Yeah the game actually looks really fun. I'm looking forward to this one.

    Amazing box shooting gameplay.

Blizzard would be great if it wasn't for all that success.

I guess these sort of games are always quite controversial. Some love them for attempting to use the medium to tell a story or convey a message, rather than simply an excuse to shoot at things. Other people hate them because they ignore one of the fundamentals of the medium - gameplay.

I think "controversial" is maybe too strong of a word.

It's hard to deny the latter point. There is no 'fun' to be had in holding right until you are prompted to press space. There is no challenge, no risk, and arguably no reward. But does every game need to fulfill that?

This all boils down to semantics and the word 'game' is one with a thousand vague meanings where everybody has their own definition (interestingly like the word 'art,' making the question "are games art?" devoid of any substance and/or worth). Since we can’t really reach for a dictionary, I will point out something I found interesting: Titles like The Passage, The Path and Every Day the Same Dream are exhibited as games; usually with some shtick about the story, pushing boundaries, being innovative, having a meaning or a message, and that how interesting someone finds them must be directly proportional to how much the person gets it. Yet when Yahztee said that visual novels weren't games, which are arguably the most established way of displaying story with minimal user interaction, the people who played them shrugged their shoulders and said they never saw them as games anyway.

The point was publishers are in direct competition with used copies of their own games and aren’t seeing half of the sales the game makes. Publishers aren’t printing the game three decades later when the OS is defunct* and the graphics aren't so hot, or after the 50-300 years DVDs last for.

    * No games store sells PC games second hand anyway.

I guess these styleguides are just giant grid-sized rooms. But man, compiling is no fun.

I'm going to be asking all kinds of stupid questions soon. I really want to grab a bunch of brushes and models and export them as a model so I can animate them, though I'm guessing this will be needlessly complex and take 5 different packages. Are tracktrains still unusably laggy online? Oh yes, it begins.

Really gonna give it a legit chance, but I REALLY hated stuff like Ninja Gaiden and games with completely ridiculous difficulty in general. The stories people are telling about it are pretty awesome tho, hope I'll end up liking it

    What do you think?

Despite what people say the game isn't that difficult, it doesn’t go out of its way to be hard like some other titles. It just asks you pay attention and systematically punishes you for mistakes, once you know its rules you’ll be bouncing around without a care in the world.

how exactly would a level designer go about understanding "fun"? fun is such a subjective wording that is impossible to define as just one thing. one person's fun isn't necessarily another person's fun; and because of this, i disagree with your statement.

This is why games are developed with a target audience.

    I ordered Mushihime-sama Futari

And I just brought the Black Label DLC. I can’t stress how awesome this is. Sexually androgynous boy on a dragon dodges through a sea of purple then blows the face off a dinosaur. Obligatory hardest boss video that is irrelevant to 12 of the 15 game modes and destroys any potential interest due to difficulty.
