for a starters try doing uhh... one pixel highlights around those black...line....things

then perhaps make the edges a little chipped off or something... avoiding to paint in detail isn't going to get you anywhere. You just need to fuck around and practice till you have something cool.

afaik they are using a simple smd exporter for exporting their models pre compiling, so there definitely should be a way to export to that from max (especially if the SMD format is the same that was used for HL1).
