Randy Pitchford: One thing that's cool is some of the people we've been able to work with to help us [on Aliens]. The guys that write the Battlestar Galactica series, Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, they wrote our script. They're amazing guys. They gave us a lot, too. We could make a whole season of TV with the stuff they gave us. [laughs] We profited from the writer's strike, let's just put it that way. We talked with a lot of people, but those guys are so good. And then a lot of the concept guys that helped make the movies. Like [Aliens concept artist] Syd Mead, that guy walks on water. And to be able to go to his studio, his house, and then have him draw a bunch of stuff. "Here's when I designed the Sulaco back when we made the first movie. Here's the original artwork. You want a copy, Brian?" And Brian's like, "Yes."

And now he's designing all the new stuff, because the Sulaco's a big ship and we only saw a bit of it, so you get the guy who designed it to design the rest of it. And he's awesome, he designed so much stuff. And then like [concept artists] Keith Thompson, Craig Mullins.. anybody who knows these names knows what we're talking about. This is no joke.

It's a big team. And we're also working with people from all over the world. We've been working with a lot of amazing talent at other studios. I don't know how much of that will be used in PR, but there's a lot of people who care about this franchise. The opportunity to build a dropship, or build a pulse rifle, or build a smart gun, that's a pretty cool opportunity--a lot of artists would want to do that. So we have our core Gearbox team, but we're also finding a lot of folks around the industry now, guys who are on top of their game.

I hope all these great writers and artists help to make a truely better game. I surely feel excited

If you want to be really original you could get him some kind of statue or figurine of something. Or maybe some sharks teeth, the big bone and teeth structure of their mouth. I've got a massive one in my room, sharp as hell.

Not sure about the shark teeth, but a figurine might not be such a bad idea...thanks!

It was no easy decission to make as I have really enjoyed being at IOI and learnt incredible much there. In the few years I have been at IO I have been so lucky to be involved in three different projects, each of them cooler than the other.I do however believe that the time is right for me to study further. If I don't do this now I am afraid that I never will and then regret that in 5-10 years. I always knew that I wanted some further education, I just have never been a 100% sure of when to do it or what to study.

This paragraph could have come from me one year ago! Excactly my mindset, my studies are slightly different but I know how you feel! I wish you the best Michael, I hope you'll stick around here though!

Sentura: Haha I first thought you got him the ice cream machine on the left "OMG AWESOME!!!!11", but the shirt is cool too! I figured a T-Shirt is a must actually for this kind of trip. Since he is running a website publishing company, I'm trying to something related to that (Internet? Serious business!)...

Acumen: Yea I know that site, he and some other friends actually got me something from that company for my birthday - a flight with a para glider, I still need to do this

Pogo: I've seen one of those before, might be an option...but beside training your hand/arm muscles, they aren't that much 'fun' are they?

HP: Ahh a lava lamp, yea that's a classic but I think he already got plus a few more fancy lights

    Keep'em coming boys!

PS: He lives in a flat share with another person, I faintly remember an automatic nerf gun turret from thinkgeek, maybe that would be cool! I'll search for it later...

Ohh didn't know they were making another one! No surprise, the Terminator series hasn't even arrived in Germany yet...

Not sure if I like that Christian Bale is playing John Connor. He is already Bruce Wayne, why can't he share?

Ok, my best buddy's birthday is coming up and he flies us and another mate out to a certain Balearic island for a weekend of sun, chicas, muchas cervezas and not so much sleep...I'm stoked, as it's most probably gonna be lots of fun but this obviously also means that he's going to get a little bigger birthday present as usual, considering he pays for everything. The real problem though is to find something, as you might have guessed he is not exactly what one would consider poor, so the present should be original more than anything else.

The "What have you recently purchased?" thread brought me to this and here is where I need your help guys. Instead of browsing around by myself, I ask you "what cool items/gadgets/products have you come across recently?"! I'm not specifically looking for just "one item", it could be multiple things!

Here are some of his interests from the top of my head: Big Super Mario fan, consoles (NES, N64,Wii, Xbox - Generally I would prefer NOT to give him a video game though, unless you have a real insider tip), fast cars, GADGETS, got himself an ipod recently, motorboats, movies...basically anything from "thinkgeek" gadgets, across funny DVDs, games, or actually clever, useful items go.

Basically post whatever comes to your mind but please be constructive, also please try to stay below 100-150 €!

If you help me you can be my best mapcore mate, now that's an incentive isn't it?

Not to derail the thread on the game I'm working on (I figure it's another Gearbox project so it's ok), but here's Mikey (of zilla fame) and Col. Antal showing one of the levels for GameSpot that demonstrates exactly how your old concerns were addressed: http://www.gamespot.com/video/930277/61 ... -show-demo You'll be pretty accurate and the squads are pretty effective too (as you'll notice in the video).

Heh cool to see/hear Mike - sorry "Mikey" - in the video, nice footage of the game too!

Even though Borderlands hasn't won my heart just yet, I must say it's quite impressive you got 3 (announced) AAA titles in the works at Gearbox at the same time: Borderlands, BiA AND Aliens.

Here we go, E3 walkthrough with Randy P:

I like the idea of procedurally generated weapons, but apart from that not much new here?! It appears like a cross-over of Mass Effect and Halo to me. Visually I'm not sold yet either.

  • Duke! The most weird trailer, ever?!

    • July 17, 2008 at 5:20 PM

Here is an article that might answer some of your questions (duke nukem - chain reaction wtf? what are these titles? apogee???):

    http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=932

The trailer begs a different question though: How long can a company take credit for accomplishments from long time ago, by milking the same franchise without bringing it substantially forward?

    Quote

Apart from a brief logo-filled teaser, Apogee has yet to provide any media from Duke Nukem Trilogy. According to Nagy, our first glimpse of the game isn't likely to be until October, which he hopes will signal the arrival of a "really good trailer."

Answer: In the case of 3D Realsm/Apogee - for very long!
