Cliff Bleszinski, of Unreal and Gears of War fame, recently appeared on a podcast to talk about, well, the Oculus Rift, mostly. But he also dropped a few facts about his upcoming project which, as it turns out, will be a bit of a blast from the past.

Cliff, along with his wife, Lauren, were both guests on Kevin Pereira's latest "Pointless" podcast, where the game designer was asked about his current plans. He said:

I have a pitch, I have concept art, I know pretty much what I wanna do. (...) It will be a PC experience that will harken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on, if you know what I'm saying.

On the topic of genre, Bleszinski said he wanted to do a "proper" arena shooter:

A first-person shooter. It's in my DNA. It's one of those things - a lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don't think they'd know what a proper arena shooter is if it'd hit them across the fucking head.

Later, he spoke about funding and the Oculus Rift in connection with his new game:

I want to get funding, I don't want to do a Kickstarter. (...) With the speed and style of the title, it would not be a good fit for the Rift. I can confirm that.

Finally, Bleszinksi mentioned where his project is right now and how he plans to move forward:

I've shown [the project] to various parties, and there are nibbles (...) I wanna do something. It's just I'm not gonna do it if the time is not right and if the funding's not right.

So there you have it: a "proper" old-school arena shooter for the PC, a game which will see Bleszinksi return to his roots. If you want to listen for yourself, look for the bits at 21:10, 21:53, 28:59, and 76:15, respectively—but if you do, take care: there's copious amounts of NSFW language. Oh, and check below for the four pieces of concept art Bleszinski's recently revealed.

So, lots of stuff surfacing lately. It's pretty much confirmed that he has founded Boss Key Productions. Earlier last month he announced that he is "coming out of retirement to make video games again" and now, according to a report, Guerrilla Games co-founder Arjan Brussee will be the C.O.O. of his new studio (the two of them worked together on Jazz the Jackrabbit). Full reveal expected tomorrow.

I'm honestly excited. I love that Cliffy is obsessed with "the community", that's the signal to me that he cares about what the people want. Someone who knows what the people want is very powerful in games, as long as they can deliver the quality to match the public need

The first project from Cliff Bleszinski's new studio will be a free-to-play PC shooter codenamed BlueStreak. Bosskey Games plans to partner with Korean online games publisher Nexon to create the title, Bleszinski announced on his Twitter account. He added that the studio will not release a "fake CG trailer showing 'Gameplay' because that's not how Bosskey does it."

More info from the Reddit AMA.

Cliff Bleszinski has revealed a host of fresh details about his newly founded studio Boss Key Productions and its debut project, codenamed BlueStreak.

The former Gears of War designer announced earlier this week that he was working on a free-to-play sci-fi PC arena shooter, and last night he took to Reddit to answer a series of community questions about the game and the people making it. While Bleszinski said he wasn't yet sure how the game would be monetised, he said he's determined not to make a 'pay-to-win' title and explained his decision to partner with South Korean developer and publisher Nexon. "I've never shipped a free to play game before," he said. "That's one of the many reasons why we're going with Nexon, they can provide server structures and a global peek into gamers of all types and guide us into a game that's more 'Shut up and take my money' as opposed to 'shaking you down for your hard earned cash". "So we'll experiment, tweak, tune, and most importantly, build a positive community around the game as we develop it". "When Nexon came calling I laughed," he added. "'The fucking Maple Story guys?!' And then I met Min Kim, president of Nexon US. And then Owen Mahoney, who runs all of Nexon. And I saw the direction they were going - Brian Reynold's new game, Robotaki's one, Splash Damage etc... and I spoke with all of these western devs who are working with them". "They all had glowing things to say about working with Nexon. They said they just let you build the game you want to build and when the time comes to see if you can monetize they'll help. When your developer friends vouch for a publishing partner like that, you trust them." The game designer said his new title is still "a fair ways off" given that Boss Key has only just acquired office space and furniture, but the studio is in the process of growing its staff count. "Right now we're around a dozen. Some folks have left Epic to join us, others from Call of Duty, some from Ubi, and we're actively flirting with more. Goal is 15-20 folks for the first year - find the fun first". "Then ramp to 60-70, ideally tops - tons of outsourcing. I don't want to work at a studio where I don't know everyone's name, and preferably their spouse's, again". "It'll be a slow burn for the first year but we promise to show you as much as humanly possible in the process." Asked which engine the game will run on, Bleszinski said: "My former employers and old co workers seem pretty excited about our considering Unreal Engine 4. It's wide open right now what tech we'd use." And on whether the game will be released on platforms other than PC: "PC first, and then we'll see. PC is where the comments generally are, the community gathers, and it's got that big global audience. In order to hit that global audience your game needs to look fantastic on the high end rigs but also run on a potato." Bleszinski also said "there will be an emphasis on story, but not in the traditional sense", explaining: "Weapons will have manufacturing corporations, players will have lore/history, and the world will feel there and lived in"."We also want to make live action shorts quarterly to help tell more about the universe outside of the game. If you're doing a Sci Fi IP you need as much of the fiction to come through in other mediums (and with lore) so people care about Plasma Rifle 3 or Player X."

Not sure how just PR this has become.

Anyway I don't like the studio name, the game name and F2P makes it already irrelevant.

Plus "plans to partner to develop" he said? Thought they had more that some concept art going on there.

blackdog: the toughest critic in the biz. He won't start reviewing your game in the tutorial, he'll start right by your studio's name.

lol Friechamp. I'm only half-serious, but I deserved that. Seriously though, name some F2P that has left some tangible mark in the shooting realm. I just don't see anything to get excited yet.

Except TF2, which was made free after release.

I for one, only play pretencious ecologic art games, made by indie vegan crossfitting developers from tumblr

Anyway, kidding aside, it's easy to hate on the guy, but he knows the industry and the market, and he knows what sells and what doesn't and he's actually a great game designer.

And say what you want, but he deserves a lot of merit for Gears of War.

I realize I am coming in 800 years late but i agree with this. I feel he deserves what he has earned and has contributed greatly to gaming in many ways. I wish I could have been a fraction of as influential as he has been.

You gotta be fucking kidding me? Yeah, that guy could certainly use some media training and learn to stop making promises he can't keep, but overrated? Hell no! Populous, Theme Park, Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper, Black and White and Fable would not have been there without him. That and the invention of the God game genre should demand respect from all gamers!
