I created this thread yesterday and people are already talking about locking and leaving the thread - I think most of us have been around here for long enough to know that this would head into this direction. I'm glad the discussion is somewhat turning into a more moderate discussion "on topic" though, just one last thing about this "Americans are arch-conservative deeply religious racist rednecks" controversy:

I think some of the generalizations made about Americans on the previous pages are quite ludicrous, yet I believe the Europeans are not the only ones exaggerating. The truth is somewhere in between. What I don't understand is how this has anything to do with the ongoing election! Barack Obama (the black dude) is leading in any poll, doesn't that mean that Americans want a change in their government's politics? Shouldn't we congratulate them to a more liberal, open minded government? I have the feeling many Europeans' faith in America is still shattered by George W.'s re-election 4 years ago. The election isn't over yet, the Republican candidate still has the chance to win this, it happened before, but we can be optimistic...Special thanks to Twiz by the way, for giving such a detailed insight on your personal view and on the happenings in the states these days. Let me tell you from a European outside perspective, that your concerns (or Chunk's rather) about socialism are not necessary. One part of Germany used that system for about 40 years and it's nothing like what Obama has in mind! This sounds like Republican propaganda to be honest. You raise taxes for millionaires and you are a commie

Almost a little too late to post this, but it's every 4 years that we get to talk about it, so I wouldn't want to miss that opportunity. Even though us Europeans won't have a say in the matter, I'd like to hear any opinion, but especially of course those from the Americorians!

    Go Obama!

I watched the Gamespot review today and will read a few more. I'm definitely interested, but I finally borrowed Mass Effect from a friend and I wanna dig deeper into this first. I don't have anything against consoles but what I noticed is that you need a huge TV (which I don't have) to play comfortably when you sit on your couch. So i usually end up buying the PC version if there is one

True wisdom! Your idea might have been all so clever in your head but when the player doesn't get it or dislikes it, the idea is maybe not as much worth as you thought it was.

I still see it as a place where i have a lot of friends and where i can talk about things a bit more open.

If "open" means honest, then this is something which we should support here, if it means cynicism, jump to the gun conclusions and calling people names, then I think this is something undesirable. I'm not putting this into context with all of your posts or your posts only, mind you, I just think this is what Taylor and Furyo were indicating and something that caught attention in other recent threads as well.

Excuse me??? Who is he to critize Deus Ex 1? How dare he? Seriously, Kleinluka - why do you hate PC games???

The gold star for best, free promotion goes out to Edge magazine today, here is why:

    Quote

In an interview with Edge magazine, published tomorrow, Dugas says the original Deus Ex was “kind of slow”. He added, “There weren’t enough exciting, memorable moments. It was aimed more towards a simulation rather than a game experience.”(...)

Full interview and exclusive screens in the new issue of Edge, on sale October 23 in the UK, and within a week or so in North America and Continental Europe.

It's the oldest journalist trick ever, you do an interview, take a sentence out of context for usage as an eye catching headline and boost your sales. Add enraged fanboys spreading the word/link to the headline on the web, of course with the note attached that the magazine is going to be released (surprise!) tomorrow.

    You have been tooled guys!

Original Story: According to a seven page thread on the 2K Sports forums, the company forgot something important when it shipped the PC version of NBA 2K9 (also, PS3, X360) to stores: there is no CD key to be found anywhere in the box.

Shame for 2K, but let me be the first one to say: EPIC FAIL!

Luckily customers are getting rescued by a knight in shiny, white armour known as "Sir Valve":

    Quote

Update: Valve let us know that Steam now takes care of this issue: "Owners of the retail version of NBA 2K9 for the PC may now install their games without the CD key, provided the disc is in the drive. And those considering a purchase of NBA 2K9 may do so without concern of installation issues related to the lack of a CD key.

Games this captivating do not come along often. Between its engrossing story, ginormous world, well-crafted RPG side, and white-knuckle FPS combat, Fallout 3 completely, utterly gives you your $60 worth. [Dec 2008, p.52]

I lol'd. How cna a game get 100/100?! There is no game in the world that deserves that kind of rating. Retarded magazine I see.

PS: On subject of gameplay - here is faith they'll get that right too!

no. it's just that when there's a chance muslims will be offended, you have to calculate the very potential risk. it's sad, but it's true. you haven't forgotten the comic issue, right?

I see what's offensive with creating new and offensive material, but I don't get what's offensive by using material that is already created and "approved".

Ok, LBP might not be the best game to add religious songs, but hey.

From the BBC article linked in the first post:

    Quote

Manzoor Moghal, of the Muslim Forum think-tank, explained that words from the Koran should not be set to music because the words are seen to have come directly from God.He added: "We must compliment Sony for taking decisive action by withdrawing these games immediately, and releasing a version that is not offensive to Muslims."

So it isn't an issue related exclusively to videogames in the first place.

    Quote from Erratic

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Unfortunately muslims don't speak with a single voice, so you get all kinds of different feedback from such events from the muslim community, depending on how conservative the person is and how he interpretes the Koran.
