I don't get the relevance of the HDTV comment.
The PS3 is region locked. PS3 games don’t have a region on them (but theoretically could). If you put something with a different region in it will reject it.

":3vk1m3fl]Playstation3 itself don't have region lock.
It does, if you try to play a foreign movie or PSX/PS2 game it won’t let you. It's just most games don’t bother with it.
The 360 is largely the same but has some seemingly-arbitrary exceptions importing from the US and, most annoyingly, all Japanese games are region-locked (so I need to buy a JP 360 for Ketsui and Death Smiles, awesome).

PS3 version won't be region locked, but I have no burning desire to import atm.

New enemy type confirmed?
Silly, they're not making new enemy types. They're reusing the Totally Rad ones from older Silent Hill games, despite the entire point being they were subconscious manifestations unique to the character. Heh, you set me off on one. I really want to know how they explain Pyramid Head.

You’re so goth you shit bats.

Why stop there? Let’s start writing in hangul.
There is an article about this every few months and it never seems to cover that English has weak phonemic orthography because of the different dialects, and how pronunciations change over the years. Writing things down phonetically doesn’t really solve this, and English doesn’t have a phonemic alphabet. Of course then there’s rewriting everything, it all seems a bit much to boost up some kids exam grades.

Few modifications and he's a metroid.

I remain unconvinced by this. He intelligently explains the difference between edutainment and entertainment, and why edutainment doesn’t work. But his ultimate solutions of subtle references and quotations are not going to inspire huge amounts of people (and, honestly, aren't that rare presently), whereas wikipedia links would just leave a bad taste in my mouth. It’s also going to be rather misleading if you do drop loads of references in, and they get blurred with all the other parts of the game.
I worked for 6 weeks with an indie developer who makes edutainment games. They were rushed, low budget, not made for/by gamers, and ultimately made to be sold to schools that would be very suspicious of anything gamey in them. This is why they, basically, suck.
I also don’t think the gap between the two is quite the ravine he makes it out to be, a case of point is games like Civilisation and Total War. These are educational, they are based on fact, their mechanics are grounded in reality, and they feed the player lots of real educational material from start to finish. The reason why these are successful is because their primary focus is entertainment. Of course historical topics have a huge advantage because it's not too hard to see a game in building up empires and crushing people under the iron heel of imperial oppression... but half the battle is getting the player interest, and I think it could be done with a bit of creative ingenuity and making sure your underlying principles were about entertainment alone.

It looks, to my cynical eyes, that he's just rewritten the Raph Koster article, How Open Big Virtual Worlds Grow.

You've been trolled, check the latest update.

I hope that's some elaborate joke, but...
I guess he could be baiting people for the advertising, which amusingly reads "buy spore."

No games company will give a monkey's.

Yes sir. And more famously it’s the one with the sexy, sexy trap Bridget.

I thought I was infamous around this parts for not being too fond of the FPS genre
. I'd pigeon hole myself as a arcade/console gamer and attracted mainly to skill-based titles I can pick up and play – I think it's my WoW antidote.I certainly agree a film-like plot is not necessary, though I think titles like GTA4, MGS4, Uncharted, etc. owe a lot of their overall entertainment from this film-like presentation and narrative. However, I don't believe these triple-A titles are the majority, and the review itself refers to only generously advertised titles. And Spore's sandbox gameplay dictates it cannot include this level of linear narrative, anyway.

They are?
I would say so. If I had a dollar for every time the word 'cinematic' was dropped. It's kind of sad it's used in the context of describing a game.
Every big budget title released these days will choose it from their list of buzzwords, I'm sure. But I don't think we're quite at the stage where we're applauding people simply for doing otherwise.

It’s that franchise, but the one with 2 planes of fighting space was a 4 player spin-off called Guilty Gear Isuka, which didn’t work very well for a number of reasons. Guilty Gear X2 and its various updates are more traditional with 2 players and one plane to fight on.

This hasn't arrived yet, but I spent

playing it in the arcade. I was expecting a few subtle tweaks thrown out for some cash-money, but they've really overhauled some stuff. I'm late to the party, but I'm liking it. They've done funky stuff to Jam's HS, though.

I completely agree with the notion that Spore is to be applauded for bringing out the best of the gaming medium, rather than doing what 99% of other games do nowadays and trying to deliver a film-like experience.
They are?
