I guess there's no point me mentioning you can get Phantom Brave on the PS2 as well, given that it'll probably make people choose the xbox just to make sure they never, ever play it.

Looks much better Ewok. I dig the new beacon.
How big is this town? I assume it's just a HUB town for the player to return to, buy items, sell spoils, talk to NPC's and whatever opposed to a action area? Don't make the mistake of making it too big, big towns get really irritating to navigate unless you're hitting around zombies or something. Any chance you could take an aerial screenshot and mark on it the areas of interest (shops, quest areas, exits, etc)?

It's not like it's a stupid thing for me to say with every other engine in existence not doing it and valve even realising videos of them making bump/normal maps. There's no need to be a twat about it.
That wasn't meant as a hostile comment to anyone, I was just backing up why anyone should consider my view on the matter. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.
Anyway, almost all modern engines have this increase in texture resolution, UT, UT2k4, UT3, Source, Painkiller, Max Payne, etc. It's a pretty standard visual requirement, unless you are going for a different look (dewm 3)
Ok, sorry about that. I stand corrected.

You'd better hope so.

But what do I know, I have only been working with the engine for two and a half years.

I liked morrowind until I discovered attacking things caused the game to freeze, then I kinda swore a bit and uninstalled it.

yeah and were usually right

Well to be fair, it does look like it's fake compared to the others. It basically just says "this magazine contains QUAKE IV and MORE QUAKE IV. But that's not all, we also have QUAKE IV" not a single mention of other content. Although it's possible it's not finished or is a seperate 10-page booklet that comes with it...

Doom 3 doesn't have any advantages over HL2 texture-wise. They both have normal maps and spec maps as far as I know. Dooms per-pixel lighting allows the normal maps to look sexier as light passes over them, which is not directly related to the textures themselves. It doesn't have bump-mapping, which creates real bumps on a surface opposed to the illusion of bumps IIRC.
I see the point of scaling up a wall texture 2x to get nice detail, a 256x256 texture over a 128x128 brush seems fine. However, you're being silly when 128x128 walls and 64x64 crates end up at four or eight times their previous size. If someone sits by your wall and activates a sniper scope they probably deserve a few blurred pixels.
Edit: I realise I'm digging myself a hole here, first and foremost: I'm not trying to put down the very talented work within this thread or saying it's wasteful. I'm merely posting my opinion that making everything giant is not going to fair too well. Zaphod obviously knows more about the engine than me and if HL2 IS jam-packed full of 256x256 and 512x512 textures scaled down to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, etc. of their original size then disregard my ramblings altogether.

what gives you that feeling
Because even graphics powerhouse Doom 3 rarely had textures that didn’t correctly cover the brushes they're supposed to be used on. And I had noticed already Valve are pretty sparing with their textures, even in DoD, a mod filled with giant textures, they only used the minimum that was necessary.
You could argue that reserving large chunks of memory for textures in this age is quite trivial, but there's no reason why some objects need to have a texture four to eight times the size of the game units they would cover.

I've a feeling all the real HL2 textures aren't going to be 512x512

It's all come from a magazine cover not on the PC Gamer website, most people on the HI forums are claiming that it's fake.

You have to stop somewhere but Beneath A Steel Sky = ULTIMATE.

Well John Kerry is doing it... infact.. the Navy is looking in to his little lies now... he claims to have gotten a "Combat V" on his silver star... blah blah blah... oh and him getting his first purple heart... lets see, and in his own diary while in nam he said 9 days later or something like that, that he had not been shot at yet... yeah.. this guys a bucket of truth
and far as arnold goes.. never liked him.. even when he was running for the california governor i didnt like him.. and its clear why he was on stage.. to get people that normaly wouldnt vote.. to vote for bush.. nothing more... same thing the demoncrats are doing with the hollywood movie stars.. its no diffrent...
That's a lot of trailing off and "something like that"'s. I'd be more inclined to listen to something more like this. And while the results from the navy investigation will be more solid I notice you made the conclusion "looking into" meant "he's a big fraud" when it does, in fact, mean only "looking into." But that level of fanaticism is to be expected.
And in spite of the fact that was twaddle; we all know Bush was at home smoking pot and developing an alcohol problem so one particular aspect of Kerry's war record doesn't really matter, the fact HE HAS ONE puts him a few tiers above Bush in that respect. And he's also quite fair ahead in the respect of not believing he's doing Gods work. And I'm pretty sure he won't be merging church and state so much people in his party resign when being accused of having the gay.

For the modifications. That is, after all, its entire purpose.

It doesn't really matter though does it? I don’t see how people can take sides in American politics aside from just liking one brain-dead spokesperson more than the other (notice that’s just other, singular). You can just kind of take sides at random and be ok, you don’t need to worry if anyone questions your allegiance with a question like “don’t you disagree with his policy on X” because such a question would not come up.
You see, everywhere else people are quite political about politics and elections are decided by policy and changes rather than two twats standing up on podiums and one saying the equivalent of "don't vote for him, he's a right nob, just look at all this stuff I made up about him,” and then the other guy is totally like “OH YEAH?” but the first guy just goes and says “YEAH!” and IS IT ELECTION TIME ALREADY? BUSH 2004.

It could do with some prefabs.

I'd suggest all the people deeply offended by satanchrist to go play Silent Hill.

"You know, there was another item on the news about computer games, they still say they make people violent"
"They might make some people violent, but if you are influenced by video games you could be influenced by anything. Most of the people who bring this up are just parents looking for scapegoats and cash for their shitty parenting."
"Hmph, this guy is a professor, he knows what he's talking about. And they wouldn't show it on the news if it wasn't true"
"Wjat?"
