Because it's not a mod. Read the interview. But yeah, this is good stuff. I still reckon Valve are going to end up as a super-major player in the digital publishing business as time goes on. No end of third-party games have signed up with them in the past few months alone -- HL2 really opened the floodgates. They have a (what is now) stable system, a huge userbase and it's already on many PC gamers' systems. It's ideal for developers who don't want to front physical publishing costs.

Yeah I just read about some other company today who are going to distribute their game via Steam (can't remember who but it was a moderately big name)

Yes but is any of them picked up by a publisher without help of the developer who's engine they used to mod on? :)

Red Orchestra is running on the unreal engine and is going to be distributed by Valve via Steam

It just looks like a pattern to me right now. A nice one at that but it doesn't have anything that defines it as a certain material (wallpaper in this case)...try giving a more texturey look and defining the material better that it's made of.

well, work is good although getting busier and deadlines are tight...

I still love Montreal even though winters here are a bitch

I wanna go out more and be more active but sometimes i just dont have the energy to do anything when I'm home... plus it's winter now and its damn cold outside. my gf just broke up with me a couple weeks ago for some bs reason and now I'm trying not to get too worked up about it and get her out of my system...unfortunately it doesn't always work that easily...Been getting back into writing and been playing lots of guitar....

i'm going to san francisco for christmas and will see a really good friend again (havent seen him in over a year) so I'm really looking forward to that

Okay, so how do you suggest one goes about learning to make shaders then? Any ressources out there, or just trial and error?

well hmm good questions, its different from engine to engine anyway... I'd just wait till UE3 is made available to public

I'm working on a next-gen title and it's not that different from current-gen games like Splinter Cell and the like. There are normal, diffuse, specular, cube maps and then from time to time you get to create a fancy shader for a particular surface/material. Some things are completely shaderbased without any painting done at all but thats pretty rare... so...don't worry about it now.

First thing I'd do with those textures is colour-correct them. Right now they look like straight photo rips... the grass is way too bright for example... the stone has a lot of this blueish photo tint to it which. they also all have different contrasts. get that balanced out first..

there is more to game development than drawing textures klein

OH REALLY? I didn't know that!!!!

My point was, when I'm off work I wanna do other non-game dev related things....because there's more to life than making games. I don't see how that would somehow make me a bad person who abandons the community.

  • Best Jack Thompson Speech ever (FULL LENGTH VIDEO FOOTAGE!!)

Update in the Strickland vs. Sony case taking place in Alabama, where the families of three law enforcement officers slain by a young gunman are seeking money from a host of defendents, including Sony, Gamestop, and WalMart. Their claims (or more correctly, their attorney Jack Thompson's claims) are that the gunman was programmed by and/or under the influence of the video game GTA 3 which caused him to commit the crime.

In a move that should surprise no one, Judge Moore revoked attorney Jack Thompson's Pro Hac Vice license to practice law in Alabama for the case in question. The Judge told Jack Thompson that under Alabama law, he could not withdraw from the case. He then essentially turned around and kicked Jack off the case warning him that should he ever attempt to seek a temporary license to practice law in the state again, he would have to attach the ruling statement to the application. Essentially the judge determined that Mr. Thompson violated professional ethics in the case. The judge supported his reasons with an 18 page ruling.

gamepolitics.com has some discussion going on the topic (mostly a lot of cheering), and there's a good article on the story at the Tuscaloosa News (which will require registration to read.

This is, of course, all sideshow activity to the meat of the case. In addition to filing the motion to have Jack Thompson removed from the case (granted as noted above), they have also filed a motion requesting the case be dimissed for lack of merit. In the past, when similar cases have been filed (of the "games made him do it" type), they have been dimissed on the grounds that games, like books and movies, are covered by the First Amendment and our right to free expression.

I don't see whats wrong with not doing any mod-work or community/spare time work afterhours..... how is that abandoning the community ? I don't get it. Some people here have lives... Personally I'm not gonna break my back to texture somebody's map for free if I could be out having fun doing other stuff instead.
