This is turning out to be the best world cup ever! Was really cheering for the USA today, even though they are pretty limited skillwise they were playing like men and looking to score all the time, while portugal was mostly diving and trying to fake penalties. booooo
anyways, it's gonna be interesting to see Brazil tomorrow, we either start playing football again or we will probably be done for this WC.

Thanks guys

Yeah I wouldn't worry about that stepp. PBR only makes authoring textures much faster and easier. There's a misconception that PBR is only useful for ultra-realistic styles but in fact it's just a system to describe materials easily, it all depends on how you use it. I even wonder if the new Mario Kart uses PBR because the materials there are some of the best I have ever seen.
It's pretty simple to think in PBR terms and just by looking at a surface one can have a rough idea of how to set it up in PBR, whereas that would be almost impossible in the old way. Basically when making a material I ask myself: is this a pure metal, a painted metal or something else? If the answer is pure metal then I use pure white for metalness. If the answer is painted metal, I use a 90~95% white for metalness, otherwise I just use pure black. Then all you need to do is to define how reflective/rough the material is and make your roughness map. The roughness map takes care of 3 parameters at the same time: specular, glossiness and reflections.
This chart is extremely helpful:

So awesome... something funny is going on in my pants :X
In the way of crit, I think the parallax window textures aren't working so well, the illusion is broken if the plane is too close to the viewer's eye, it needs to be masked with some actual geometric depth (like on the right building in the 2nd shot, some black insetting/bordering). I also think you should try to restrict yourself to the main color blue/purple, one other color, and then one rarely used one for spice. You've got a bunch of colors in there, and I'm not sure they aren't clashing atm.
Yeah you are totally right
My intention for the color palette is for the main color to be blue/purple with orange as a secondary color, but at the same time I don't want to restrict myself to just those two colors because well, a city doesn't follow rules like that
I think it's just a matter of finding the ideal balance which I'll hopefully do as I go. My plan for the color palette is for it to be:70% blue/purple
25% orange/gold
5% other accent colors (small signs, techy pieces and shit like that).
Good point about the parallax windows, I'll try to add an extra lip in between floors, that should help

Pogos: I'm actually not following any specific concept or reference pictures because I find doing that very restricting. I went that route when I started this project and it really got in the way, so now I restrict following references too closely just for specific things such as how does a storefront door or how sidewalks look in real life. But of course when I need some inspiration I hop on street view, check out some of my books or go over my references folder, but as I said, I'm using those resources as inspiration and not as reference. Reference is limiting, inspiration is not

Sigma: They are pretty simple actually. I'm not stressing myself too much on how "physically correct" they are, but instead I'm focusing on getting them to look "right" (which doesn't necessarily mean "accurate" if you get what I mean). Hey guys! Figured it's about time I started a WIP thread to document progress on my new scene, simply called "SAMPA" for now. My goal here is to make a small near-future city corner to get started with the PBR workflow and take advantage of the new Unreal 4 goodness. Loving the engine so far, it's like a dream coming true
Anyway, it's still pretty early in development but hopefully the vision I have for this should already be pretty clear. Some assets are in completely different stages of completion than others so nevermind the placeholder stuff for now. I'd say this is about 30% done so far, still a long way to go! Finally someone talking some sense on this silly fucking thread.
What's the point, really? What is there to gain? Change? Sure, OK go ahead and be the change you wan't to see in the world, because bitching and moaning wont get it fixed, it will only lead to dispair and focusing on shit like this is so pointless to me.
We're an inperfect race, with two inperfect genders. People want to work towards achieving perfection, start by looking in the fucking mirror and work towards a greater good. All I see here is a bunch of people pointing fingers and in the end, you got nothing to show for it.
If that Sarkesian chick wants games that catter to her and her cult, she should have kickstarted for a gamedev studio to make a change, instead she decided to be in the business of attention seeking, where she's playing you all like a fiddle.
In the end, this is just a dismissal of any criticism. Some people don't know how or simply do not want to make games, so they then have to criticize what's out there right now. The whole "why don't you do better" response is a shitty cop-out to get out of taking a look at how you can improve. It's a possibility that the people making the games under analysis here simply don't realize the impact of their design choices. This project isn't out there to say games are shit, it's taking a deeper look at how they can improve, as criticism should.
I'm not dismissing the criticism but I'm not gonna waste any energy on something that I can't solve. In fact I might even be part of the "problem", because as a man who admires women and consider them superior than men in many areas (including their physical beauty why not?), I'd rather play a game with sexychicks than a game with non-sexy chicks. It's an aesthetics preference, I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise lol.
Does that make me a rapist or a wife beater? Does playing GTA make someone violent? I don't think so.
Imo this is one of those cases of when you have a hammer everything looks like nails, and the more energy on spend on it the deeper you bury your head in the sand.

England and Spain play boring football, they are paying the ultimate price now

How come a guy like Rooney has been the main attacker for such a long time, I don't get it.

What I hate about Anita is the fact that everytime her name is brought up it instantly turns into flame war. Sure she raises some valid points but there are much more important causes people could be acting on or spending their time on. Humanity has been like for millenniums, videogames are just a reflection of society not the cause of the problem.
This reminds me of Fox News anchors blaming videogames for school shootings and shit like that, when even though the real causes for those events are much deeper they never get any air time. Organizations like Fox News and people like Anita are in the business of attention, they distract people from real problems and pitch them against each other to benefit from it. As a rule of thumb, if you choose a cause to follow which feeds on the "us vs them" paradigm you should probably get out of it immediately as it's likely to be bullshit.
Tbh if some women feel they are under appreciated in games they should either:
- Start their own studios and make games the way they think games should be.
- Boycott games they disapprove.
What have 15 pages of discussion on this thread or even millions of views on her youtube videos accomplished so far? I dunno, but sites like kotaku, jezebel and polygon are definitely making some money out of this.

