  • Vanguard/Sigil Interview

Interesting read and I feel sorry for the guy and his co workers, but there is worse. Games getting canned and people being laid off for good, as opposed to a game that was at least finished (or let's better say "released" ) and a studio including its employees being picked up by a bigger company.

Although the whole development sounded like an ordeal, this is just one, personal take on it, so I guess you should take it with a grain of salt.

Imagine a WoW mobile version! You could play WoW even when you are not at home!

    That would be....terrible.

The same is true of the enemies who are fighting you: by the end of the game it's a case of ordnance-spam attrition. Can you pump out more grenades and rockets in the first few moments of the fight than your enemy? Good, then you'll reach the next checkpoint. It's boring. Halo 2's fighting is soulless and tiresomely predictable. It's boring like tidying your house is boring. Pick up some shoes, wash the dishes, bazooka the conveyor-belt of linear monsters. Halo 2 has no puzzles that I can recall, no notable physics events, a handful of interesting scripted scenes, and no memorable emergent glories at all. It is repetitious shooting that leaves us feeling, at best, sad and unfulfilled.

    The score - 66%

How about using no content at all? Or no textures at least. Just have geometry of flat solid colors. Thats forces you to think about lighting, brushwork, architecture, the actual space etc, also gameplay and layout. could yield interesting results. Most modern architecture today uses little texture in their materials.examples:

It will stretch the imagination more and you probably get the most original source engine maps.

    just a thought...

1st and 4th image (not sure about 2nd one) look very much like the Mercedes Benz museum in Stuttgart, which is awesome

When I was there I thought it would be so awesome to take a day and capture the whole thing on camera, take pictures for textures and rebuild the whole thing (or at least parts of it because it is pretty damn big).

That's a too big project for a contest though I guess

(although making levels under usage of certain architectural styles could be cool...)

Sorry but this is wrong. Just because it has a huge player base doesn't mean it's a good game. Again, look at halo.

But don't you see that this is subjective? I also don't understand why people like Halo so much, I personally don't enjoy the game, but when you look at it from a neutral perspective you see great reviews across the board and millions of sold units. "What IS a good game" ?

Anyway I think we are beating a dead horse

The vast majority of people play World of Warcraft for the social networking aspect of it, an incredibly powerful force, and not the gameplay at all. This is kind of obvious when you think about it because not only is the gameplay dull, but it's also monotonous, uninspired, mundane and wholly fails to engage the play in any kind of meaningful action. It is the size and variety of the game world that makes the social aspect so appealing and alluring, and not so much the artistic direction, epic world, etc. Games like Second Life have proven that being even remotely visually appealing is not a requirement as long as the size and variety is there.

If Blizzard can harness these same ingredients in its next game, it doesn't really matter what the game is as long as the theme sounds appealing to a lot of people. It's then guaranteed to be a success.

Let nobody argue with my opinion for it is correct in every single way.

haha wow you really like to hear yourself talk right Thrik? I thought you had your blog for that

I played 2 characters in WoW, leveled up to 22 and 23, so by no means high enough to fully judge the game, but I figured I rather spend my little free time on other games than such a time consuming one. I'm kinda puzzled about statements from people who say they level up to above 20 in 2 nights, it took me 2 weeks for the first char and like 3-4 weeks for the other one. I guess I'm just slow

If I was still in school I would probably be all over it though, although the setting isn't really my thing. I can see why some gamers hate it for distracting people from other games and for sucking up lifes like no other game out there, but simply for that you have to admit that Blizzard did everything right and hit the big jackpot. They keep spitting out bestseller games and I respect them for that

Aye, true that. My project is way too early for that, though.. it's always kind of odd when the final result on page xx of the thread doesn't bear any similarity with the opening post .

Now that the basic lighting and style is adequate, I'll just work on it until I've got enough material for an own thread.

    Cheers!

This is what the WIP Level Gallery section of the forum is really about though - posting "Work in progress" shots of your level. It isn't meant to be a work showcase, that is what "finished work" is for

Since you are posting in this thread (which is in the WIP level gallery section) you and the others aren't doing anything wrong per sé, but this thread was meant to be for stuff that offers only very little to show or is very early in development. By posting all your stuff in here the rest of the forum falls short, work falls through the cracks and you will probably not receive as much feedback as when posting an own thread.

In the end it's still up to you though when you think you got enough material to show in an independent thread. I'm just trying to motivate people to open more own threads around here, don't be shy guys

A lot of this stuff is worth posting in its own, seperate thread - so why not giving your work the attention it deserves instead of cluttering up this one?

(goes to everyone posting pics of cool maps in the previous 2-3 pages)
