  • So these days what is a level designers responsibility?

Like its already been mentioned, it varies from company to company. But overall it does seem like industry as whole has become a lot more focused and specialized, with good reason, though like you said indie devs obviously have more overlap than larger devs.

At Io it's changed a great deal since I was hired, back then Level Designers and Environment Artists were basically the same. These days it's definitely become much more specialized in the design side of things. An example is on the project I'm working on now, all Level Designers are very engaged in all aspects of the game's design, and though in the end our jobs are to design, mock up, script levels and kinda act as a producer for the level, then we also got the larger responsibility of actually making sure that mechanics and the overall direction is on track. It's not that its that new at the studio from my perspective, but these days it's much more underlined as a part of our jobs. I'm sure there's plenty other studios that does it differently, but it shouldn't surprise anyone that larger studios are probably gonna get a lot more specialized in the next couple of years.

So I figure it's not cool to be sarcastically positive about it anymore?

Anyway, it's exactly what I've expected, and yet I bet I'll still end up playing it.

Playing LittleBigPlanet 2, really liking it. It feels like they've taken out a page of Super Mario Galaxy's book of adding a new cool mechanic in each new world. It's maybe not as drastic in the gameplay change it provides, but so far each new world just feels fresh and exciting and makes you wonder what's next. Definitely shows that Media Monocule is only second to Nintendo when it comes to creating amazing platformers.

My eyes might be broken, but I can't see where it says that you get it for free on the PS3 if you buy it on PC, only the other way around.

Plus somewhat embarrassing that this isn't happening on the 360 either.

I'm actually a lot more excited about it now, I think the idea of it being tied to Alien was pretty risky, and I'd much rather see new sci-fi from him than prequels or sequels.

Haha Lost Eden was great, so much atmosphere in it. Probably wont hold up very well if you play it today, but back in the multimedia CD ages it was pretty sweet.

just finished the bad company 2 campaign ! id say its on par but doesn't surpass the most recent call of duty outings.+great gun feel especially the sounds !

    +destructible buildings \o/

+vehicle sequences are not all completely prescripted and lame !

    +great humor

+its not always on "11" like call of duty is ! those 11 moments have to be build up to and earned !

-too many large fog sand /snow storm sprites in my face at all times !

-plot breaks down in the end

-ugly tree alpha dither artifacts seriously what is that shit ? the engine can definitely handle normal alpha masks why not use that everywhere ?!

I assume that you've played the multiplayer as well, that's where it really shines (best online shooter around in my opinion). The singleplayer was decent, a step up from the campaign in the first one, but in no way the reason you play this game.

Walking around the freezer rooms I didn't know if I'd gotten lost, it was trying to do some clever hallucination thing, or they had copied and pasted the same room 5 times. Still, I liked the original and it looks like more of the same. Pinning babies to the wall and tazing them is harmless fun, after all.

Yeah, had exactly the same reaction, felt like a very weird bit to start a demo with. I liked the demo tho, looking forward to it.
