Can you join the Legion (haven't met them yet)? I think I'll try to do that if it's possible, might be more fun than hanging out with the NCR (those guys are so boring).

Lmao, true. The Legion were awesome, it's fun to kill them tho, cos they're really hard.

I had a fetch quest that wanted me to go to the legion stronghold, and I thought "well I'm vilified, but maybe some guard will stop me and I'll know I cant do this quest..."

Nope, shot at as soon I entered the gate, so I shot back and continued to wipe out everyone including Caesar at level 19. The game didn't end automatically at that point, but it did for me, with Caesar dead the rest of the story really didn't make sense.

Restarting the game playing as a middle-aged hispanic woman named Consuelo. Also turned Hardcore mode off as that added nothing to the experience. Let's see if it gets better this way!

I went to talk to the deputy in Primm and look what happened:

Same for some reason, I played up till the Strip and then completely lost interest, something wrong happened there :S

But I found NV to be more Fallout than F3 was allthough I did complete the latter.

I think the graphics don't help either... I mean this whole thing is so dated it hurts.

I have found a very "serious" problem with this game: Deviate a little from the main path and it breaks completely.

    Example:

    Quote

When I got to Primm for the first time and met the NCR guys on the outpost I got to know that they were having problems with the powder gangers in the city. The way I understood it was that the city was completely overrun with convicts so all I had to do was to go there and exterminate everyone. I went inside the bison hotel (the biggest building in town) and killed everyone on the first floor. I rescued the deputy and told him to help me kill the remaning powder gangers on the second floor but he was an idiot and got killed in the process. When I exited the Bison Hotel I noticed that other casino across the street. I went there and talked to the people and there they were acting as if nothing had happened. That really didn't make any fucking sense and broke the game completely.

On my current playthrough I actually went to the casino and talked to the people first so my quest could receive an status update and make a little more sense.

It was one of those games that you really had to grit your teeth with in certain parts.

that's harsh... i'm no specialist on this subject, but shouldn't Obsidian have ringed a bell about this before? seems a bit shady though to put into a contract that a bonus is being given based on some random value rather then a part of the gross revenue's.

And having such a strict condition without any form of scaling is a bit weird. How about 50% of the bonus if the game is over 80%?

That seems like the most logical way to do it, and the way most companies operate... profit sharing. Sounds like obsidian got screwed on that contract.

On the other hand, it distinguishes the publisher's job from the developer's job. In the profit-sharing scheme, if the developer makes a wonderful game that doesn't sell because the publisher didn't advertise it well, they essentially get punished for the publisher's fuck-up... and I'm sure this has happened many many times.

And if the developer makes a crappy game and the publisher advertises the hell out of it and still manages to sell a lot, despite being an awful game.. then the publisher deserves the bonus, not the dev.

If they both do equally well or equally shitty, then profit sharing is fair. If one does significantly better, then they get slighted, in a way. They still get more of a bonus, but the bonus isn't as fairly divided.

Ideally it'd be a combination of those things... something like a relatively low fixed percentage profit sharing, and add in a scalar metacritic bonus, so they get an extra percent of the profit for every point their metacritic score is above 80.

The really sucky thing for Obsidian is that they lost a lot of points for bugs.. If you take off the two lowest scores, the two 65's from GameZone and Armchair Empire, they have an 85 average. Both of those review's main complaints is it was released too early and therefore was buggy, in order to be out in time for the holidays... which is a result of publisher pressure. I'm not removing fault from Obsidian, they should be able to meet deadlines.. But it is crappy that the publisher rushed them in order to make more money by having it on the shelves for the holiday, and then the dev doesn't even get a slice because the initial amount of bugs was too much for some reviewers to handle.. due to the rush... and I'm sure they had to crunch really hard to meet that deadline at all.

Brian Fargo claims in this interview that your story isn't correct. To sum it up, he says the publisher does QA and not the developer so it wasn't Obsidian's fault.

Well that partly explains why their games are bug fests

Internal QA, even if a really small team helps no end.

Bethesda/Zenimax's QA department is really mismanaged. I'm surprised anything they release is playable. I guess it's all about managing expectations.
