Alright so I just completed The Message.

Good grief this was heartbreaking. One of the reasons why I LOVE the Aliens Director's Cut is because of the mother/daughter bond Ripley has with Newt after she discovers Amanda died of old age, without ever knowing what happened to Ellen. The fact that the game makes Amanda listen to this message and understand what happened to her mother puts that whole scene under a new perspective entirely... Ellen doesn't know her daughter knew what happened to the Nostromo and the Narcissus. That was powerful.

Also, the hive? Scariest part of the game by far, even with the flamethrower. The motion tracker goes nuts, the place is dark as shit and there's several xenos on the loose+facehuggers. Had to stop there a while.

I've had more fun watching people shit themselves playing this - than I do playing most games. So for that alone, I give this game a well deserved

No seriously though get Mark or someone from the art team (or a collection of people who worked on it) to be interviewed in here. I would love to read some kind of art post-mortem (and I'm sure others would).

I'm only 2 or 3 hours in, so I haven't reached this supposed point where everyone realises the game is too long, but I doubt it will take away from my view of the overall experience in the end. To say it's the best Alien game ever made isn't much of a compliment in fairness, but it is. I liked the films but am not a huge fan, though can see the dedication to the creation of the world and the atmosphere throughout this game, I can imagine it's like porn for fans. For years people have been saying that the way to create a decent Alien game is not to focus on the shooting aspect but to focus on the hunting and survival, as that's what makes it scary. I'm glad CA got the chance to implement this vision and am also surprised (in a good way) that it was a concept a publisher was willing to back as a mainstream, non-indie title.

It could do with a little more polish - the transitions from scripted movement to player-controlled can be a bit jarring, I didn't find the re-wire tutorial very useful (what are you actually supposed to do with the first one where you can activate the speaker system or an 'unstable system'?), whenever I get spotted by humans I just run away and they seem to forget I was ever there, and when you see the alien walking around on its hind legs it still looks a bit naff and less scary (though that's a fundamental problem with the creature design and its obviously better animated than in Colonial Marines). Overall though really enjoying it so far, the atmosphere has been nailed and it's definitely the most tense game I've played for a long time. Games don't normally scare me or provoke much reaction from me but the first time the Alien suddenly dropped down in front of me and ate my face I had such a violent reaction that the battery pad flipped out of my 360 controller.

That's cool but what I really hate these days is cards being better for certain games than others. Just make them all run the same ffs.

Aye, competition is ultimately good for the consumer but card exclusive stuff is just a cheap attempt at attracting costumers.

Same could be said for consoles.

Haha I remember one of the guys at work had to go back through a load of old models and manually assign that tesselated material onto a few meshes just to please the AMD guys and fulfil our end of the contract.... But... Is there really any difference here at all? :S
