    Hey!

After seeing that gamedesign bundle thread I thought it would be a good idea to have an updated thread with free tutorials and resources for game art and level design.

I'll start with some youtube channels I follow and can keep this up to date as we go like the job census thread.

You can click on the "udemy" link underneath the title to preview the contents. I previously bought the hand-painted texture one and it's a pretty good value at $6. It's by the lead character artist on WoW.

By the way I highly recommend signing up for the Udemy newsletters, it's a huge website with lots of gems buried in there. 3d-motive for example is selling all their stuff there now and every now and then they get some crazy good deals (like $5 bucks for a course etc): https://www.udemy.com/u/donott/

I'm pretty sure there's a sale coming up at black friday or something, so watch out for that

It makes sense though... Who reads comics these days? Only a fraction of the audience from 20 years ago I'm sure. Those stories are just being transported from a dying media to another which connects much better with this generation

The quality of these movies also got a lot better recently. Would be awesome if the same attention would be given to games, super hero games have been lagging behind for a long time now and the gameplay potentialithere is pretty much infinite

Pretty crazy to think that 15 years or so ago a movie like The Avengers would be virtually impossible to make. Now they can pump out shit like that every few months.

  • What have you read lately?

    PSX era:

Vagrant Story (Love the mood and soundtrack, combat system is very convoluted but fun once you get it)

Saga Frontier (Beautiful graphics and soundtrack, great combat system)

Gran Turismo 2 (I never played the other ones but loved the career mode in this. Really miss a racing game with a nice RPG vibe)

Tony Hawk (proper arcade'ish Tony Hawk with good controls would own)

+ one for Need For Speed Underground 3. Could also be an interesting MMO. Imagine how awesome it would be to start with a crappy car and work your way up by grinding drag races in the ghettos of Los Angeles

This probably won't create any mass shooters but will surely be used by conservatives to push more regulations on our industry. It will also take just one random shooting (that happens all the time in america) for them to put the blame on this game and call for the devs' heads. I understand the freedom of speech point they are trying to make but I don't think society is ready to have that discussion yet.

This game should really fall in the same category as japanese rape simulators and shit like that, niche games that do exist and help twisted minds alleviate their desires, but are kept confined to the darkest corners of the internet.

But yeah, this is pretty fucking distasteful. I'd never work on something like this.

The way I see that this working is if small groups can contribute independently to the project. Interdependency is a big enemy of community projects like this. For example, a single-player campaign is pretty hard to pull off with a mod team because everyone will have different ideas about the storyline, continuity etc... wheres a multiplayer mod, something basic like let's say a post-apocalyptic arena shooter, offers an open canvas that anyone can contribute to. Playtests can be held often and things changed based on feedback.

That's how we worked on Insurgency, we had a small core team working on the main features (code, weapons etc) and a much larger content creation (maps, characters, props, textures etc) team just pumping out stuff individually.

If I could give my 2 cents I'd vote for something on the scope of the Decadence mod: a few player models, weapons and maps to start and see how the idea grows from there

Another thing that could be cool is if this mod/game is created in "open beta" mode from the get go. This way anyone could download the base, create content for it and if it's good enough it's added to the game by the core team.

I was all over this game at first but I completely lost all interest when I reached level 12 or so. I just can't find any reason to invest any more time in this when I have so much more interesting stuff to do on my backlog.

I don't even understand what's the need of an "MMO" part because it adds absolutely nothing to the experience. The game experience could be summarized as a shallow coop game where you can go to a hub to see other ghosts ignoring you to complete their silly errands as quickly as possible, to *maybe* get some satisfaction out of a slight stat increase. There's no ingame economy at all, all your items are trash as soon as you get a slightly better one. You don't get to make new friends since social features are pretty much non-existent. The backstory of the game's universe is actually pretty kickass but you don't see any of that during gameplay.

Let's take WoW for example. It's a game that you can play for weeks, go play something else and go back anytime. There's always a sense of progression and millions of different stuff to do. Not feeling like doing dungeons today? Fine, you can fly somewhere to farm materials and sell them on the Auction House, a place where prices are controlled by real economics and big shot players can even manipulate it. Hell if you want to be a blacksmith and just make items to sell on the AH you can do that too if you are so inclined. In WoW there's a sense of ownership of your character, you grow attached to it because it feels like a real, unique character. It's your avatar in that dream world.

In Destiny everyone looks exactly the same. I can't tell if someone is level 1 or 20 by looking at their gear alone since they all look the same. MMOs are all about showing how big your virtual penis is and that's not fun in Destiny.

Don't get me wrong Destiny is not a bad game. The metagame (which makes or break an MMO) just isn't there.

I'll give this a rest for now and maybe come back in 6 months or so.
