    Looks awesome!

I do think the theme could be worked better though, I can't tell what this place is supposed to be. Is it a space station? A mining station? A research station back on Earth? The rooms serve no purpose, other than leading to other rooms. I could be wrong since I haven't played the map but that's the impression I get from the screenshots.

Don't get me wrong, the execution is spot on, I just think these maps could be worked better theme-wise, my 2 cents

It kinda sucks that everything is CGI though, takes away most of the old school vibe imo

You become an egocentric asshole that nobody likes when you start thinking you are better than the others and have nothing else to learn.

In all my years of games industry experience, I noticed that the guys who needed to learn from others the most were usually the ones that did completely the opposite. I also noticed that the best artists, the ones that truly inspire me and bring new solutions to problems are humble, listen to others and always seek new stuff to learn, it's a direct correlation imo.

Never stop seeking knowledge, that's the only way to grow both as an artist and as a person

Merry christmas guys! I'm hoping you guys' have had a much better christmas than I did. Nothing really horrible, but still not the best way to celebrate

This years' christmas eve was spent at the hospital as my wifes fever got too high and the doctor at the emergency room registered a pulse at around 150. This gave off a lot of alarms as shes has a risk of developing a blood clot (shes done so before and it nearly killed her). As she's 26 weeks pregnant she is on blood thinners as a precaution, so a blood clot forming is highly unlikely but the doctor could not risk it so she was sent to the hospital 30 minutes drive away by ambulance since he wasn't equipped to do the necessary tests. I had to leave our son to the in laws to follow her by car, as we were at their place to celebreate christmas. He celebrated christmas eve with them and some of their extended family and had a great night.

She was eventually diagnosed with pneumonia, and they were certain of this at around midnight. Then they put her on penicillin and I went home for the night. 4 hours of sleep later my son woke up and we unwrapped some more presents together (that had been lying in my car the past night). He's only two, so it's probably better to spread out the presents anyway. He was super happy to receive so many presents two days in a row Then when it was nap time I left him with the in laws and drove to the hospital again. Her pulse was down to 120 and the fever had broke and she was feeling a lot better. She was then transferred to a hospital closer to our home so I packed up all our stuff and took our son home too. She might be released tomorrow.

    So tired now

  • Specular Map question.

Specular maps are an approximation for how much light a surface reflects back. Before the adoption of physically-based rendering in the newer engines (google for it), this value could be anything really, which in turn lead to a lot of consistency problems, since in real life no surface can reflect more energy than it receives, but in a game you can crank up your specular highlights to any value you want. Reflections were done separately either by linking your material to a cubemap or using real time reflections (for water and shit like that).

I never worked with a PBR engine, but from my understanding the actual reflection is derived from the specular intensity and roughness (glossiness) terms. In pratical terms this means that the highest the specular and roughness, the stronger and sharper the reflections and highlights are, while a low roughness value creates a fainter larger specular highlight and blurry reflections:

You can try the new Marmoset toolbag to check out how PBR works, but at the end of the day keep in mind that these are just approximations, we are making games not science

I see a few baking errors... did you set your low poly to 1 smoothing group by any chance?

You might also want to consider nDo for this kind of stuff, I don't see any shapes there that couldn't be made faster and easier with nDo. If you want to really practice baking, go bat shit crazy with the hipoly and get the most mileage out of it possible, right now you only have some simple shapes that take a lot more time to bake than to do by hand in nDo

nDo is not just for tilable sci-fi panels, you can use it pretty much for anything environment related.
