When I hear something like "three DLC packs" it just seems so overwhelming

I'm just hoping the SP will be good! To hell with multiplayer DLC.

I really don't want to be this guy ALL THE TIME WITH ALL NEW GAMES - but I can't stand this.

If I remove everything I don't care for anyway, like changing skin, player color, etc etc, then I'm left with a RL that deals 55 direct hit damage and the best tactic seems to be to just run as close to someone as possible and shoot into the ground, cause the confusion kills him more than me. Then I get killed by a demon that, if I'm lucky dies from falling down into lava before the next time I run into it.

    I guess this game isn't for me =D =D

So played a bit of the beta.

    It's not great tbh.

A mix of halo and quake, which is failing to be better than either.

No dedi servers has lead to 150+ pings every single game I have played.

Loadouts is just a terrible choice, it completely messes with the flow and the whole adaptability of each weapon to different circumstances.

There's still hope that the SP will be good tho, seems like they're holding the SP card pretty close to their chest. That's either very good or very bad.

If they are both poorly received, will iD remain much longer as a studio?

    Just tried the Open Beta.

Performance has gotten worse. Pings are awful, 100+. Nothing has changed in regards to the gameplay, it's still Call of Doom. Still runs in 1280 x 800 even though I have it set to 1680 x 1050. Still mouse accell. Still can't hear anyone. Still no audible feedback. Demon runes and Hack Modules still exist, but I know that will never change unfortunately.

Nice to have the FOV slider and taunts at the end of round podium, but yeah. Not still not looking too great.

What's the point in doing these alpha an beta's if little is changed? I've been it from the first closed alpha and the differences are minimal. Even though from get go almost everybody is complaining about the same things. Just read some hands on articles after the last beta. Too slow, loadouts gotta go, no dedicated servers, rocket launcher damage is laughable, etc.

Cause it's not about changing the core gameplay, it's all about tech and small balance things. People are complaining but I think iD knew that people would complain about this and they are riding it out until the game settles more. And do we know that there's not maps with proper weapon pickups, larger levels? I doubt that though, unless there will be an extended beta. In the end, loadouts are much easier to balance, cause if a weapon is better (not the RL), you can change it a bit and it will even out on all levels, if they are built around the same principle and in this game you have those special weapons for special occasions. Imagine playing Quake 2 with the blaster only, everyone has it from the start, then you add one railgun in the level and suddenly one player can actually shoot across the level hitscan or through that very small gap or so, the designer don't have to worry about that, the weapon will run out of ammo, people will avoid going your direction and it might take ages to respawn.

The Fov slider probably wasn't added now, most likely it was just hidden, they are not stupid, they know people were gonna talk about just that, the non existent fov option. Everyone knows programmers and directors hate fov sliders... they have their reasons I'm sure.

I wish iD would go more in the direction of old UT and made a assault mode, that would have been awesome and also made that demon spawner thing more fun, like "There's a god damn demon attacking the base from the left, backed up by a lot of players with pink pants and whatnot(?)"

Beta impressions: this is the first game in a while to make me reboot a pc. nice.

how does this game have such high requirements despite looking only so-so? Is it because of OpenGL driver support? AMD's revenge after RAGE? Why make a game that doesn't scale at all? Why make your market *smaller*?

It looks middle of the line these days (I should say I mean tech art), it's a AAA game in 2016. It looks about the same as any other game. It certainly shouldn't have so much trouble running on a gpu with less than 2gb memory. Hell, GTA V needs half of that.

Quote TL;DR DOOM feels like "Bruce Lee with a shotgun on a skateboard" says Id. DOOM feels like "Master Chief with a squirtgun on a shopping cart" says me. aka generic, unimpressive, uninspired.

But this one is actually good constructive criticism and addresses many of my complaints as well.

    Quote

Quote I've played in closed and open beta. I did not pre-order the game and don't pre-order games on principle. I had zero expectations going into the beta. I'm not a Doom fanboy; I've played the single player modes of the original Doom (enjoyed) and Doom 3 (did not enjoy) in their entirety. I share some concerns with the more sensible negative reviews here. My recommendation is "Positive" but my real review is "Mixed."

    • Here's some points I want to address:
    • Mouse acceleration: A lack of option to disable it is not acceptable in a PC FPS. This should be first on the list of things to fix.
    • Matchmaking: If server browser isn't an option in the final game, then that's a negative.
    • Loadouts/progression: I'm mixed on this because XP walls weapons and equipment, which is a negative. On the other hand, I really like the idea of picking and having the weapons and equipment that suit my playstyle every time.
    • Speed: Yeah, the game could benefit from a speed bump but it's not unbearably slow as it stands. I watched and compared some gameplay of Doom, Doom II, Doom 3 and Doom (2016) and, aside from the lamented absence of bunny hopping and side strafing, the speed isn't as vastly different as these reviews make it out to be. If you think this game is slow, go play or watch Doom 3 multiplayer. Seriously.
    • Mods: SnapMap is going to have to be amazing to make up for a lack of mod support. I have my doubts.
    • Weapons: Most of the weapons feel pretty weak. Super shotty is the only really useful and satisfying weapon in the game.
    • Demons: It's a fun concept but it means that a lot of the time a team that's snowballing can just further their lead by getting this. A losing team can use a demon to close the gap but this is pretty rare.

I think a fair number of my complaints can be fixed with alternate game modes and patches and I'm hoping they do. The common thread I see in a lot of the negative reviews is "This isn't Doom" or "I expected this to be Quake/UT and it isn't." I feel that a number of people with the first complaint would also complain that it's just a copy of original Doom if the game was how those people want it to be. Change it too much and it's "not Doom." I'm not sure if that's unfair for me to say since I'm neither with you or against you on this. For the second complaint, I can't find an instance where it was promised. Marty Statton has said two things that could be construed to mean, but never explicitly stated, it here and here . If it was said, either I didn't dig as deep as I thought or the alleged promise is hard to find. I've only ever heard other people say it reminded them of Quake/UT.

Another common complaint I keep seeing is the game didn't "live up to the hype." Hype is a really bad criteria by which to judge a game. How many times do people need to get hyped for game and get disappointed by the resulting product before they start to realize that maybe they are the reason why the game isn't "good?" It's about as likely as the game is actually crap. Just a thought.

When the closed beta was over, I asked myself three questions and my answers are still the same after the open beta. Did it meet my expectations? I had none before I played. Did I have fun playing it? Yes. Will I buy it? Undecided.

Maybe you'll have the same experience, maybe you won't. Give it a try and decide for yourself.

EDIT - Final thoughts post-beta weekend Now that the original dogpiling on this game has subsided and the weekend has come to a close, you can see a larger number of people sharing their satisfaction with the Doom beta. The nature of the game makes it divisive and it really comes down to what you expected out of the game going into it. Some of my comments may have come off as accusatory as a result. The people who more sensibly expressed their dissatisfaction I can understand, and in some cases, agree with. At the end of the day, what I care about from a game is an enjoyable experience and I had fun with the Doom beta. I hope the issues that I and others had get addressed post-launch.
