  • THQ knows how to market a game

Yea I don't think she has any influence on the game itself, what does she know about videogames...the question is how many people will get that it's a parody.

Even if they've not seen what the movie is parodying, someone would have to be pretty thick to believe she's actually a producer on the title.

Either way, people are talking about it, so they must have done something right.

People are talking about it, but I wouldn’t celebrate what they’ve done. Wooing teenagers with some sultry harlot isn’t commendable. Neither is more stupid shit lampooning Jade Raymond. This is going to provide amble ammo for the people who don’t value the industry or see it as some kind of youth corrupting evil entity. The “other media sell with boobs ” argument doesn’t work either: she’s not a model, type her name into google image search at work and you’re fired. Everyone complains the industry isn’t treated with the respect it deserves and is unfairly considered immature, you have people preaching nonsense phrases like "games are art," and "games with emotion," and now you have a second rate GTA-clone with PS2-level graphics mocking other developers with some screeching plastic harpy.

It makes me a little sad that my t6 will be replaced when i start doing the 78 instances...but then again its new shit so its all good

If TBC is anything to go by, you'll replacing it way before then. And if you've any tier 5 (the old tier 2) you'll be replacing it with green purchasable crafting patterns in the first city... I just deleted two paragraphs. I can't even write that sentence with going into rant mode about the WoW I used to love.

There are two things more depressing than a games company hiring a hardcore porn star to market a game: the pathetic comments from horny teenagers celebrating it, and thusly the fact the stunt has worked perfectly.

Another Japanese band, I’d be surprised if nobody has heard of them though. Lots of feedback, drone and awesome.

And another. I think the stuff on Insomniac Doze is really good, I don't mind the older stuff but it can devolve into noise quite fast. Your mileage my vary.

    Just pleasant to listen to.

I also listen to a lot of slow, progressive stuff while I work as it's not too too distracting. Like Do Make Say Think, Red Sparowes and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Could name a load of these though, and I imagine if you know one you know them all.

  • How You Got Into The Industry

    • Taylor

I made a few maps for Half-Life and Warcraft 3, applied for a job and talked about them and design philosophy pretty thoroughly in the interview. Most of the hobbyist levels I produced were fairly mediocre graphically, and I certainly felt the interview was more important, although I was always pursuing design opposed to art.

I’ve heard countless people say these game design courses are not worth doing, though I know some people who have had success. If it lets you create something you can show and put in your portfolio that’s grand, but if they’re teaching you obsolete techniques and preaching to you about how games should work you’d have better results working on modifications and analysing/playing games instead.

Nobody playing the PC version would have avoided using quicksave. The problem is not that it makes the game easier, though you can't really judge the difficulty of something until after, it's that it ruins the suspense and tension: Investigating a noise or heading into some foreboding room is a lot different when you have something to lose, even if ultimately any encounter is weaksauce.

Agreed, that game looks fucking sick. I watched gameplay videos of the original Siren games recently, man I wish they were on PC Hopefully Siren will get a PC release this time around.

I doubt it’ll get a PC release as it’s an episodic release for Playstation Network and, I think, developed by JapanStuido that are tied to Sony. I played the Siren demo off the Japanese PS3 store and I think it’s fair to say it’s far from being the new Silent Hill. It’s pretty solid as far as downloadable games go, though.

Silent Hill 2 came out on PC as well, but it was a much lesser experience. All the secrets were unlocked on the first play-through so I entered Silent Hill decked out with a chainsaw, and they put in a quickload/quicksave function (PC compulsory!) that destroyed all the tension because you were never, ever at risk. :/

  • WoW is 500x better when you're dead.

Graphically WoW was made to age well and work on dated computers, I think the cartoony style works well.

As the game itself: I've put stupid amounts of hours into it, but haven’t played it for a long time and have no intention to pick it up again. The way the game moved forwards from launch hasn’t really been in the direction I liked and hardcore players that don't play every minute of everyday (probably the smallest demographic) found themselves with nothing fun to do. And the community within the game turned to crap when the arenas happened and foulmouthed teenagers came out of the woodwork; calling each other scrubs like RNG and cookie cutter builds are remotely comparable to the level of play featured in arcade 2d fighters.

It's more than her appearance and I'm not saying "lol rip-off," but the similarities are there. Motoko's most famous scenes are her running over rooftops, disarming/disabling people with aerobatics and shooting while falling. Which is everything in the 1st mirrors edge trailer, and the 2nd trailer is more of the same only done in an anime style. The dude above never posted again after this group tirade.

Basically, there’s a difference between an iterative process and a balls up.

Valve described their creative process, the cabal, in an article on gamasutra (I think) a while back, it sounds like a really awesome way to work and probably gets the best results out of the team. If you’re Valve. Otherwise it sounds like a really awesome way to bankrupt your company.

  • How do patches work?

    • Taylor
    • July 7, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Because the patches contain revised versions of the same files and overwrite them.

IIRC whenever there's a new patch it just dumps all the new information into patch.mpq (Blizzard archive) overwriting as it goes, and the game itself just loads whatever is in the patch.mpq with a prority over the release mpq's. If they've changed all the monster and item files every patch then you don't store (and have no need to store) every revision. I imagine most of the updates to Diablo II are along the lines of stat tweaks, opposed to new graphics.

No, I was being serious, I apologise if my initial wording was nonsensical. I've been working in the industry for 3 years, but I've never posted in here and thus never been included on the list of "mapcore in the industry" because of some internal incident (that I won’t go into) that discouraged this. Honestly, I've never been too bothered as I thought people knew anyway...

If you’re curious you can go through my www link for my portfolio and I make no such reservations there.
