Unlocked for me last night, gave it a couple of hours!
Huge fan of HR so I love the little tweaks so far. Graphics (on 'Bone) are a little disappointing but they do have a lot going on. Trying to avoid being spoilery but just in case, quick hits from the first couple of hours:
Spoiler
- the ending of the first mission and then the ending of the "walk n talk" in the railway station seemed like identical beats, plot-wise, both ending in a weird explosion that at first seemed mysterious but I think was just confusingly-implemented. Feels like maybe the Dubai mission was added late on?
- not a fan of the hologram tutorials. Better than watching the videos in HR but the Stealth one just fell flat and I feel like it was bugged maybe?
- on XboxOne at least, the tagged enemy icons and mini-map icons seem to be at noticeably-lower framerate.
- Went for Non-Lethal Long-range, and something about the animation or recoil feels off compared to HR. Was HR Unreal and this is their own engine?
- Wish they'd updated their Battery design. Feels like I'll cheese this one like HR by just relying on the single recharging 'battery'.
- Hacking is still fucking cool and best in class!
Only looks way better now.
- Not sure about the "Division"-style cover yet. Maybe the VATS of Cover for non-twitchy players?
- Apartment looks gorgeous and it was truly a Valve-moment when Jensen said "Blinds" and they opened as I was looking at the right place, etc.
- ...Followed by another Valve moment when the Apt AI said you have voicemail from Sarif and both Jensen and I IRL let out a sigh, lol!
- Love how they wrapped up the Sarif/Megan/Pritchard stuff with the TV (though think I found a bug because I first activated the TV itself, and then when I hit "Turn Off" on the remote it actually started playing the News).
- Prague looks good!
- Ghost so far baby!
-
So I was already disturbed that they're using augs as a stand-in for oppressed minorities when augs are actually really dangerous and vulnerable to hacking that makes them into killing machines, but according to the Feminist Frequency review of the game it's even worse than I expected, because the climax of DXHR killed FIFTY MILLION PEOPLE according to DXMD, just two years before this game's events. LMAO you'd have to be crazy to not be terrified of augs. It's not prejudice if this group KILLED 50 MILLION PEOPLE INVOLUNTARILY JUST TWO YEARS PRIOR. This stupid ass premise implicitly legitimizes racism, wtf were they thinking connecting it to BLM and shit like that? So, so dumb.
...50 Million people! Jesus!
...still gonna play it. But I'm definitely gonna mock this boneheaded stupid ass world building. 50 million people, Christ.

Leave it to FF to analyse only one side of whole picture...
According to the lore, this event was actually triggered by Hugh Darrow, when he invited VIP's to the Panchaea's grand opening, the final level of DX:HR. Darrow's a member of the Illuminati and he takes a anti-augmentations stance, he always wished for it to be severe restrictions on this technology, so he came up with the plan of altering a chip that every aug had on him/her, he views his altered biochip as a way to change the public's attitude on augmentations. And of course, the plan spiraled out of control when so many people died, but hey... it worked.
What I'm basically trying to say here is that it's not that black and white, the writers are not that stupid -- both sides (augs and purists) have different motivations, but in that specific case, the 50 million people genocide was actually caused by an "anti-aug" purist, not the augs per-se, it was not their fault!
You fell right onto the writers trap, this among other things is why this franchise is so god damn good!
PS, some bedtime reading:http://deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

I know all that, dude. I'm talking about how the allusions they draw to connect the augs situation and the real world situation are really poorly thought out and insulting, because real oppressed groups can't be mind controlled into killing 50 MILLION PEOPLE, so there's no justification to be afraid of them and stick them in ghettos.
-
Oppressed groups have always been [mind] controlled, isn't that the text book definition of oppression? Control?
People keep connecting the plot to current events and finding themselves insulted or triggered because they're taking this at face value -- you need only to look at the "Augs lives matter" debacle, which I find kind of funny because DeusEx has always been about political and social subliminal messages, past, current or future. It's a cyberpunk plot, the "punk" part of that word means the domination or oppression of under classes.
The way I see it, is that DeusEx plots have no [political] agenda other than making the player question the world around him, which is what you're doing and it's great and knowing how these games are, there's more to it than it meets the eye.

