So I unwrapped it and began skinning - it's taken me longer than I expected, but I don't know what I expected as I haven't tried to skin a player from scratch before:

Screens from Max (quality = poor)

    The map:

All very wip, was laying in the textures mainloy, I doubt anything will remain the same colour or saturation it is now, except poosibly the gloves and the balaclava.

I disagree. That modeling tutorial is bogus because it teaches you to work with NURBS which is not a standard tool most modelers use, especially for low-poly stuff such as this. If you have access to the HLMV, reference their topology. That's how I learned how to do low-poly organics.

It's actually a sub-d tutorial iirc, so the low poly mesh stuff is also applicable

Thats a better done texture and model then i see out of 75% of the models at my college.

Impressed Rick, but the head's definitely the weakest bit. The eyes look too small and bead-like and the bridge of the nose is a bit too thin. Way better than I could do though

ya... the head looks too small. The eyes need work, the arms don't fit in well with the shoulders, his torso looks too boxy. Try to give him some pecks and bring in his gut area a little bit.

But thats pretty impressive for a first humanoid model

Yeah, there's a lot of improvements that need to be made - I'm unsure whther the best thing to do would be to try and fix them on this model, or start again and try to get everything perfect first time around. I assume starting again would give me a better understanding of where I went wrong the first time.

    Thanks for the crits, guys.

Those shoes are pretty nicely done, the rest...eh. Well it's good for a first try but you might want to consider a few things.

    A. Get DeepPaint3D or Bodypaint. They are your best friends for organic texturing.

B.Use photo overlays for cloth, leather, whatever. It bumps the texture up to a greater level.

    C. Reference photos when painting on folds and what not, because right now they're kind of inaccurate. Just observe how certain cloth is affected by gravity at certain points.

If you follow these, you're good to go.

Pretty cool, body looks a little flat and texture could use more detail overall. Keep it up

Yarr! I haven't touched this a few weeks, I got the main base for the textures done and then had to do a load of other things - I don't know whether to finish this or not unless I have a good reason (a mod needs it for example), as the main excercise was in making the model itself. I guess it'd be a nice thing to put in a portfolio (somewhere near the bottom ) so I should finish it sooner rather than later ;D
