They might add some special units for the 2nd and 3rd game? But you can only use them in MP if you own them?

If you're refering to the "units will now be unique to the campaigns" comment, I imagine it's refering to stuff like the High Elves and Naga in Warcraft 3 - which only appear in the single player and don't really have any place in multiplayer.

I'm reminded of Pokemon. I wonder how multiplayer's gonna work?

He said they are doing it this way to avoid a delay due to the single player campaign, so unlike Pokemon they will be sequentially released. He also says in the article multiplayer will be feature complete.

All this really means is Starcraft 2 will have two expansions instead of the trademark one and you won’t be able to play single player from all the races perspectives at the start, (but this is offset by each campaign being “epic”). So there's no actual reason to rage here unless they charge full price for them, but the article is not clear whether they are retail games or expansions the quality of retail games (which Blizzard expansions usually are).

Assassins Creeds ‘platforming’ amounted to holding forwards and an action button. It’s fair to assume Mirror's Edge is going to be a bit more developed.

I can't even describe how irritated I feel when someone says something like that.

    Seconded.

Ignoring the fan-base is clearly a stupid move, community is more important than ever and the whole point of reviving an old franchise is to expand on it capitalise off the name and existing fans. However, there is a rather bad ratio of signal to noise. It’s clear if they change anything fans will protest heavily against it, and similarly other fans and potential new customers will complain if the series does not advance on what came before it.

Fans will be complaining a lot more than they are celebrating. You could have a whole press release of good stuff in the game, but one vague sentence people don’t like will be picked out, assumed the worst of, blown out of proportion and complained about rabidly and often in a contradictory way. People are not looking for things to be excited about, they are looking for things to complain about, they are looking for evidence for their fear the game will not live up to the original – not matter how small, petty or uncertain that evidence might be. The same is true for all the recent revivals: Megaman, System Shock, Diablo, Fallout.

Something you can do to counter-act this, and something DX3 hasn't really had a chance to do yet, is turn up the fan service. The reason the Diablo 3 trailer contained Deckard Cain, the Barbarian class, and a number of in-jokes was to win over the fans. Though, of course, there was still that diatribe about the art direction...

    Edit: Er.

PC game prices have done nothing but fall, and console games have higher sales despite being almost double the cost.

no ... i think its because nobody looses anything. if i go into a store and steal an hd tv that store and panasonic now have one tv less they can sell.

while there are still equally many cod 4 copies available for purchase after little johnny pirated his copy.

lets use a little example here what STEALING would really be in the game industry: game X comes with 10k beta keys everyone pays for their key but i am a haxor and use some keygen or just wild guessing to find out one of those beta keys and i play the game with that key now poor sucker Y that actually bought that key cant play with it because i already registered with it he sure as hell will bitch to the developer/publisher and they will sure as hell come after me ... i would think twice about doing this or to be more precise i would flat out NOT DO IT !

Poppycock. Unless all of the hundreds of thousands of people pirating would not have brought the game if there was no pirated alternative, there is a loss of revenue to the publisher and developer. It is not a victimless crime just because there is no tangible copy changing hands. And whether this makes it infringement instead of theft is likewise a moot argument, there is a loss of actual (and potential) sales and thus somebody is losing something.

Again, we can draw from the higher sales on other platforms where piracy isn’t as easy (consoles) for supporting evidence, against none to the contrary, that piracy detracts from sales and directly hurts the people making them.

The Fallout 3 designers have played the original Fallout titles, that’s the first thing they would do when they were given the project. While it’s nice to assume the worst because they’re touching your favourite franchise, Bethesda aren’t amateurs,

Though game developers should preferably be major nerds, especially those in a design or programming fraternity. You ever seen a film director who wasn’t a massive film buff? The best games come from the biggest geeks (a less dirty word), no exceptions.

It has nothing to do with my opinion. There’s no denying he often misconstrues facts for sake of entertainment and that this jeopardises a reviews integrity.

I watch the show each week and it’s entertaining, I just get worried about people taking it as gospel.

Edit: In retrospect "terrible" isn't the word I should've used.

Yahtzee is a wonderful entertainer, but he's a pretty terrible reviewer.

He's not going to like this anyway, he's already made a reference to not liking the current development team.

Yeah I have it, it's reallly good fun. Though, I should point out those shots are taken with the 'photo mode,' which allows some effects you won't see during game (motion blur, depth of field). It certainly is nice looking though, and runs at 1080p/60fps.

fact is that most if not all people had enough wealth and were given enough service, they would not steal. ergo is stealing a protest. in our specific case, this holds true: if johnny had enough money and service, he'd not pirate; thus making stealing (or in this case, warezing) a protest against a) prices and b) service.

Again, if Johnny Iota is stealing because the games are too expensive, yes it's a protest. If he is stealing simply because he wants to get something for free, which is far more likely*, it is not a protest; it's simply theft. This is a glamorised view of what really happens.

    * It's not too hard to get supporting evidence that when piracy is not such an easy option people buy the games instead. See: Consoles.

again you're saying the same thing. i'm not giving the average pirate any credit at all, i am just assuming he downloads something for free, an action which is in itself a protest. you're thinking of protest as in some sort of boycott. johnny is thinking that he gets it for free.

Yes, I basically reiterated my point.

Saying "I'm downloading this because if I buy it I have to put up with DRM" is a protest. I don't see how someone downloading something for free, for the sole reason that they want it for free, is a protest. It’s just stealing, and should be labelled as such.

I understood what he was trying to say. I think you're giving the average pirate (Johnny Iota) too much credit to say their motivation is anything but getting something for nothing, which is not a protest against pricing, drm, quality, etc. nor is it really a side-effect. I'm sure it's true for some people, but not the majority.

    Edit: I need sleep.

  • Max Payne [movie]

If the (strangely male) Valkyrie is their take on the dream sequences it’s pretty faithful, isn’t it? Max Payne was some noir comic book narrative about revenge for his dead wife, and then him jumping at people in slow motion through a succession of environments. Ranging from a subway and construction site before the finale in a skyscraper. Pretty hard to mess up.

I'm not sure the actor does the whole noir narration right though, or resemble Max Payne... A rather strange choice.

Right or wrong and for better or worse, piracy is a form of protest, and can occasionally be effective. I don't think that very many people pirate games because they prefer it to buying, all else equal; folks pirate as a form of civil disobedience in protest of high prices, low quality, and DRM. Many of us who don't pirate still take part in an even older form of protest—not buying the game. Unfortunately, simply not buying doesn't send much of a message. I think games-abstinence can be compared to not voting while piracy could be compared to voting for a third-party candidate; one is impossible to differentiate from apathy, but the other indicates (at least in the abstract) a pent-up demand for fundimental change. If a game debuts to few sales, a publisher may think the game is just a dud, but if it debuts to low sales and an army of piracy and Amazon star-bombing, that might send the message that demand exists for something very similar to, but not exactly what's being offered.

    [Blocked Image: http://alexandertaylor.net/stuff/factual.jpg]

It's certainly very glamorous to think it as a protest, but I don't believe this holds true for the majority. I don't see little Johnny Iota downloading CoD4 for any other reason than it being free.

In the context of development software I do agree there is a dilemma. If you want a job using programs like Photoshop, 3D Studio Max or Maya you need to learn it by having the software, which are priced for organisations. While these programs do have student versions and trails, I'll concede to any argument that states these are lacklustre.
