why do you hate fun so much
-
Fun and joy are for the weak, real man endure pain and misery.
-
Wow that trailer is incredible, how long do you think it's going to take to beat the game fully? 2 years?!!
-
I'm not watching the trailer, i was sold on it before the game was even announced.

-
Well it did take me over a year to get all the pigeons in IV

-
There were pigeons?

They were called flying rats, apparently NY slang for pigeons...

I'm sorry I don't obey your draconian standards for what "fun" is, but go ahead if you want to base jump cliffsides while taking in-game screenshots on your in-game phone that you will hang in your in-game apartment. I'd rather be doing that in real life than have a poor man's simulator of it. #burn

I get it.
You are a jehovah's witness.
*knock knock.

Jesting aside, for me GTA isn't really about the random shit you can do. It's more about the fact that it's an enjoyable gangster story featuring a wide range of colourful characters, with many nods to things ranging from The Sopranos to Goodfellas. If anything, the gameplay has always been its weakest point — while the driving and shooting has always been serviceable, without the often hilarious dialogue and such while you're driving to missions it'd get really boring like, say, LA Noire. GTA5 actually looks like the first one where the gameplay mechanics will live up to everything else.
The real magic of GTA is the fact that it simply creates this incredibly rich and diverse world as a backdrop, while having a plot-led experience that uses it. As such the world feels very authentic and like you can just go anywhere you want, in the same way we used to dream about in the 90s. The fact that the world happens to have loads of sweet stuff you can waste time doing just adds to the sense of freedom the game has.
And that, ultimately, is the key: it's a great quest-based single-player game that takes place in an expansive world where you can approach things in countless ways; if you want to go off on some tangent and waste a few hours doing so, you can. That immense potential for experimentation and carving your own path is what makes GTA games the polar opposite of a roller coaster shooter like Call of Duty, and it's something that few developers can get right. I can't actually think of a single other open-world game apart from Red Dead Redemption (by Rockstar) that's hit the spot and clicked.

On a more serious note, I wonder why people here always have an incentive to start a witch hunt when people don't like a game title. Is it because of insecurity about your own opinions or why does it matter if someone else HAS to like it? I'd get less shit for talking about your moms, respectively.
GTA5 is still probably not going to be a bad game, I'm sure 99.9% of all people will enjoy it. I'm sure even if I played through just the campaign I'd probably enjoy some of it (if it is like where in the vid you could switch from the sniper to pin a guy down, that's pretty cool and XCOM-esque). I just don't think I'd be using any of the side elements like I assume people want to do. Or I don't know, what is the appeal here?
-
I'd agree with the freedom of choice if the singleplayer missions actually allowed for that... I mean I'd love to see from how many different angles you could jump into a mission to complete it differently. Sure the game already has some, but if you could choose to e.g. plant explosives on the top of a bank to create a hole to rappel through next to the vault while panic ensues, then that'd be extremely cool. But as far as I understand, I can't do that in GTA5? I can only choose what the game lets me, which from the video seemed like a few different premade options (again, not a bad thing, but not the whole "player freedom" thing that the game tries to sell), right?

humor is a big part of the gta universe as well. it's not some dumb sandbox experience where there is just a facade of emulating reality, the fun thing about gta is where it breaks from reality and makes you laugh or cringe (turn on the radio).
it's nto about emulating life, its about emulating it 99% and then utterly warping it on the last 1% in a brilliant, but not exactly subtle way

GTA for me is: Jumping off buildings, performing stunts with all kinds of vehicles, running around exploring. Wreaking havoc by driving through crowds, blowing up stuff and shooting everyone in my way. Also: Cheats, lots and lots of cheats to spawn cool vehicles. 95% of my time was spend doing sandbox stuff.
I had my brother complete all GTA's from 3 through 4 and I just messed around in an unlocked world. I was never a fan of the missions, they were a bit dull at times and the gameplay mechanics didn't feel very rigid. I did play a couple of missions here and there but I couldn't do it for a full game. This'll be the first GTA since I have moved, so no brother around to finish it for me, we'll see how that goes

Sounds more like Just Cause 2

Unfortunately, that's scripted. You can switch during free-roaming.

Seems very binary to me from the trailer :-/
They said sometime ago there would be routines btw, so that you can stalk an armored truck and decide when to take it down... seemed like what you could do during free-roaming as a "self assigned side quest".
-
I'd honestly be more interested in the "how?" than the "when?" to take down an armored truck. It'd be so cool if you could crash a car to create a blockade to ensure it isn't going anywhere, while at the same time jam/scramble all local network communication so cellphones alarms etc. wouldn't work, then get to work on the truck itself. police is delayed x amount of time because nobody can wire it in time. that would be hella cool. I guess it's more of what Watch Dogs will offer, which is also why I'm looking forward to that compared to GTA.