People are getting "triggered" (remember when that word meant something?) because the references to real world events and groups are ham-fisted.
The "Augs Lives Matter" thing isn't even a decent parallel. Consider that they're comparing the fictional augs that killed 50 million people to a real group that closed a few roads with protests due to real people getting killed by police.
And this isn't the only time they've done that, remember that they also refer to the events of the game as the "mechanical apartheid". It's as if they don't trust the player to understand that they're trying to show that the augs are to represent real oppressed groups. It's like when a political cartoon feels the need to label literally everything.
The use of these references also trivializes the actual things. BLM is protesting shootings that happen almost weekly at this point, the effects of apartheid are still seen today. For a game to come along and say "that's pretty much what's happening to our fictional people with robot limbs" is lame.
I'll have to see where the story has to go, so far it hasn't been positive (in the part I just finished, they actually called the oppression of augs 'racism'...), but from what I've heard, it doesn't even make a point with all of this. I suppose I'll probably say some more about it once I'm done.

Exactly! It's not that we're reading too much into DX's aug situation, it's that they're insultingly trying to generalize it to a bunch of real world issues with references like "Augs Lives Matters" and "Mechanical Apartheid", and in doing so are insulting a bunch of already marginalized people by comparing them to cyborgs who are actually dangerous and superhuman. Eidos Montreal is being way too clumsy when touching on these issues that lead to people getting killed for real, and so they should avoid them if they're not going to invest in consciously getting better at them. Hiring a writer who knows not to compare cyborgs who can turn invisible and shrug off bullets with minorities who are frequently accused of sneaking around to rob people and whom doctors and cops assume have a natural pain tolerance greater than white people would be a good start.

You can tell a story about oppression and intolerance using cyborgs or elves or whatever. It's intellectually lazy, but plenty of fiction gets away with it, just look at The Witcher. You'll notice The Witcher 3 didn't have any promo art of elves protesting and holding banners saying "Elven Lives Matter!"

I find the micro-transactions more annoying to be honest.

Wait, huh? Micro transactions in a singleplayer game? Won't PC players just be able to use cheats/mods to get them?

Reviews say they're for the arcady "Breach" mode, not the SP campaign, and also that the Breach mode is stupid and you shouldn't bother with it anyway.

QuoteQuote in response, the community suggested players make a save as soon as the game allows, then claim the pre-order DLC, then start every subsequent playthrough from that save and not from a new game in the menu. It's a ridiculous situation and an even more ridiculous workaround forced upon players.
Sigh... that's so sad. -_-
I saw that actually, but decided to completely ignore it. You actually get a lot of free stuff if you pre ordered the game, stuff that I definitely don't want because I know it'll fuck up with the balancing of the game. They give you weapons, a lot of money, and praxis kits. I'll just continue ignoring it, and never use it.
-
I saw there was a preorder bonus mission, at least from Gamestop, no idea if it's good/worthwhile though. Fundamentally, locking actual gameplay behind preorders like that bugs the hell out of me, way more than weapon skins. Fallout: New Vegas had a bunch of OP weapons as preorder bonuses depending on where you ordered it, added into the game as DLC later, so now whenever I start a new game I'm instantly overweight and have to dump a bunch of garbage on the ground, lol.
-
Yeah... Let's spend 5 years polishing a game to perfection and then overpower the player with crazy bonuses right off the bat.

Bought the Deluxe pleb edition of F:NW with all dlc on some steam sale for $5, remember starting over encumbered with 10 extra quest markers.
How is the game performing? any stutter or mouselag or anything like that?
