Am I the only one who is seriously worried about the effect of this announcement on the longevity of Battlefield 3 MP? I just bought two expansions!

All bf3 expansions will be out in 6 months afaik, you won't be able to play bf4 in over a year and six months, (not including the beta, and by assuming bf4 will be out for christmas 2013 :derp:) so no.

I didn't realise that the game isn't dependent on EA services to run online. I was worried they would kill it like they do with a lot of console titles.

I think its fair to say we all know BF3 is a well liked game. The question is: Should they make a sequel so soon, why not make something different? I understand the tech is built for Battlefield already, and this makes it easier and less costly to produce another Battlefield game. But they were rather successful as you say, and they already have expanded content in the premium memberships which will make them even more money. Why not take the opportunity to make a different game? I'm not a fan of the yearly sequel model, I prefer to have a fair amount of time between sequels if they are not dealing with a progressive story, such as Mass Effect.

What are your thoughts on this? I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks about this.

since medal of honor didn't work as EA's CoD, BF has to take on that role...

it's an interesting issue, and i can see many different arguments for and againsty it, i'd be interested in hearing opinions simply because no argument for or against has ever swayed me in any particular direction. i'm not even sure it's a problem that needs solving. you buy a game once a year and people play it. not every game has to be counter strike or quake or that other game that changed your life but not really only kinda cause you were feeling a little different that day anyway.

but whatever, there's a thousand different models for getting games into the hands of people. every one has pros and cons. from indie artshit to corporate moneygrabbing it's all valid until customers stop handing over their money whilst grumbling online about whatever it is the kids are talking about these days.

That's interesting, and evidently true since you have to pre-order the new Medal of Honor to get beta access for the next Battlefield. But perhaps they haven't given up on Medal of Honor yet, maybe they want to try and get people into it using Battlefield? I imagine they mostly want to gain some extra sales, but have the pipe dream of Medal of Honor gaining a solid fan base for the future.

I suppose at the end of the day Battlefield is an incredibly popular series that is unique enough to move a fan base from game 3 to 4 to 5 just like CoD can. Can't blame them for going for it. But I also can't help but wonder what other awesome games these people could create.

EA's strategy is smarter than Activision's imo. They're leap-frogging between two modern war franchises rather than the same one like Activision. One year MOH, one year BF3, one year MOH 2 (where we are now!), next year BF4. So they're using both games to take on CoD, not just one or the other really.

What's that supposed to mean? Either 13mil people were cheated into buying BF3 or it's a good game. I'd like to think it's the latter.

I think its fair to say we all know BF3 is a well liked game. The question is: Should they make a sequel so soon, why not make something different?

The next bit does not reflect DICE's standpoint on this and is merely my point of view and even speculation:

Because that's a good way to get bankrupt. New IP´s are rarely a financial success in the first iteration and a huge risk as a result.

People need to stop thinking this is charity, there's 200+ people that are dependent on the success of a game. We can't just make the gamers happy by making something original that doesn't sell, games are expensive to make.

The BF3 team is huge as well, you can't just drop that whole team on a new project... that's a huge cost and a heavy burden on the new game (yup, it'll need to sell to make up for that).

You could lay off half the team to try something new...

Then again, there's always a point where greed kicks in. Was the new game not selling... or not selling "enough". I don't have any financial results though.

Some games have huge sales but little profit cos of a ridiculous cost, it's hard to say. And then you have the investors, they like you to play it safe. If you announce a new IP instead of BF4 for instance they they're gonna get nervous.

Stock drops, and that's not good for your publisher who in turn gives you the money to make the next game.

It sucks but there's no way around it, no money = no games. People working in the industry love making and playing games but that doesn't mean you can get around it. It's still a business, sadly.

In the end, studios make games that sell so they can make the next one.

Unless you gain the money from something else, for instance Steam, then you don't need to worry about anything cos you have a cashcow and you can just focus on what matters, making good games.

Thank god we're making games rather than flip-flops though.

In other news, I'm pissed off at marketing for always causing confusion

It was meant as a joke against stats. I've got nothing against BF3, I think it's a great game, particularly the multiplayer. It's got more depth than most of the other military shooters out there, and it's way more accessible than ARMA. I personally don't see how CoD:MW always outsells it.

But it would be pretty rare for a financially unsuccessful new IP to get the green light on a sequel... right?

Battlefield 3 is a really great game, and it should be no surprise it sold so much.

Hopefully Battlefield 4 wont just be a copy but will bring something entirely new to the franchise.

Well, I can't blame anyone for wanting to have a reasonably stable job, and we all appreciate your making Battlefield games instead of flip-flops I'm sure. Its unfortunate that people aren't able/ willing to buy more new IPs, but I understand that reasonably well; I don't have a lot of money to spend on games - yet. Perhaps that is partially why I don't like yearly models, by the time the new one comes out I can probably only grab one full priced title for the next while and why would I want the exact same thing I already have?

Prototype got a sequel and now Radical Entertainment is no more (or at least the Prototype franchise, they have some supporting staff left working on other Activision games from what I've heard).

So it does happen But there's some success stories as well off course.

Yup I can relate to that actually. It's not really a shocker that so many new IP´s don't kick off, it is a leap in the dark after all...

I don't really understand the appeal of yearly iterations either, like CoD, fifa, etc... But hey, seems like enough people like it Well, at least BF won't join em.
