Looks great. Not a massive fan of the Marines sounding like 'Trailer Voice Guy'..

    Aaaaaaaaaaahahaha those voices are terrible.

It looks so good and then you hear them speak. It's like going on a date with the hottest girl in the world but she laughs like a fucking donkey.

Eh, it's not like they didn't want em to sound like that.

    ...right?

Imo they sound ok and cheesy in a good-ish way. Now release the fucker.

cmon people. the lines have been in the original as well (although with distortion on) and while its clearly not the strongest voice/sound design its still pretty uber for a fan mod!

Creating game (made by professional dev studio) remake is like rebuilding old construction. You can't just say "Let's make it different because we're not pro". It's uber for fan mod but players want HL1 and its mood.

it's an amateur project of utterly enormous scale. give them a fucking break.

the simple fact that they went to great lengths to rerecord this stuff deserves an award. even more so with actors that don't sound like they are 13 and on their laptop's microphone. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and guess that most dialog will sound good enough and they know what they are doing. keep in mind, this trailer isn't even an official release but a "leak" of some sorts.

The voices are fine, besides I think the voice acting is the least of their worries right now.

Haha, ah man that takes me back. Even more reminiscent of the Combine's distorted voices than I remembered.

Well it certainly sounded out of place. But still, nothing that would keep me from playing it. Didn't know the trailer guy was in there too

Looks great! A bit dark and all, but impressive stuff anyways. I think the VO would be good enough with some mixing/distortion, the acting itself is not worse than your average shooter anyways.

Yeah that might just be it, actually. Those old grunt sounds are pretty much iconic because of the almost scarily loud distortion, the lack of humanity to the voices is important to capturing the mood of a well-organised and brutal attack force IMO. If they got some of that back in there it'd improve things no end. I really hope this feedback makes its way to the sound guys because I've already seen huge volumes of complaints about it around the web so it's not just a few picky bastards. The voice acting is actually good and sounds like professional work to me, it's just not used quite right.

One of the BMS guys made a post about the footage here:

    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... stcount=83

I do feel bad for them, after all they've been working on this for a long time and this footage isn't necessarily the #1 thing you would show off to shock-and-awe people prior to the game's release. It looks good don't get me wrong, but HL1 obviously has some sexier moments that would be more ideal for hype purposes.

but it is. there's so much good stuff they are showing off, but people cling to something they can hate. it's a sense of entitlement that is a large factor in why most mods feel the need to never release because people judge the shit out of minor details, expecting a AAA quality game.

i'm offended that people aren't praising them for what they managed to achieve so far, but instead focus on something that you will notice maybe 0.5% of the entire game. Perhaps they have very good reasons for doing it like that, they want you to hear the dialogue, they have more than 1kb to spend on voices so quality can improve etc, the original HL1 voice acting for the grunts is pretty rough around the edges if you listen to it now, maybe it's an old WIP placeholder, maybe it's their artistic decision, maybe they can't find someone to fix the hours of sounds they have in the game without delaying the release another year.

I don't understand how people become such armchair producers whenever a mod is involved yet lap up shit that "professional" developers push out so willingly.

All I am saying is, benefit of the doubt, perhaps some encouragement alongside the valid criticism would be nice, it's not like there is nothing to compliment in the footage shown, far from it, but I wouldn't like to be the guys on the team right now, seeing some dickhead leak footage and then having the loud-mouthed minority rip it to shreds because it's not an exact duplicate of a game they last played 10 years ago.

Do you understand where I am coming from?

edit/ reading the steam thread he states it was intentional. so there you have it. i can guarantee you that within the context of the entire game those voices will sound fine, it's not going to ruin your experience, and it's going to be awesome. i give you my personal guarantee as somebody from the internet who happens to hold an opinion, therefore i am equally as valid as everybody else commenting.

I agree Rick, I feel really bad for the team because an unnecessary amount of emphasis has been put on the issue. Due to it being the only sliver of gameplay that's been released after years of waiting people are going very OCD about it and almost reacting violently on YouTube and other forums. And as we all know the people who're happy often say nothing at all, so it really sucks for the BMS guys that they're just going to see this torrent of bitching.

Most of it looks absolutely sublime, which is why this voice thing has been exaggerated somewhat — there's actually nothing else to criticise. The voice is a relatively minor complaint, and in my particular case I've just tried to explain why I think a fairly small change (re-implementing the radio distortion) would make a huge difference. In a way I'm trying to turn the retarded 'LOL THE VOICES FUCKIN SUCKKKKK' bullshit into some kind of meaningful constructive feedback. By no means will it ruin my experience if they don't change it, it's just something I'd like to see.

I'm still looking forward to it. I'm sure the game will be great. Visually at least it looks pretty damn good. The video was a bit dark, but that might just be the video. All of the other stuff they've released looks great.

As for the voice acting, I doubt there will be that many instances of stuff like this. It's not the best voice acting but it's just something extra for the player to listen to before they shoot them in the back of the head.

Also, Erratic, best avatar ever Long live Shenmue!

I thought that looked like great fun. Old school, but awesome nonetheless. It will be great to just see HL1 with a fresh coat of paint on it. I can imagine the rocket blast off looking pretty damn awesome!

When I worked on BM, there was a lot of work going into adding more choreographed sequences, which were looking awesome when I saw them. It's great to see new section and characters from the Black Mesa facility, I think you guys will really appreciate the changes when you play it.

    Very exciting!

I also second what Rick said, which was a great post.
