Finally saw it last night. I had high expectations after reading some of the comments here and quotes from critics, it was GOOD but I can't quite share the enthusiasm by the folks on that avatar board (sheesh lol that is a gold mine for psychologists). I didn't really connect with any of the characters

    Quote

for example when the Na'avi tied up Jake and ignored his warnings I actually started to root for the mercenaries. Call me apathatic but boy that made them look stupid, especially after their tree burnt down.

But I can see why others, especially younger audiences really click with the universe and the messages. I think the technology really helped in this case, the characters looked amazingly real. Speaking of which, does anybody have a good ressource with information on how they did it? On the mocap process and in particular the facial animations? The environments looked great too and it was also the first time I've watched a full-length movie in 3D. I've spent money on watching worse movies for sure!

Brushing up my CD classics collection for the car and bought a book that hopefully won't mess with my brain too much.

Everybody watch the presentation video, the screens don't do it justice, there is a whole lot more going on in the map!

The concept of a bombs trigger and a safety room is indeed nothing new ("crossfire" ) but the energy cells, the additional stuff you can do with them and the things you added to guide new players makes it stand out. Looks like you've put a lot of thought and effort into the map, good job!

Yeah, I'm nowhere near as good as the people working there right now, it's going to be a great learning experience I hope .

I know it's a big place but say hi from me if you see an Australian drunkard ("Craig Tiller") or a German software engineer ("Marco Koegler").

I strongly believe that watching this play out automatically wouldn't have the same effect. By making the player themselves decide to rebel against the monotony of the daily routine the game becomes a far more personal experience than you could have as a spectator in a movie of the same events. I can see why some people wouldn't enjoy the game, as if you approach it looking for a gameplay experience you're pretty much destined to leave disappointed. I personally like seeing projects like this, however, for showing the potential of games as a truly unique way of presenting a story.

Agreed. Two additions from my side: First, an important factor is perspective. If you connect with the message (share the same idea, maybe it is something that is currently very relevant to you) then you will get ten times more enjoyment out of this than when you've got no reason to relate. Secondly, I don't understand the people who say this can't be a game because there is no challenge. Understanding the concept how to progress, finding the different actions is a challenge. Maybe not the hardest one you've come across in a game, also maybe not the most fun type of gameplay, yet there is a challenge. Adventure games anyone?? Those are more complex most of the time (remember that this game had to be developed within a week) but the basic gameplay is not too different.

I find it interesting that so many of you mentioned the music. I also like it a lot!

my point is that immersion is measurable and attainable by forcing a player's involvement in a game, whereas "fun" isn't. they're two different dimensions.

    That's deep bro...

Have you read "A theory of fun" by Raph Koster? I'm sure you'd get a kick out of it! Seriously though, no design team on earth would waste a minute of production time in a meeting discussing these things, nor is it going to help the OP find a good book about level-design...

i also love how people comment on narrative in depth elements without first knowing the theory behind those elements. i got kinda bored through the first part, haven't watched any of the others yet. apart from the slapstick humor in his verbal dyslexia, what more is there to this?EDIT: cross that. the self parody in the second part is a subtle social commentary on ignorant people attempting to review things without the slighest insight into their fields.

    You've got one try left.
