Out of interest, what has Gabe actually done for the games industry this year?

Well, as Gabe states it himself: He's just the face of the company. People project everything they see in Valve on to him. And Valve did a lot of good things for the games industry last year - launching Portal 2, proving that a Studio that has been in FPS for years can develop a RTS/MOBA successfully, supporting Indie-Devs to no end, converting their biggest current MP game into a free2play-model without ruining it entirely, expanded Steam's reach again by a few million players, providing a working Digital Platform for the biggest game launchs of the year (Skyrim and CoD MW3) and became contractor for the white house in developing a curriculum around the education with video games.. The list goes on, but Valve/Gabe singlehandedly proves how a games-studio can be self-controlled and successful in an ever changing industry over a long time. /fanboy

like e-freak said. that is why gabe is a legend. i don't think valve have ever done anything i don't approve of. they have surpassed the status of "game developer" at this point for me, and entered into a whole other area of awe.

Actually I didn't, but a lot of us did, indeed.

Nevertheless the name of the thread is "Person of the Year", we need to keep that in mind.

But everyone's achievements are usually founded/based on someone else's work. Carmack probably owes everything to "x".... that owes everything to "y"... that owes everything to "z"... that owes everything to the big bang.

And naming the big bang person of the year would just be ridiculous Skjalg.

In other news, I agree with e-freak and the other valve fanboys. Long live the Gaben.

Yes, I was arguing the same point (although sarcastically), as an answer to everyone voting because "that guy" (carmack or gaben) had influenced them so much instead of voting on the actual subject at hand.

I see. It appears that I did not properly read through the posts prior to yours.

For this, I apologize. Take this animated smiley as a token of my forgiveness.

Furthermore, to the anti-Gabe crowd; can't you just settle for the fact that he's an all-round baller?

Take this animated smiley as a token of my persuasion.

Carmack hasn't done anything relevant game-wise for over a decade now anyway, sorry but that's the truth

It's for this year man, and carmack shipped the first game using 100% mega-texture technology.

Also, id didn't get me started in this industry either, or carmack!

    Finland's Remedy did!
