If all games were coming out on all platforms I would... probably just plug a controller into my PC, especially if developers are going to use the extra processing power to put more on the screen rather than have it run at an acceptable frame rate. While the PS3 had the better interface and controller it’s really still about the exclusive games, rather than super fast RAM or the ability for my console to interact with my tablet, smartphone, toaster, fridge, etc.

One problem I did have with the 360 is it was not region locked, so to satisfy

I had to buy a second one for imports. I also had to buy a second PS3 simply because the first one bricked, leaving me with a Slim that didn’t play any of my old Playstation library. The PS3 also suffered for having the lesser version of many multi-platform titles, though the "PC architecture" should alleviate that this time around.

AFAIK the PS3 has more potential power but the development process at the start of the generation was PC/360 first and then HOLY SHIT HOW DOES THIS WORK.

I think there are some pacing issues in the demo. You get dropped in this world with a weird mix of Platinum extreme action (which is awesome, shame on the lot of you), stealth mechanics, and a watermelon cutting simulator, and then after barely a walk down the street you’re thrown into a boss fight before you’ve really processed any of it.

For instance while killing the Gekko’s I had no idea that blue means go into Blade Mode and start cutting it up... so I’d just hang upside down in slow-motion for like 10 seconds waiting for the next QTE prompt.

I beat the boss on normal without too much trouble. You can just walk forwards parrying attacks (Forward + Hold X) until you’re in melee distance and then mash like it’s Track & Field. If he glows orange without attacking and emotes something (“you will die,” “can your human mind blah blah”) then he’s about to do some unblockable dashes you have avoid. At 66% and 33% after recovering he’ll pop off and wait for you to kill some fodder enemies. There are two rations in the arena too, which is nice.

Right now I’m playing one of the most manly games every created for the manliest of men like myself. I’m, of course, talking about Fairy Bloom Freesia.

I’ve actually finished the main story mode and now I’m playing through guardian mode where you just fight waves of enemies in an arena... except that’s basically what you do in story mode too, so it's just that forever. It’s a neat little game that’s focused around a free-form combat engine where you can floor bounce ten slimes a second. I give it 10/10 uguu’s.

I'm looking forward to what exciting gameplay developers bring to the controller touch screen.

I also prefer the Playstation layout but I guess the d-pad being in the "primary" position is at odds with most games using the analogue stick for everything now. I heard people, mainly those with chunkier hands, complain the nipple-tweaking of dual analogue inputs was harder on the PS3 due to how close the sticks were, so hopefully the wider controller will sort those guys out.

Edit: Never mind I don't have to be all cryptic. It says the project was shelved multiple times for another project, at least two examples and an etcetera, and then states Sega "wasn't super pleased about the delays," implying this was not an... official shelving.

It sounds like GBX are taking on way too much than they can handle, and sadly a product that's going to sell anyway will be the most neglected.

Well, you can run through a lot of games like that to be honest.

Creative Assembly are also making an Alien game. I think it'll be rather spiffy.

I've just started DMD. The game has a great system for what it wants to be, but I’m not sure it’s rigorous enough for a mode where you die on one hit.

With 50% score it might actually be possible to see a rank under A.

It is completely disingenuous to turn all fans criticisms of the game into the strawman “his hair isn’t white” when the vast majority of complaints were neither about that nor Dante’s characterisation. There were many legitimate concerns about the gameplay changes, Unreal not delivering 60fps, and PR disasters like “I don’t give a fuck [what the fans think]” or “Bayonetta is too showy.”

All people knew for a long time was negative changes like the removal of styles or the (falsely) rumoured cooldown on guns, and gameplay footage was showing a lot of weird behaviour like Helm Breaker hitting something twenty feet above it.

I’ve played the game now and sunk a lot of time into it. I’ve completed it on “hard” and I’m about three quarters through Son of Sparda, the first unlocked difficulty. It is a very enjoyable experience and a lot of the predictions by impassioned fans about how terrible it would be, which I will reiterate were deeper than hair colour, turned out to be completely off the mark. It’s true it’s a very different beast than the previous games and much easier (if you can beat DMC3’s first boss on easy you will faceroll everything I’ve played so far) but that’s obviously an intended goal.

