I brought Dittosiders on release day but I also traded it in afterwards. I played it through on apocalyptic from of the off, it is frustrating to begin with but the difficulty curve is completely back to front. For example: The first boss will kill you in a good 3 hits, requires a strategy with ricocheting shots onto the boss and then has a rather intense melee fight. And the final boss

    Quote

will have to hit you a good thirty times, you have 8 instant-heal potions in your bag, leech all your life back on hit, can enter (invincibility) chaos mode within gaps of about 30 seconds, and you just have to run forwards mashing attack to dizzy the boss in one hit... Okay this isn't the true final boss, but the guy after you've thought twice already (only he had boobs those times and was harder)

    .

Though, I find it interesting you use God of War as your example for a game it borrows a lot from, because I don't see it. God of War has fixed cameras that wouldn’t really fit the game, and its combat system is about attack branches and a ton of evade cancel points that Darksiders doesn’t have. But the other inspirations are clear: War is Arthas in his undead and Lich King forms thanks to his armour upgrade, the merchant is Ner’Zhul, Samael is Archimonde, that guy in your hand is a Protoss, and you even you even plummet to the ground in giant balls of fire like Infernals. The mission structure is, of course, Zelda the whole way through – as are most of the items, bomb plants, horse, etc. There’s the Portal gun, the Panzer Dragoon section... I could probably go on but I'd have to think. But there’s no denying it’s very competently done, and it’s probably a smart move for a new company. I hope the next game contains a bit more originality because the talent is certainly there.

It’s also a shame they renamed the horseman to generic names so they can play like War. Pestilence could’ve been really unique.

I think it's the sign of a good game when you log on at 3am and 5 people on your friends list are playing it. Though I ruined that by playing some gaudy Japanese shmup instead, of course. I think I'll get the first and play through that, is it fairly short if you stick to the main missions?

I really need to sort my sticks out, I've got about 4 of them now (and the SF4 one is massive).I just want to throw them all out and get a small multiplatform one with decent parts and some artwork I won’t regret. Yours is looking good!

I don’t want to revive the SF4 thread, but you play Sakura so I was going to drop the

Game of the Year: Demon's Souls

While often described as amazingly difficult and cruel Demon’s Souls is really neither. Demon’s Souls simply lacks any kind of empathy and systematically punishes mistakes to a harsh degree, and this works because every single death that happens in the game is a result of you not paying enough attention opposed to reactions, luck or reading something wrong. It also comes with innovative online allowing players to leave each other notes, party up and invade each others games. Even though it lacks any kind of scripted sequence or music, it also succeeds in being one of the scariest games this generation. Not because you are worried what vent the next alien is going to jump out of, but because you do not want to die. It would suck if every game is Demon’s Souls, but I’m glad there’s one.

true, a good product does not necessarily equal a high quality game. A good product by this logic is something that sells well. There are some high quality games (at least critically acclaimed) that were terrible products, like Beyond Good and Evil. I think this is an old discussion and a lot of have had it before on these boards. So Sentura, your point is heard loud and clear and I agree.

There isn't a single person on this board who thinks otherwise. But Blizzard have never been about making 'products,' and even if they were (which they are not, remember) it's not the most tactful response to Peris getting a job there.

This is the company that still supports and hosts free servers for games over a decade old, puts all their games through public beta, and is renowned for holding back releases until they’re polished to a capacity that makes other companies with stricter deadlines jealous.

Quality being directly proportional to innovation is debateable but not relevant, because Blizzard brings a ton of innovation to their games anyway. Yes they do. Sometimes these are obvious like adding RPG elements to an RTS series, buy they’re usually little new and interesting things for the initiated. I’m not sure where this clone comment comes from either, as while they have established franchises all the main games within a series have been substantially different.

When most people insult Blizzard on respectable gaming boards like /v/ it basically boils down to one thing. Yes, World of Warcraft is amazingly successful to a point nobody could have foreseen and they have made a lot of money, and yes some of us didn’t like the direction the game took. But this doesn’t mean they became an evil, money grabbing machine that only cares about profit. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone as supportive of their games and community.
