You have to shake it out of that damn glass bottle so infact you get more irritated. That's when you go and get this:

    I approve of this post.

I used to play Sakura/Gen/Rose (Alpha Squad). But now I'm Ryu.

Haven't played it since I got BlazBlue. Should load it up again.

Your Sakura's good man. It's a shame she's so dry in this game, though. I'd abuse j.lk more but to be fair there weren't many chances in these games so maybe you do.

    I did like:

    "one more of those"

    *one more of those*

    "oh, no no!"

The design is so incoherent everyone assumed this thread was a troll attempt. There is little here of substance, it is just a brain dump of text that only makes sense to its author. Being able to clearly and concisely convey your ideas to other people is the most essential skill you can have as a designer, having a repertoire of mechanics and creative new ideas is worth nothing if you cannot accurately express them to the people who will be helping you implement them.

This design is a riddle. There’s no opening elevator pitch, no core mechanics, no information. You don’t even state the genre of the game. All we can surmise is that conceptually it’s a command centre in space, you are under attack from “unknown” enemies (info?), there are real-time events (info?), and you have access to menus and statistics to solve puzzles (info?). No picture is being painted in my head to how this plays.

I was keen to humour you and try to help, but the patronising tone you use is not helping your case at all.

Sounds like they but more effort into it than the Devil May Cry 3 and Resident Evil 4 ports. Heh.

Can't say I'm a fan of the 360 controller, though I would play this with a joypad on the PC.

That SF3 finish is still the most epic win I've seen in SF to date.

    naysayers...

Everything Valve comes out with in presentations and interviews is great. But they are in a unique position where they have oodles of cash, dedicated followers, and reign over themselves. It's all very well suggesting that people do brain scans during focus tests (or whatever), but it's not practical for most. I guess less-so here, though..

But I'm still with Mazy and Warby in that while this can work it depends heavily on your circumstances. I think indie developers in particular would have limited success trying to get funding pre-production, and would be better releasing something then having interested people donate for the next/updated/full version to be released (ala 10,000 true fans).

I think this is very much wishful thinking, and although somebody like Valve probably could get away with it, then devs with a smaller, less loyal fanbase, would probably struggle a great deal to make something like this work.

Like most of the things Valve trumpet.

Completed my 100th (console) match today. It's completely different than the arcade where people have years of hardcore fighting experience. There are people online who seem to play by spinning the stick 360 while spamming the drive button... It's kind of turned Noel into SFIV Ken. You can't read your opponent when they're just doing random crap with lots of invincibility, so you end up in a dry game of blocking and punishing (or blocking, punishing and then running away because Taokaka's guard is weaksauce).

Still haven't fought a single Carl online...

The netcode is fantastic, it's a really fast game but I can play people in Japan with no noticeable dropped frames. Unfortunately disconnecting is an even bigger issue than SFIV because you can do it while the game is loading the results screen and it still counts as a disconnect. It's pretty obvious who is going to disconnect (Jins with 100% win ratio and 50 incomplete games), but it still sucks. I guess if the game itself isn't hosting the matches it's hard to tell who disconnected, but the players should tell the server instantly when the win result comes up. The game also shouldn't track Player Match results, the whole point of Player Match is to try out strategies and fight people in a range of skill levels, the e-peen element makes them Ranked Matches with spectator slots.

Actually apply for jobs, and ignore the years of industry experience requirements unless they're something epic like 4-8. Don't sit on your hands thinking your portfolio isn't good enough.

Though I will second that learning lua is a boon as it's used for a lot these days. I believe NWN2 uses it (though don't quote me) so you might want to check that out for a 'real' implementation.

Makes me think how did Mirrors Edge get round it then?

AFAIK he didn't try it on Mirrors Edge because EA would've torn him a new one.

    Quote from Sentura

it's a shame to see such a young industry be so corrupt already.

Heh, back when the games industry started there was no legal support whatsoever and that was even worse. You'd have people hex-editing other games and re-releasing them, ripping artwork wholesale, copy and pasting stills from cartoons and films... It's more of a sign of its infancy. It’s getting better but still too few people in 'power' know much about the industry.

Kill people at school? Oh, sorry.

There's collated information about the history of this Edge fiasco here including quotes from ex-employees and his other legal threats to make money. What leaves the worst taste in my mouth about this how he has absolutely no qualms using other people’s trademarks to his advantage; Demonstrated with the coquettish advertising of his new game Mirrors and website banner. Unfortunately you can't just find a loop hole or go to court with these trademark (and patent) trolls because they have a resource indie developers don't have: lots of money. The only solution is to concede defeat and name the game something else. I'm not sure how well the Chaos Engine will do, I think it'll only stop when he picks a fight he can't win.

If this is a serious post then it really needs some work. If this is supposed to be a one-page pitch then it needs to focus on your game pillars and USPs. If it’s a high-level design it needs to contain a vast amount more detail, like the genre and not describing the enemy force as “unknown.”
