    Jack Johnson is definitely not for me, I'm more thinking Pennywise, Offspring, Millencollin...punk rock, pop punk or however you want to define that. Fast and e-guitar basically.

    I know I will spend many months stripping chords, until I can play something slightly recognizable, but if even the perfect result wouldn't satisfy me, there is no point for me in trying, so I would like to go for e-guitar, not acoustic.

    Grin: The microcube - I guess it doesn't get any smaller than that

    It sounds good for you? Maybe I should try it, but I'm thinking spending a few more bucks on something bigger might not hurt either..

    Hey, I think about learning how to play the guitar (guitar hero doesn't do it for me anymore..), preferably an e-guitar (rawr).

    There must be some people around here, who could give me some advise on good beginner guitars and what amp should go with it.

    I know there are 2 different kind of e-guitar styles (fender and les paul) and that I should probably get a guitar that incorporates both styles and can switch inbetween (even if not perfect, but good enough for a beginner, ibanez or yamaha for example).

    How much watt would you think is appropriate for a beginner/practise amp? Do built in effects on the amp pay off, so I don't need to buy pedals later on (again, just for practise)?

    As far as my music style goes - once I've banged on it for a while, I dream of playing punk rock songs some day

    Any kind of advise and bits of information for a beginner is appreciated, thanks!

    My dad was diagnosed with thyroids cancer when I was a toddler. The doctors told him and my mom he would have 2 years left to live and that they should be glad about that. He kept fighting and won. The next 8 years the cancer came back 2 more times, but he never thought about giving up. For the past ~10 years he has been a healthy man.

    It was a tough time for my whole family and I wish yours and especially your mom the best. If it helps you - the chances to cure breast cancer are pretty good nowadays and I heard the older the woman is, the less the cancer grows.

    What everyone else said - amazing thread - I think we've had one of those before looooong time ago, anyway, another one was way overdue and I just read through it in one sitting.

    Really interesting to hear the stories behind the nicknames, sad sometimes (D3 I'm sending a PM your way, we'll get you back in shape, trust me ) but also funny (Hessi :"My advice: shit on the girl, focus on university." - classic! ). I love some of the details too and demonstratively give Tay a wink

    I think most people have seen the thread in GID, so I won't bore you with more details about my life, but the mentioning of this "quarter life crisis" struck me too. I didn't even know something like this existed, but believe that it's something everybody needs to go through, maybe for most people on a smaller scale.

    For each person comes the day, when you need to get off the rails your parents put you on and find your own way. For some of us this happens when you drop out of school at an age of 16 and for others it happens during the mid-, late-twenties when graduating from university. Or when you think "hey, maybe this isn't exactly what I want to do from now on and for the rest of my life", "maybe there is more out there", but that also bares the risk of always thinking that there is something or somebody better to find.

    I've been going through something like this the past 6-12 months, where I needed to re-prioritize certain fundamental aspects of my lifestyle in terms of personal value: work, money, free time. What's more or most important? I don't know! But I think I made a good decision to unlock myself some more options, for the times when I think that certain aspects need more dedication than others, so I can shift priorities.

    I still find myself torn between yuppi friends and a liberal way of thinking though and still don't exactly know what I want to be in 10-15 years. Talking to your parents has proven to be quite helpful to me, they have been through this themselves before after all and one thing I learnt from them is that you can't plan or foresee everything. Don't be careless but do what makes you happy and what seems like the best choice for you. Everything else will come when it's time

    Economics is certainly one element of the studies, but not everything. It basically covers everything you might need if you work in a media related business. That could be a newspaper/magazine, a publisher, TV or radio station...So I also get to improve my language skills, I can focus on project managment or marketing later on. Everything's also meant to be more practical and not as theoretical as traditional economics at regular universities, which I find appealing.

    But it doesn't have anything to do with design, neither game or graphics related. I see these studies as an opportunity to widen my horizon and gain myself more options as to what I will end up doing the rest of my life (probably), instead of digging further in just one field.

  • The Ship sequel announced

    Ah there you go, I saw it on Shacknews yesterday but forgot to post it here...I played the ship, it didn't keep me playing longer than for a month, but it definitaley filled some lunch breaks and early ervening hours. Was good fun and had a completely different edge to mp fps, can't wait to see what the sequel will have in stores!

    The university is a "university of applied sciences" and the studies actually consist of "trimesters" (instead of "semesters", although there are only 2 times a year you can join class, anyway...), so I won't have those 3 months summer vacations and whatnot, but the good thing is that it won't take forever. It will still be 3 years for a bachelor degree, but that also includes half a year internship in a company. If I want to go for a masters, I would need to chip in 2 additional years...I'll see once I got my BD if that is something I want to pursue

  • Time to move on..

    I just wanted to drop a note here (instead of telling everyone individually), that I'm not longer working for Crytek, since last Friday. I will begin my studies (media economics) on October 1st, read on for details

    I've always wanted to go to university some day, but I just wasn't sure when. Half a year ago I made the decision, to spend another half a year working on Crysis, to hopefully finish it and begin studies with the start of the winter semester, because I know if I don't do it then - I never will.

    Well, now it's September, Crysis isn't finished yet and the start of the winter semester is looming around the corner. Then again, I think it's safe to say, that it's pretty damn close. It's a shame that I can't pop the corks with the rest of the team once the game goes gold, but I'm confident they're able to squish the last bugs on their own and I will come visiting for the release party.

    It's been 3 amazing years, both in Coburg and Frankfurt and when I think about it now, I feel like time flew, but in fact, the experiences I made, the places I've been to, the people I have met, are quite tremendous and I believe I could contribute to a pretty fun game.

    So, anyway, I moved back to Bielefeld (my home area) on Friday, put all my stuff into my parent's place and will stay here for now (live with mom and dad again yay!), until my best friend and me found a decent place in the city that is

    Meanwhile I will do my best to move as little as possible and get constantly drunk, until I have to hit the books again at the beginning of October and probably kick myself in the nuts for doing so if I could have been working on videogames instead.

    By any means, this doesn't mean that I am done with games though. Beside annoying you kids here at the core, I probably won't be able to stay from the editor for too long...oh, and we'll see where it takes me once I'm finished with uni
