More Crysis / F.E.A.R sequels

So I've got the newest PCGamer UK edition and there's a couple news snippets you'll be interested to here about:

More Crysis to come

Anyone who's played Crysis's cliffhanger ending would be hoping for comfirmation of the next game, and Crytek boss Cevat Yerli recently stated: "The game is designed as a trilogy, so you have two more installments to come and the ending (Of Crysis) is planned deliberately." It fits: Crytek have also trademarked Crysis Wars and World In Crysis.

F.E.A.R. to get two sequels

A new F.E.A.R. is in development, we know this to be true. We even know that it should follow directly on from the events of the first game and take into account the violence witnessed and inflicted in the Perseus Mandate and Extraction Point expansion packs.

We don't expect to be hearing much more than that for a while yet. Why? Because two companies can now produce games based on the characters and fiction of the first F.E.A.R. game: the original developers, Monolith; and their original publishers, Vivendi (under their Sierra brand). Project Origin will be Monolith's next serving of Alma flavoured horror. F.E.A.R. 2, comfirmed to us by company sources will be Vivendi's attempt.

Political and financial manoeuvering mean that Vivendi won't make any announcements until after Monolith have played their hand. Naturally, Vivendi aim to match and then beat Project Origin in every way. It's going to be quite the feast for F.E.A.R. fan: two massive companies betting huge budgets on a single series - and they'll both be on the shelves by the end of the year.

The reveal of F.E.A.R. 2 isn't far away. With the first screenshots and details of Project Origin out in the open, it will soon be time for Vivendi to pull back the curtains on their project.

w00p!

Hmm, pretty weird. I guess Project Origin is what most people will consider the spiritual sequel, while F.E.A.R. 2 is more of a cash-in like Far Cry 2.

Doesn't mean it won't be decent, but in all honesty I have no anticipation for either as I didn't like F.E.A.R. much and thought it was incredibly bland.

It's more down to their publishers when it comes to game funding. Even the biggest developers can't fund the millions necessary for a game in most cases.

I suspect the poor Crysis sales will push them towards marketing the engine. They seem to do engine technology better than anything else, and it'd be a good way to make some serious cash if they can own everything else out there even more than they have already. :-D

i would make a guess and say that crytek is under a contract to complete and release those next games in the series, and therefore unquestioned can go on doing their business. they are, after all, a high profile company so i am sure that their publisher has given them a green light to go working on the next titles; whether or not the engine sells is insignificant.

Lots of games have been intended to be trilogies and never ended up being so after poor sales. Just because Crysis is quite well known amongst enthusiasts doesn't mean there'll definitely be sequels as planned. You'd be surprised how little of the mainstream is actually consciously aware of Crysis -- give it a test and ask some people. Nobody in their right mind is going to sink millions more into a project that didn't do too well the first time around, and that doesn't have that much mind share with the general public.

Yeah, I was referring to the NPD data.

To put it into context, in the same data report Call of Duty 4 on the 360 got 1.57 billion units sold, and a further 440,000+ units on the PS3. It pretty much makes Crysis and UT3 look like a drop in the ocean.

I wouldn't feel too bad though as the consoles do generally have a bewilderingly larger audience. BioShock also failed to do particularly well on the PC from what I recall, but got a respectable sales count on the 360. The sad reality is that the PC has a massively smaller base, excluding those who gravitate towards the MMORPGs. People in general just find consoles to provide better value, and new gamers tend to start out with consoles anyway. The idea of playing games on a computer is definitely fading, even though it's still large enough to be considered 'vibrant'.

No report is truly accurate, but when we're talking about NPD numbers below 100,000 that's unfortunately a sure sign that things aren't going too well. :(

Yes 86k is quite disappointing, but keep in mind that this is US and November only (and the game was released in the middle of the month). I'd wait until march or so before jumping to any conclusions. It is safe to say a LOT OF sales are lost due to piracy though :(

Probably the same applies to UT3, the COD4 sales for 360 are absolutely :megamon:
