, which was his allotted span, they will be the older generation and we know the boys will continue to play games through their adult lives. Anything with that amount of spread is part of our culture.

Something I found interesting is he says they’ll be as mature and respected as comic books, and for Westerners that’s far from a complement, but on the other hand in Japan that’s a very good cultural standing, where everyone from every age, gender and creed reads them – because they’re not all burly men and busty women. Though our take on games is quite juvenile as it stands there’s no saying these markets won’t be encompassed as it grows. (After writing this I noticed he addressed it on one of his many edits).

Though it’s true a lot of video games are trying to be films, which is why we see this bloat in development costs and all the bad things that come with that. And I don’t ever see them invading their turf – at least not while our approach to the production process is so laughable by comparison.

I've been very careful to avoid the word "art" in this post.

The new Alone in the Dark has something about 'Real World Rules' for their combat and puzzles, not sure how it compares to this.
