The new Resident Evil CG anime on Netflix, I really liked it, it's much more Resident Evil than anything they made after 3 :)

I actually picked it up again (after trying it before and not liking it), but second time, I actually quite like it :D Love what they do with the gameplay once you unlock a few abilities. Can tell they put a lot of love in this game!

The remake could have been a masterpiece (it's from the same director as Elite Squad, the dude knows how to make gritty violent movies). However, the studio interfered creatively a ton, and mandated that the movie be PG 13 :(

Excited to try this some point in the future! Glad to see you can port UE4 projects to it.

+ 1 about brush modeling. I tried a few options for Unity and none of them work as well as Hammer. They are either a bit laggy, or just weird in general (liek in ProBuilder I keep losing the pivots and weird shit like that). And there's also other really stupid shit, like you can snap translate and scale, but not rotation with ProGrids! (And Unity default rotation snap gives me fractional numbers sometimes).

It's hard to believe how they spend so much time and work into huge esoteric features, while basic things like those are either overlooked or non-existent :D

Got me thinkin how i don't get tired of the same maps, me and my friend always discuss what map we hope for in the loading screen and we always seem to hope for different maps. The only one i dont enjoy as much as the others is Paris.

Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. But i think that the chokes are too tight (compared to Hanamura where you have the left window as an attacker to play around). I remember feeling the same about Horizon in the beginning, but now i really like that map too after it got revamped a bit.

Also, i don't know why but we both seem to enjoy Watchpoint: Gibraltar as attackers but not as defenders. Have no idea why tho!

Once it was announced i wasn't really that into it. I did not see the fun in the game, but then i got the beta.. Oh boy. I really can't wait for the sequel and new heroes/maps.

I was thinking about why our maps are so replayable the other day too, compared to other games I've played. This is a completely subjective answer, but I think one of the major reasons is the amount of themes we have in maps. For example, in Hanamura you have the city (which is made of just a few reusable buildings), the dojo and then the temple. Basically 4 or 5 different main themes (city, garden, dojo, temple + futuristic city in the backdrop). For Numbani, it's even more uniform, with small variations here and there. In a way, this makes these maps less overwhelming to take in, since the brain doesn't need to comprehend so many different structures/themes/surfaces, while at the same time trying to think of strategies and react to the action in the map. That takes a lot of brain power! Having more controlled and well defined themes also help a ton with navigation, so you don't have to think too much when running around the map.

As comparison, I played a bit of Rogue Company the other day (the environment art looks sick in that game!), but I found that the maps suffered from too many different themes. I remember a map that took place in an skyscraper, and inside the skyscraper you had a mall, a car museum, an egyptian museum, a Mesopotamian museum and a rooftop garden (if I remember correctly). It was very overwhelming to navigate, since there were too many different details and themes.

This argument can also be said about CS. The most replayed maps are usually the ones with more uniform and easily comprehendible themes, such as Dust, Aztec, Inferno (especially the old one), Nuke, Assault etc...

There's a sweet spot when a map is not too simple and not too complex, and while art is a major component, level design and lighting play huge roles too. I was never a big fan of Prodigy, while it looked cool, the design was very complex and sprawling and the lighting was very uniform throughout the map (this is another criticism I have for a lot of new CS:GO maps that I see these days, they are all uniformly lit, with little sense of direction).

Anyways, this is a good subject to jam over some beers :D

Watched another one of Adam Curtis' gems on Amazon Prime. This one is about how we gave away control to machines and adopted theories that see everything and everyone as just agents in a system, a system that supposedly can be tweaked to try to achieve stability. But as history and science shows, nature isn't stable and is constantly changing and human psychology is inherently chaotic. Attempts to control them, even if well intentioned, often lead to catastrophes in the past. Anyways, nice history lesson with amazing footage from the past. It's hard to believe this guy has so much space at BBC :)

I'm not expecting anything to go back to what you guys consider normal for quite a while.

Majority of my friends are pretty fucked up now. Two of them are now full blown agoraphobic and are both on heavy ass medication just to function. My 3rd friend is in therapy and my 4th friend is self medicating with the special herb and I don't feel too amazing but I haven't needed to resort to therapy or meds. They should of kept the gyms open, the specific rules for some things were just daft. And I love the British news headlines "Soon you can hug again!" Oh fuck off.

Looking forward to seeing the mental health fallout explosion from this.

Sorry to hear times are tough for you. If you get tired of UK gloom, in California there's someone that loves you...

I remember watching Dragonball VHS tapes as a kid, because it leapt off the Blockbuster shelves like nothing else. It was just right there in a league of its own. But I think DBZ had a more epic narrative arc and I don't think there's a teenager or young person on earth that wouldn't get swept into that formula, there's a reason it's so popular. I don't think I would go back and watch it as an adult though because it wastes an astonishing amount of time. It's so poorly edited that everything else it does well becomes irrelevant. Maybe that's what Invincible is trying to do, just edit DBZ to be watchable, but I think plenty of youtubers have done that already.

Look up Dragon Ball Z Kai, it's an official recut/remaster with all the fluff removed. The pacing is soooo much better :)

DBZ is even more watchable now than before imo. It made me appreciate how it's such a deep and consistent world!

It really depends, what's the quality level? What's the team's experience level? What tools are they using? If they are using Duke 3D editor you could literally make a map per day, but if you are aiming for PS5 graphics you will need a big team and tons of time to make just one map...

    Great insights, keep them coming!

The more I think about VR, the more I think that it's a misconception that it's a "replacement" for real life. Just like any other new media, it will have its own applications and uses, and we are barely scratching the surface of what's possible. I really have no interest to play games where you shoot robots or zombies (like 90% of VR games). But visiting the Cologne Cathedral in VR was a great experience.

VR is in a strange space right now, because it's too small to make quality projects financially feasible, so most of the stuff we see is sub-par mobile games trying to make a quick buck. There are some interesting experiences, but they are all very niche. Honestly, it's a very exciting space, kind of like the internet before Facebook ruined it all :)

My girlfriend has been willing to go back to her place in brazil, to meet her family and friends, the last time she went there was more than 2 years now. We've been acting as the "good students" from the beginning of that pandemic, working fully remotely since the beginning, following all the sanitary measures.

In the beginning of 2021 we decided she had to go back there for vacation, it's been too long and it's worrying for her, for her mental health it matters a lot.

A flight was planned for this Saturday, 1-month vacations, and 2 days ago the french government decided to put a stop to any flight between France and Brazil (no tourism trip is allowed for quite some time already, this time it's targeting all the flights).

This is bad and Brazil politics is absolutely nuts so it's not going to get better magically any time soon.

Vaccine won't be before the end of the year for us; no official waiting list is made anyway ...

I'm glad to see some of you getting it, that's really important. Thank you

Sorry to hear about that. I was in a similar situation, haven't been back to Brazil in years and bought tickets to go with my gf last year. We were supposed to fly in April, but then covid hit. Looks like we won't be able to go for a while :S

This shit seems to keep coming and going in waves...

    Another weekend, another update :D

I just finished recording a "crash course" on making textures, by using a combination of Substance Designer, Photoshop and Zbrush. I start from zero and assume that you never used SD or Zbrush before, and walk through the tools I use the most. Still a lot of polish to do with these, but I'm digging how graphic they look already :)
