    and gone.Please continue meaningful discussion.

But there’s nothing to discuss! The debate is over! Now we’ll be able to read a website like the Gamasutra design section and system and level designers won’t find their, presumably primitive, subjects side-lined for endless open-questions and conclusion-lacking articles on advancing the medium through art and diegetic narratives and believable characters. Finally, there will be a single article on authoring fun mechanics and loops, breaking them down into parts, and overseeing their implementation and later iteration. Just you watch.

Well, I said for scripting and mechanical design. You can't prove that in a map with no scripting or unique mechanics.

I’m not saying vanilla maps aren’t hard to do right, but it's going to be a very hard sell that a map in your portfolio consisting of standard gameplay and standard assets is relevant because, in your opinion, it plays well.

I don't know how I ended up watching this (I do really), but: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm14480092

Might take a while to start, though I imagine it'll be on youtube soon under IKA-TEN.

I think Starcraft 2 would be great for proving scripting or even mechanical design prowess. Assuming you use the really advanced features of the scripting language to create something truly unique and not just a vanilla Starcraft 2 map, of course. LBP would be a hard sell though, and ModNation and SMB are not useful.

However, if you’re applying for level design or environment artist positions then don’t do this. You need to demo your ability to create your own assets, and place them in a general purpose editor.

Have you had the Crystarium System tutorial yet? It should be shortly after the first boss.

It's really complicated, it's like the FF10 system except it's been streamlined to the point the suffix "system" is debateable. But after about 20 hours in it'll expand slightly giving you customisation options equivalent to what Final Fantasy 1 gave you on the New Game screen, so stick with it.

But if PSN isn't up by the 15th then the BlazBlue arcade balance patch won't land and we'll be forced to play the older version at the next tournament. I will need time to get Taokaka's j.8D~A loop down too. Six of them off a 6C counter-hit for massive damage. Massive. Damage.

Eh, not really feeling your criticisms Sentura. It's not exactly uncommon in hack-and-slash games for jumping to be absent, just see classics like Zelda and Fable. And I really like the bits with loads of enemies, very satisfying to demolish so many bodies. You've definitely got some fair points Taylor, the gameplay isn't as sophisticated as God of War. I wouldn't say it has no depth though, as there's quite a bit of skill to correctly using the three attack modes in tandem with the various button-sequence combos you can do. It's quite fun if you don't adopt a 'do the same thing that works constantly' approach. I think it's fair to say that nothing in the entire genre really compares to the absolute precision which with GoW3 pulled off the formula though, so I don't really want to get into comparing those.

Well, I wouldn't really put Zelda and Heavenly Sword together. In a free-roaming adventure game there's a lot more things for you to do. I also disagree God of War, awesome as it may be, does the formula significantly better than

Well enjoyment is entirely subjective, but I will take you to task on one point: there is nothing deep about Heavenly Sword. There’s zero mastery to the game at all except blocking correctly, though handily most of your attacks have so many i-frames you're alleviated that responsibility as well. You literally need two combos for the entire game depending on whether someone is blocking or not, there's no room for creativity, and you can't even jump. Enslaved being somehow worse in this capacity is not a sign of Heavenly Swords quality either, given Enslaved’s side-lined game-part has severe input delay.

The sequel is on PSP, if you’ve got one. Both are really awesome games, though the representations of both sides are great; There's certainly no "who are the bad guys?!" theme, which is present in most SRPGs - it's country bumpkin bakers who love wildlife vs. I SMASH YOU UNDER MY IRON HEEL AND SHOOT DESERTERS IN THEIR COWARDLY BACKS. Even in the DLC where you play as the oppai enemy general there’s not much grey to it. Still, who cares? It’s fun, that used to be all that mattered, rather than a footnote to the diegetic innovative narrative of empowered accessibility.

The Third Birthday makes that scene look like the "Get away from her you bitch" scene from Aliens. Third Birthday also includes a longer, less chaste shower scene, and if you beat the game 50 times in a row you unlock an extended version that shows her ass. Not joking.

Yeah, I imagine it does. I'm with you really, Aya was a pretty strong female character who does not need "her clothes come off when she's attacked" as an upgrade. That's like bringing back Jill Valentine in a skin-tight latex suit with her cleavage out.