Indeed, with just a few good games out this console is already waaaaay better than the other ones.
My only disappointment so far is not being able to use the pro controller on Wii games. I got Xenoblade but can't play it because not even the gamepad works for Wii games

Well, since I was gonna rant and feel sorry for myself I thought it best to write it in a more light manner PogoP.

It is completely debilitating, I just stay in a dark room for the entire duration (if possible). I do listen to some low-volume, low-intensity music to have some sort of distraction though. Well, my doctor says it's tied to my surgery and stress. Getting major heart surgery and having your ribs cracked open and healed twice does a number on you and it takes a while for the body to truly get back to normalcy. So, the theory is that my base "stress level" is higher and it is much easier for it to peak, or join forces with other factors to induce a migraine.
Don't think I've tried sumatriptan yet. I've tried the stuff that is supposedly one step stronger than that though and it didn't have much of an effect the times I've tried (which doesn't mean to say that sumatriptan will be of no use, it could possibly be more "compatible" with me). I will speak to my doc about it. How long does your attacks last and do you get crazy nautious? Do you get an Aura (blurred vision etc?).
My migraine evolved quite a bit since I had the first crisis when I was 17. That first crisis was no doubt the worst I ever had, I remember crying in pain thinking I was having an aneurysm lol. The first few crisis were pretty brutal since I couldn't stand any light at all (just like you now) and even the small light from the PC power button felt like needles in my eyes. I basically had to be in a dark quiet room for a few hours until I was good again. One day I made the mistake of going outside and I could barely keep my eyes open.
But then I stopped having auras and the pain became more manageable. These days I can even work with a bit of migraine or watch a bit of TV (games are completely out of question though
).I'm sure you will get better in the future, just keep trying different medicines until you find one that works for you. I had to try about 4 or 5 different formulas until I found sumatriptan. I hope it's something that will go away once you are completely recovered from the surgery, but even if it becomes chronic it won't get worse with time, so don't panic, you just have to learn to live with it and you will have a completely normal life

One good tip is to read a lot of about it so you understand better how to prevent the onsets.

Got 2 migraines in the last 4 days. I hate this motherfucking cocksucking shitalicious fucking shit. Maybe gotten a total of 100 or so during the last year and I'm at the end of the line here. I've always gotten migraines but it was always like once or twice A YEAR before my surgery. I just can't stand getting beaten down by this shitty shit. It's always the same, always the same shitty shit. Bam, start losing my vision all of a sudden, things go black and blurry. I now have 30 minutes of blurry shitty perception to contemplate the intense shitty pain that is on it's way like a shitty fucking train. Then 3 to 4 hours of intense pain in ONE fucking shitty spot which God surely must have declared to "fuck this part of your brain in particular". Then 1-2 days of feeling sore in the head like a prison-raped asshole and feeling like a groggy little shit. Fuck. Shit. Dick. Anus. Motherfucker.
Any migraine-sufferers here that can share some survival tactics?
I've been suffering from Migraines for years. Have you tried sumatriptan already? It did wonders for me. Everytime I feel like I might have a crisis I take a pill and it goes away in 30 minutes. My quality of life improved immensely after I started taking them since my previous medicine would only work 50% of the times and the side efects were pretty brutal. Sumatriptan works 90% of the time and I never feel any side-effects. (Damn, I sound like a spam bot)
Fun fact: I used to have maybe 3 to 6 crisis a month before I started using some green "migraine herbs" more regularly. These days I have maybe 1 crysis every 2 or 3 months. Definitely look into that if sumatriptan is not being enough, natural stuff usually works much better to prevent onsets, are cheaper and much safer
Quote from PogoPHaha, sorry to laugh Puddy but the way you worded that was quite funny!
Really sorry to hear that you're still suffering with those migraines, mate. They sound pretty hardcore. What do you do during those migraines? Is it completely debilitating? I'm gonna sound like a bit of a hippy, and I'm sure you've already tried this, but I wonder if relaxing music or something may help?
Did your doctor give you any more info on what is causing these migraines?
Most migraines are triggered by physiological factors such as chemical imbalances in the brain, an injury, lack of sleep etc... Music will only make it worse

The thing with migraines is to find out what triggers them and avoid them at all costs. For me the most frequent culprits are irregular sleep patterns, lack or too much sleep, greasy foods and some kinds of wine, but sometimes a lot of stress can also trigger a crisis.
Something I read on a migraine book once that fit me pretty well was that people who suffer from migraine usually have more sensitive senses. Sometimes a strong odor can trigger a migraine for me for example, so definitely avoid extreme odors, extreme brightness, extremely loud music etc...
Fun fact 2: I know I'm gonna have a crisis later in the day if when showering in the morning the smell of shampoo bothers me too much.

Maybe they downgraded the PC version so the console versions don't look ridiculous in comparison? let the conspiracy theories begin...
I might actually pick this up later on when it's cheaper cause htat looks pretty sweet

Pro tip: ctrl + shift + L bakes static lighting for cliffs and terrain
(you can tweak the shadows intensity under map properties)