I would also say it does a lot of things better than the original series like having interesting combat arenas instead of mainly flat, convex boxes. Height variation, death pits and environmental damage are there and work intuitively without you ever dashing off a ledge to your death. Even accepting the more casual approach there are some problems such as: scoring being broken, strong enemies made through defence rather than offence, and everything about Vergil - but it’s really nothing to get worked up over. Ninja Theory did a fantastic job, most enraged fans have actually changed their minds about the whole thing, and it’ll be interesting to see where they or the series go next.

I really didn’t like Majora’s Mask and I don’t care who knows it.

I'm also disappointed that a search for Lost Woods returns a dubstep tragedy as the first hit.

' timestamp='1359084642' post='322139']I never played any Zelda, never was much of a Nintendo guy. I tried to get into twilight princess, played around 4 hours of it and let it go, i really can't see what the appeal is. (maybe I should have fought through the first few hours of the game, but whatever)

With that being said, is skyward sword any good?

All the Zelda games start out fairly weak to be honest. You have to jump through all these hoops before you are given your toolkit and allowed to explore. It's more tedious if you've played a Zelda game before because this period gets longer each time. For instance in Wind Waker you have all these rubbish opening stealth sections and have to run up a mountain path eight times before they give you the damn boat. But then you’re finally free to set sail in the large, featureless ocean.

I have never played Skyward Sword, it might be the shizzle, but I can recommend A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Ocarina of Time.

Yeah, I guess that's my problem. There are dozens of games out there where you can button mash to victory whereas the so-called “extreme action” genre that DMC created is now effectively gone. At this point I should link something like this (though honestly I think the jump cancel glitch/feature is kind of lame).

But, while I don’t think trading combat for story is good, nor that tryhard-fuck-you-squirrel-semen-demon-twitter-bill-o'reilly is necessarily better than anime cheese, it does sound like a pretty good game judged on its own merits and Devil May Cry is hardly a perfect series anyway.

Since this is back on page one I'll point out the leak above is lies, though actual cutscenes have been ripped now and the story is so edgy you'll cut yourself on it.

I still haven't brought this. I'd have picked it up if it was a completely different game with no pretence of being Devil May Cry, but it’s as if I believe my one sale will be the deciding factor to whether Capcom keep with DmC or abandon this experiment and go back to the old series. It seems from interviews this is a legitimate branch point and with Ninja Gaiden dead, Bayonetta on the Wii, etc. this is kind of it for hardcore action games of its ilk.

From what I hear the game is by no means bad, better than Heavenly Sword and Enslaved (but that doesn’t say much), though nowhere near as deep or intricate as the older series that has been piling on features since its inception, a fact few reviewers mourn as depth is an archaic relic of the past used to keep norms out.

To be honest, I’ll probably get it on PC later in the month, since I don’t currently have a good console setup, the framerate is bad, and there were some interesting mods for the DMC4 port.

I just beat Ys: The Oath of Felghana which is apparently a remake of Ys 3 from 1989 that I have never played. I’ve always wanted to get into the series after hearing its praises sung by numerous people, but I only just got around to it through this being an easy purchase on Steam.

Essentially it’s a hack and slash game where you unlock new abilities and items (Ex: bracelet of destroy-suspiciously-cracked-walls) that let you progress to new areas or access secrets in older ones. The main difference between this and other games of its ilk is being very twitchy and generally asking you learn attack patterns rather than taking hits and healing it up - this is particularly true for the bosses where you will need to figure out how to avoid all their damage output and have a near-perfect run before they die (though the game has several difficulties and I’m sure this is not the case for very easy).

I thought the game was fantastic and particularly enjoyed the

. I guess the story is pretty basic even for a game from 1989 but it’s charming and inoffensive. My only problem with the game is actually the RPG elements... In some games you pick up a new piece of gear and experience no real power increment, in terms of how fast things actually kill you or are killed, because it’s all balanced around twenty item slots, levels, talents, or whatever. In YS:TOF you pick up a new piece of gear and you are God and that tier of content is no longer a challenge (usually you become mortal again around the boss chamber).

While this is nice in a way because gear does something and you're probably just exploring at this point anyway, it seems at odds with the design elsewhere and I feel a couple of times even bosses are caught and neutered by this. It also means missing gear, which is hard but I actually did manage it, is massive - doing dungeon three with my starting armour was tricky.

But overall this was a lot of fun and I’ve already started Ys: Origin. Would play again. A++++++++
