Damn dudes, some heavy stuff in this thread. It sadly doesn’t surprise me that a lot of game dev folks might suffer from depression. I honestly know too little about it to be bold enough and make any kind of suggestion as to what could help, but it really doesn’t sound like something that’s wise to push to the side. Whether it’s trying to deal with it by improving your conditions or getting professional help then that’s got to be better than just neglecting it entirely. Also this is yet another reminder of something that’s generally a tricky thing about the internet, it’s often hard to know if somebody is just goofing around as their internet persona or whether they’re being plagued by some actual problems.

Hmm, anyway, I’m kinda in a weird spot in my life right now, where for the first time in years my social life is actually pretty good and my professional life seems perhaps less good, pretty much a complete reversal of what it used to be like for the last couple of years. I’ve been at a new job for the last 3 months, which I took primarily to get out of my comfort zone (which has been level designing for the last 10 years) and try something more game design oriented…well, that and it’s the best paying job I’ve ever had.

Though I’ve definitely learned a lot of different stuff already, and it does feel quite good to try something very different, then I really miss designing levels and can feel that it’s something that won’t just go away. Thinking about doing a CS:GO map to vent that urge, plus I applied for a gig in the US recently, which sadly looks like it won’t be happening this time.

Been trying to stay at it with doing my own game too, but I’ve definitely taken a larger bite than I can chew, trying and going for doing a procedurally generated game, which probably isn’t the best idea when you’re an absolute programming novice . To that end then I’ve been talking to a couple of really good coder friends about teaming up doing a smaller game together, which is something that’s really motivating me a lot lately.

Apart from that then I’m trying to play fewer games (or be more selective at least), watch less TV series and movies since it feels like I’m wasting my life away on too much of that stuff, and in general it’s been a long time since I’ve spent as much time with friends IRL as I’ve done lately. Though I haven’t really gotten a girlfriend yet, then I’ve been going out a lot more often the last couple of months and had a few one night stands, which has given me more confidence in that area (which is great, because there was nearly none before )

Oh and last weekend I became an uncle, with my brother’s girlfriend giving birth to a little baby girl

Anyway, weird times.

If it's the same old stuff with them playing it ultra safe I'd rather just go back to TitanFall, that scratches that type of MP itch better than the last couple of CODs IMO.

Supposedly it's the first COD in ages to have had a 3 year dev cycle, but if it's the exact same gameplay again with minor additions (which is what a lot of people want but also whats been pushing me away) then I doubt that I'll bite. Then again, I've also played every COD game up until Ghosts, so my franchise fatigue is strong

BTW, I love my Core shirts (I'm wearing one of them right now!), donno if this has already been mentioned earlier in the thread, but I have 2 suggestions for some potential future changes:

1. Might just be that I'm being hyper OCD about this, but having the "game development community" text aligned to the left with a small empty space to the right has annoyed me for a while. Would look so much better if it was centred/spread out/slightly larger font so that it went all the way to the right IMO.

2. Make the red t-shirts have the white logo on them instead.

Hah! Just watched the latest episode twice back-to-back, can't get enough of this shit~~once again it makes me wish that I had the willpower to withhold from viewing any of the new episodes until the entire season had aired.

Already a bunch of good ones mentioned here (Cut the Rope, Ridiculous Fishing, Threes/2048)

Other good ones are Drop7, Organ Trail, Game Dev Story, Dead Ahead, Monsters, mostly because they're good for short sessions but can be played for hours if you really want to (especially Drop7, be-fuckin-ware of that one).

Also Hero Academy is amazing if you can find some friends to play with, played that for over a year every day at one point.

Year Walk (the first Simogo game) is also great, but I'd rather play that on a tablet than a smartphone.

I know a bunch of the guys that worked on this (and used to work on it) and they went through a lot of shit to get here, moved their families over there from Denmark and had some trouble with getting their first game off the ground, so it's fantastic news that this turned out well.

Haven't tried it yet, looks beautiful but a bit limited gameplay wise from the videos I've seen. I hope there's a little bit of freedom in the solutions rather than just have a single correct one, but I'll give it a spin later today (if I can put down FTL on iPad D:)

Honestly, if they go further in this direction I'd actually get more interested in COD than I am now. Just make it a parody of itself, more than it already it is.

I'm generally a sucker for Indian Pale Ales like Sierra Nevada and Brew Dog when I want a beer just for the taste, and your standard pilsners like Urquell when it goes with food.

But yeah, I really can't work while listening to people talking, which is super annoying when you've got lots of podcasts you wanna listen to, don't really mind lyrics since those are easier to tune out. Then again it also depends on whether it's creative work where you have to have to concentrate a bit or if it's just technical repetitious work where you can turn your brain off a bit, I find it easier to listen to podcasts with the latter.

I usually listen to stuff on Spotify, where I find stuff I like and then keep listening the same song so much that I end up hating it
