Excellent article and it confirms what many of us had already decided long ago. Half-Life is dead.

It's really unfortunate that the attemps at continuing the franchise were never good enough, but I get what he's saying that too much time has passed. The brand means little to the new generation of gamers.
Kinda feels like finding out Santa isn't real all over again ![]()
More seriously, I agree with the author's conclusion. I'd rather not have HL2:E3/HL3 than it being not the experience it's supposed to be (whatever that is).

worth a read if you have the time and haven't already- Rasing the bar. This book is out of publication and sells for >£100 so I feel it's fine to share. if not someone can delete this post ![]()
Raising the Bar is a great read and a lovely art book. So happy I got a copy when it first released.
I have hope HL3 will come one day. I'm not excited or anything for it because I know that Valve never releases anything in a timely manner. But yes, would rather it never came out then have a sub-par experience.
The only way Half-Life 3 would ever meet expectations and actually get out of development hell is for valve to hire a bunch of top tier community modders/mappers to develop it.
Quote from Squad17 minutes ago, Squad said: No, it's not. Did you even read the article?
Yes, they kept trying out various ideas that lead to dead ends. Thing is, even if they somehow managed to reach the best possible conclusion, there would still be unsatisfied people. I've seen this happen to several other franchises. Developers or ip holders will simply ignore the said franchise out of fear of it not living up to expectations. Maybe they don't know what the fans expect from Half-Life 3 anymore. That's why hiring some diehard fans from the modding community would make the best choice - they know what they would like to see and they would find an actual way past that metaphorical wall. I'd say this is where the "freedom" of project movement at Valve played against them. If you don't have a deadline and can just put a project on hold like that, then it's never going to be done.
I will read the article later, but if mentioned live action and other experiments, than is the written version of what they were saying on the GameInformer Show the other day on YouTube.
It's weird if the article conclusion is no sequel, because in the video they were all agreeing that something half-life would come out this year, at least more to-tier mod that could be vouched by Valve. And they were saying what @Radu commented above, that maybe valve could validate some community product.
Anyway HL3 is not dead because at some point I'll work in their offices and do it myself ?
PS: for what you were saying about impossibility of satisfying expectations… I get what you mean but as a long time fan I can hardly imagine I'd be satisfied by some weird experimental project like the live action (or heavily narrative) "game" TellTale style, which is what sounds like one of the projects was. Hell, I wasn't satisfied with HL2. Always said that there pacing was off and they hit their stride only with the episodes.
@blackdog see you at the snack bar ![]()
Doesn't really surprise me that HL3 is "dead". For some time I'm even afraid that they don't make any new games anymore. This article shows me that this fear is justified.
Hope that they make at least a new CSGO Operation this year... ![]()
Is the JJ Abrams movie still happening?

Valve don't make games anymore, this shouldn't surprise anyone. They merely maintain their current popular games.
I was hoping for something big this year. I've heard that L4D3 was being worked on so was assuming that meant that they were building on Source2 for FPS titles. I'm not into VR, would be upset if they go down this route exclusively.
There was a leak quite a while back with of their JIRA database if I'm not mistaken. Had references to L4D3 and I think there was some HL3 entries in there too. But of course, with the way Valve works they could have been small teams trying things out and they've been canned like in the article.
I'd love for Valve to release an actual game. L4D3 would be very appreciated.
You'd have thought if Valve were going to release and push Source 2 they'd need a big game to release alongside it to show off their new tech like they did with Source and HL2. We need someone on Mapcore to get a job at Valve and leak us info ![]()
I'd hope to god Valve is still working on new non-vr software, but apathy replaces any anticipation when it comes to Valve's work so I can't get excited or bothered about any of it.
