  • "Modern Warfare 3" ??

Well...it's definitely a Call of Duty game...er a Modern Warfare game. I view this how Madden or FIFA loyalists view those games: you're going to buy the new game every year. I admit it: I enjoy CoD/MW games and I ain't gonna skip this one. I know what I'm getting and I won't really have to challenge my brain to much to learn something new...and it will interesting sequences like rail shooting and boats and flying things and falling skyscrapers. And maybe it will do something "controversial" that will get it banned in North Korea etc. The horror. Oh and I'll get BF3, too.

    So fuck yeah, I'm in.

...about whether games are art...at least according to the US National Endowment of the Arts which basically says "yes, games are art."

FY 2012 ARTS IN MEDIA GUIDELINES

The Arts in Media category seeks to make the excellence and diversity of the arts widely available to the American public through the national distribution of innovative media projects about the arts and media projects that can be considered works of art.

    ...

    ...

The Arts in Media builds on the success of The Arts on Radio and Television. All project types that were previously eligible remain eligible. In addition, the expanded category now includes:

All available media platforms such as the Internet, interactive and mobile technologies, digital games, arts content delivered via satellite, as well as on radio and television.

Media projects that can be considered works of art.

Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of innovative media projects about the arts (e.g., visual arts, music, dance, literature, design, theater, musical theater, opera, folk & traditional arts, and media arts including film, audio, animation, and digital art) and media projects that can be considered works of art.

Projects may include high profile multi-part or single television and radio programs (documentaries and dramatic narratives); media created for theatrical release; performance programs; artistic segments for use within an existing series; multi-part webisodes; installations; and interactive games. Short films, five minutes and under, will be considered in packages of three or more.

Grants generally will range from $10,000 to $200,000, based on the platform and the complexity and scope of the project.

The application deadline date is September 1, 2011, for projects that may start on May 1, 2012, or any time thereafter.

Hi Composite! I have faith in ye for some olde tyme MP map goodness.

But anyway, as much as IW has been through the past 18 months and the amount of grief Activision gets, I'm pretty sure I'll still play MW3 unless it looks absolutely crap at E3 or something. But I just don't see that happening. I have to admit that I'm excited for an IW treatment of urban combat in modern NYC, London, Paris etc. Yes it's not the same IW as before and a lot of the former leads left for Respawn, but there are many talented people at IW so I'm not going to count them out without seeing what they produce. If MW3 looks at all good I'll still get it and enjoy it....and even if BF3 rocks i'm still going to play MW3. Somehow I ended up enjoying Homefront for all its serious, serious faults. How could I not be interested in MW3 then?

Well I never heard of Modern Warfare 1 or 2, but apparently Kotaku claims it's some big brand and that Modern Warfare 3 is coming out Nov 8 of this year.

Giving it free to pre-orders but making everyone else buy it later would be fine if the maps were all new...but 100% rehashes? That really is uncool. I have to assume that was a marketing decision and not a DICE decision. [Blocked Image: https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/public/style_emoticons/default/mapcore_smilies/emot_shakehead.gif]

I think the later parts of Portal 2 captures some of the spirit of the original Half-Life, given how both games have the

going which I think is very effective.) The use of 3D space is brilliant, something Valve singleplayer content is known for. Anyway, the sound design + level design = awesome. After playing Portal 2, the idea of just navigating through a path as essentially the main gameplay mechanic without having to defeat monsters like in a standard shooter game is becoming very appealing, given how the Portal games have done it. Yes, you still "shoot" the portal gun and you do get to

PlayStation Network remains down, although a phased rollout of services should begin this week at some point. In the meantime, Sony's Kaz Hirai has just responded to the U.S. House of Representatives. Although Sony did not appear in person, the entire letter is viewable here. The PlayStation blog has outlined the response, and perhaps the most interesting tidbit is that "the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named 'Anonymous' with the words 'We are Legion'."

The "We are Legion" phrase is part of the slogan hacking group Anonymous uses and it was featured on its major threat to Sony originally. The fact that this file was planted on Sony's server is not proof positive that Anonymous did it. In fact, Anonymous went out of its way to say that it had nothing to do with the attack, while calling Sony "incompetent."

At this point, we simply do not know what the truth is. If Anonymous is not lying, then someone is clearly trying to scapegoat them. On the other hand, it's possible that Anonymous is scared of the legal hammer to come down on them if they blatantly proclaim, "Yes we did it!"

For the record, in the letter Kaz Hirai sent, the answer to the question, "Have you identified the individual(s) responsible for the breach?" is simply "No."

So if one uses prepaid PSN card such as what you can buy at Best Buy or other retailers you'd be 100% in the clear of at least your credit card info being at risk...assuming you otherwise never input a CCN into PSN?

  • FIFA vs. PES

I played (and still do from time to time) alot of FIFA and PES games, and I always thought PES was so much better than fifa, but somewhere at PES9-10 they totally fucked up more and more, and I havent been playing for a while, but I picked up both PES11 and FIFA 11 quite recently, and to be honest its a bit hardto decide on them.PES11 looks much better and has a much more TV-ish feel to it, while FIFA is a bit more down to the basics, and is a bit easier and better to play.

PES is animation driven to such an extend that sometimes a pass or shot can be delayed up to a second at worst. Wich if you dont appreciate that kind of "realism" to it can be quite annoying. while fifa is a bit more easy to get started, easy to learn, and still acctually has a ok "Be a pro" -mode.

    its late im tired,but basically:

    fifa - arcade

    pes - simulation

That's the vibe I'm getting. FIFA 11 is supposed to have "2 button control" to essentially make it more arcade and newb friendly. That's optional right? And then FIFA 11 has a "Pro Passing" option as well, right? It sounds intended to be similar to PES 11's "Total Control" thing Konami talks about where the passing accuracy depends on how the skilled the player is with the controller. As I understand, PES 11's "Total Control" is always on right?

In other words, in PES 11 it's essentially always sim style whereas FIFA's default mode is more arcade, with an option to be even more arcade and yet another option to be more sim.

If that's the case, I'm thinking my niece and brother-in-law might have more fun with FIFA 11? I assume the demos for this on 360 have all control modes available? I'd test it out on my PS3 but no PSN...

Ok...my ten year old niece loves playing Soccer (yes...i mean "Football") and she has an Xbox 360. It seems many of her school and soccer friends (both boys and girls) actually play FIFA or PES. I didn't think younger kids were into Soccer sims but shows you what I know. And her dad is really interested in it, too. He is pretty good at Madden so he's familiar with sport sim games in general though he's a bit of a Soccer newb.

They asked me if they should buy FIFA or PES. Suggestions?

FYI the internal Sony PR brass are all over this one sending that message personally to everyone from industry analysts, investment analysts, 3rd party publisher executives...anyone the Sony PR group has a personal relationship with that works in, on or around the industry. So it seems like it's all hands on deck.

    Quote from PSN

We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We're working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

    ---

    Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

    1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

    2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

    3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit http://www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

Big difference between DDOS'ing a website, which would be analogous to blocking the doors of a business, and hacking it, which would be breaking in. They'd actually need to hack PSN to get access to anything like credit card details, and if their goal was profit like that they wouldn't bother with the DDOS. These are two separate tactics with two separate goals.

A new kind of internet hacker?

Not that a week's worth of lost PSN content sales will sink Sony, every day it's down just burns them a little more. Perhaps Microsoft will come out with a new campaign trashing them for it...which would invite hackers to work harder at bringing them down.

In any event the consumer is the biggest loser in this case. Damn you, hackers!
