The pipework seems to stand out in two ways. 1) it doesn't seem to fit the theme and 2) the pinkish texture on it seems way too brihgt next to the muddied hues of the stuff around it.

Phwew, I thought this was going to be based upon modern El Paso. Complete with polluted river and burning garbage.

    Nice building though,

Good overall design knowledge is more important than technical knowledge. Technical knowledge of engines and editors tends to change every 4 or 5 years, whereas solid design work lasts forever. So the most important thing is practice, practice, practice. Your first few maps will be crap, but so are everybodys. Learn to make a room and spawn in it. Learn to make a house. Learn to make a bigger building. Just keep it one step at a time. If you don't know how a certain thing works (like how to make a rotating door, or how to do terrain, etc), read some online tutorials and make a small map to test it out. Once you've figured it out, you can apply that technique to a larger map. Most of all, have fun. If you're stuck on something you don't enjoy, it usually shows.

I'm sorry, but after "Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game Of The Movie" game titles now have a 50 character limit or else fines will be limited by packaging printers everywhere.

I would have prefered "King Kong: Have a free 1000 XBL points!"

  • Developers ditching PS3 in favor of Wii?

    • Fletch
    • June 14, 2006 at 10:19 PM

It's simple business. Right now the Wii's development costs are relatively cheap, and being a launch title gaurantees that you're going to get a lot of free PR, good shelf space, and a lot of units sold simply because it's a launch. That high return on low investment. PS3 is running high return on high investment for launch titles, so the smaller companies won't like that risk in the short term. Long term, the PS3's dev costs will go way down, so the smaller developers and publisehrs will get back on board.

Good for Nintendo in the short term, neutral in the long run. The important part is that Nintendo's last two home console launches (N64 and GC) have been disappointing because of lack of titles, especially from third parties. So this seems to be a good sign that they have learned their lesson.

Great finish to the Germany v Poland match. I thought the Polish keeper was about to have a heart attack in the last few minutes.

That reminds me of being recruited to the ill fated Jurassic Park mod for HL1. The point at which they explained how one of the levels would be a free roaming Jeep mission as a T-Rex chased you before you all crash over a waterfall. Then I just started laughing.

Running on 2 AA batteries worries me a bit. I'm surprised by anything doesn't run on Lithium Ion batteries. 2 AAs just aren't going to get you through a 2 hour divx file.

Targetting commanders in a battlefield has been an American tactic since the Revolutionary War. We were the original assholes.

This will be appealed to the Federal District Court (probably Northern Oklahoma District) by the ESA. My guess is they'll file papers within the next two weeks. Given the fact that the langugage goes farther than most of the laws that have already been overturned by similar courts, the District Court judge will probably overturn it on constitutional grounds. It will then probably be appealed to the 10th Circuit by the state of Oklahoma. This is where it gets sticky. The 10th Circuit is one of the most conservative courts in the nation in regard to "social" issues. It covers Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and New Mexico. The 10th Circuit does, however, tend to rule on the side of corporations in cases that involve free enterprise. So this is really a toss up. My best intuition would be that the 10 Circuit would quickly deny the appeal without having to go through another trial and make a ruling. When in doubt, don't set legal precedent.

See, two semesters of Constitutional Law pay off for something.

As for games as porn: I say let the ESRB do it's work. These laws and lawsuits and probably good in the long run because its going to force the ESRB to take a hard look at restructuring it's ratings and process for rating games, jsut like the MPAA and RIAA have had to do in the last 20 years. Personally, I alawys enjoyed the PEGI system better because it makes finer distinctions between a 12 year old, a 16 year old, and an 18+ adult. I think a 15 or 16 year old can handle a game like Brothers in Arms, where as maybe they shouldn't be playing Grand Theft Auto without asking their parents.

oh, Fletch, your story introduced discussion of an awesome (like horrifically terrible style) new game after I shared it with a few people at the office. sadly I don't see it ever seeing the light of day...

i know running Hammer from the command line with -dxlevel 80 will put it back into DirectX 8.0 and fix the visual issues.

from what i hear, cubemaps, hdr, and everything else will just stay borked until Valve releases a patch (which will probably by December). You just have to realize that Valve hates all of their customers. ALL of them.

Oh and redarding Half Life 2: Episode 1, it's an expansion pack. Gabe Newell can polish up the language with some nice PR spin, but it's still a freaking expansion, even if it can be played as a standalone game. Blue Shift could be purchased as a standalone game (and it came with Op4 and CS).
